Game 15: Green Bay @ Miami - Christmas 12 PM CT

Miami could score in 1 play(like earlier) Enough time on clock then to get in FG position and win the game vs needing a TD to. -
What to do about 3rd Base ?
brewcrewdue80 replied to Jeff Meyer's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Only thing here is that in Vientos, the Brewers have a better RHB minor league version of him playing 1b/DH with 2b already in Keston Hiura. Thus the move doesn't help the team Canha is turning 34 and paid 13.5mil guaranteed or 23mil the next 2 seasons. LF is where Canha plays, so you want to add him to the OF mix where Yelich and Winker are already battling for DH to avoid playing? Wiemer has a future in RF and you want to take RF for a LF that costs top 5 money on the Brewers team in 23. Keeping down 1 of Mitchell or Frelick, and lose Wiemer in the process. You are playing checkers by in your mind filling a Batting Lineup need, I'm playing chess knowing we have Mitchell and Frelick who have to be locks for over .700OPS while providing better outfield depth and keeping a RF top 100 prospect that has every bit potential to be a batting lineup star. This is attempting to add 1? 2 games more won via batting(if at all) while moving a long term solution at RF and removing Hiura to replace with Vientos that maybe has a chance at 40 games started this season? Sit in the minors most likely all season. Canha is old, .775 career OPS batter projected at .746 this season.(2021 total) Well within reason that Mitchell and Frelick exceed that, and should Wiemer arrive exceeds that himself as all 3 are career .800 plus OPS in the minors. Frelick/Wiemer over .870 thus far and 46/43 AAA games played. I haven't even put Chourio out there since he's only seen a few games at the AA level. Just doesn't work as an improved roster logically. There's a reason drafts have been heavy CF/SS defensively. You're acquiring 2 guys that aren't defensively skilled at the positions they play much less versatile for one who's bat is on level while possessing the skill defensively to play multiple positions. Oh and add 13mil-23mil to payroll. -

I did just look at Vientos and that's a higher risk prospect than Wiemer. Reads mostly like 1b/DH with a hope of 3b poorly. Then add 30pct k rate and what's the upside? And Chana? I had to look around theres is none. So maybe Canha? 13.5Mil or 2/23mil LF. Don't understand taking an old OF for a prospect that has high upside. How does he fit the roster? Which player you ejecting from OF? Taylor? Mitchell-Frelick delay? Just seems like making a move just to make a move. 20mil saved by the Mets they must be paying the Brewers money? Since Mil can afford to take on 13.5mil or 2/23 shouldn't they ask for more back? Or reduce the prospect given to like Carlos Rodriguez? -
You could have gone, all these players healthy for game 162?! Wow that's optimistic. And where did Winker go? If the team is completely out of playoff picture in your opinion based on that lineup, you could mention being disappointed that Chourio and Quero weren't in game 162. I know I would be disappointed if we were far from the playoffs with that lineup, Yelich doesn't need to play gm 162. Contreras doesn't need to play over showing off Quero. It's quite unrealistic to base game 162 lineup as meaning the Brewers were far from reaching the playoffs. Far for me tells of more than 10games. That would be 76games won or less. The pitching is too good to have that kind of record. Ashby based on how aggressive the Brewers signed him to an extension, should see gains on how he performs. We won 86 games with starts missed by Woodruff and Peralta and the starts Ashby provided. Something drastic multiple times over must have happened to the staff to see a low win season like 76. Now all my optimism isn't saying we'll win 95+ games this season(10 more wins vs less as your pessimism is suggesting,) but realizing with 2Aces, 1 #2 and a future #2 is a staff that will win games consistently. So is it the bullpen then? You didn't refer to them. Just a game 162 lineup. Add a little more depth because the OP only changed Winker with Wiemer and maybe Taylor with Frelick. I think Frelick is over Taylor right now heading in to a full season playing as a Rookie. By my counts you're getting Yelich, Adames, Tellez, and Urias to produce to what they did last season. Contreras-Upgrade over Catchers production. Winker-Upgrade over McCutchen production last season Mitchell-Better production than CFs last season. Leaves Turang and Frelick as the bats to make up the losses of Wong and Renfroe. I'm not h8gh on Turang batting, but defensively at 2b he'll be better than Wong last season. Will lessen the impact lost we see .610OPS from him. It's 1 batter overall. Frelick, he's probably replacing McCutchen bat more now that I've written this response(Winker for Renfroe). Should be close when going with OPS and upside on higher. Brosseau is Brosseau Taylor is Taylor. Caratini is less needed but still Caratini. As constructed with bright future additions, returning to 86wins is realistic. StL fwiw got career best seasons from Goldy and Arenado at ages 34/31. Dozen years younger batting from Pujols who's gone this season. Contreras might replace what Pujols gave them, but where else? Their offense is sure to be decline from last year. There's more reasons to be optimistic for 2023 than pessimistic. 86wins was disappointing last year. 90wins is in the playoffs. The team's upside exceeds 90wins approaching 100wins. A return to 86 wins is realistic as constructed SPs& Positional batters. Bullpen is the black sheep in the teams makeup.

Why trade now from the OF group when you can see a grand preview for 3months who is the one to stick with and who's one you can use at the trade deadline? I think the Rosenthal idea is just an educated assumption because at the moment Milwaukee has OF depth numbering 7/8 deep. And at most youre carrying is 5 in season. Theyve got to move 1 eventually. I'm keeping them all until we're in season play and up until the offseason. You're trading some Pitcher next offseason, maybe(likely) 2, and including say 1 of Frelick/Mitchell gets your targeted prospect/ 1st-2nd season in ML player. Wiemer is likely climbing in to top 50s as 23 season prospects graduate. There's little reason to expect Frelick/Mitchell/ or Chourio"s values as of now to decrease a year from now. Don't rush a trade is all I'm advocating for. If we're trading 1 of the OFs for Vargas in LA or Baty in NYM, that's very reasonable, trading for a Pitcher though? Not needed this season.

This is something I was not aware of. Or flat do not remember happening. Teams will still be able to plan ahead matchups but the reduction on games played vs eachother must take away 5 games started vs 1 team in a season. The way to set up matchups is the skip a day 6man rotation(or bullpen start) week pushing back matchups 1 day. So this new schedule, were the games spread within League matchups? Or more interleague matchups?
-
That's a good thing. A thorn in our side is also a thorn in Stl side. We could use a team to take account for with Stl starting pitchers. Teams align their best pitchers vs whom they need wins against. We seen Adam Wainwright 5 times each the last 2 seasons 10 total. Cubs 6 total. Pitt 7 total and Cin 5 total. Miles Mikolas was 5 times last season. Each win vs a loss in division is a 2game swing. Getting a #4 or 5 SP vs their #1 or #2 SPs can improve your head to head. 2 extra wins is 4games in the standings. (Of course now Wainwright will have 6 starts vs Milw since I suggested he could see less)

Rookies top 3 in RoY inside 2 top 100 prospect lists and started season is what earns a draft pick. Top 2 RoY and didn't start the season get awarded a full year service time. You may not think Turang can finish top 3, but it's 3rd not 1st or 2nd. Say his defense is stellar, bats 270+ even covers SS for an Adames injury? It's going to be recognized. Had you heard of any the top 3 RoY in the NL prior to this season? Harris, Strider, and Donovan?
-
Thus the new incentive. If a team is worried about service time, they should be signing an extension with that player within 2 years. Peralta and Ashby as examples. But you are right. Miller/Toro could be a hold Turang down to gain that 7th season, which would make sense if he's not qualifying for the incentive return on draft pick. If anything until these lists are updated preseason and Turang is included or not, Toro/Miller provide depth til they are.

Winker, Yelich, Tellez all LH Bats. Turner was RH, He'd have fit games at DH, 1b even besides 3b. Turang the Rookie is a LH bat. You could easily have put a Urias 2b, Adames SS, Brosseau at 3b/1b and Turner could have been DH/3b or 1b vs LH Starters. Turner for his age, is still producing top 25% in MLB as a bat last season. He started off extremely slow which could have been due to the lockout/ ST. His last 3 months were over 800 OPS (1.030, .815, and 1.025) over 300BA each of those months. Over 370 OB each of those months. Over 800 OPS last season innings 7,8 and 9 entire season stat. K pct below 17% since 2016 season and 18% or below his entire career. Career 818 OPS vs LH Pitching He was the best veteran bat in the 30s Milwaukee could have afforded that addresses the weakness in the batting lineup. But he's gone to Boston. Anyone else the Brewers sign that includes 3b has much greater downside than Turner did. I see Mancini as a RH 1b/DH that Turner would have covered besides 3b/2b. We have Hiura so Hiura has to be moved if you go that way. And Drury, I posted in a different thread, stats that show he's a negative WAR/0 WAR player outside of Cincy and Arizona and he's just had for him, a career HR year. One that seen .320 OB for a .302 Career OB batter. That's a lot of not upside and all downside.

brewcrewdue80 replied to Jeff Meyer's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Profar wouldn't sign here without a clear indication he was an everyday starter. Or taking a 4-5year contract. He's 29, his next contract is a 1-2year prove it kind of deal for his next FA or something long enough for him to take in to retirement. So that said, if I'm him Milwaukee isn't a destination for me with their current roster make up. (trade away Urias or Turang I'd see that path to playing time) I do see Houston rumors on Profar, which kinda odd looking at their roster. 1b/DH is a need so maybe he pulls up there and provides depth/platoon at 2b/SS for them. Oh and looking at Profar's history he only has 89games played at 3b, so a SS/2b/util isn't a good matchup for the Brewers needs currently. -

Brandon Drury: 18 HRs in 279PAs at Cincy, Colorado, and Arizona. 1 in 15.5 PAs 10HRs in 289 PAs everywhere else last season. 1 in 28.9PAs For his career he has 79HRs. 0 at AmFam in 40PAs 38 of his HRs in career are from Az, Cincy, and Col. in 890 PAs 1 in 23.4 career. 41HRs everywhere else in 1,386 PAs. 1 in 33.8 in career.. Last season was a fluke season for him and he could just manage near 2.5WAR having it be so. We already have a Brandon Drury named Mike Brosseau. 25.8 PAs per HR for his career. Drury is redundant, just give Brosseau more playing time and he's matching or bettering the numbers Drury will put up next season if playing for Milw. Unless we pull off a trade for improvement, there is nothing else position players still FAs that will improve the team. -
There are cautionary tales on extending early and being burned. Jon Singleton being one. The players have to be willing. All 3 have probably had an approach talk. Any one of them could have said not at this time. Peralta is far and away a success extension. Ashby hasn't proven his is. Woodruff&Burnes 2019/2020 happening kinda made their price arc extreme. 2020 was the opportunity but we were mostly shut down. Add the lock down to be dealt with after. You lost games, you lost months of time to have conversations on extensions. The extensions you want to see from them may happen with Mitchell/Turang/Frelick/Chourio the rest of this offseason through next 2 offseasons.
-
I'd probably have Frelick 9 Mitchell 7 and Turang 8. You said it on vs LHP, Taylor and Brosseau, swap out 1 Lefty Of and Turang. If you can't see 4runs a game, you're not seeing the importance to Winker over McCutchen. Contreras over any Catcher. Mitchell/Frelick over Cain/Davis. We add that Turner fella you're taking the pressure off Turang's PA load as well as Hiura's 3TO style.

This. Turner will certainly see starts at DH. Urias has 2b duties and 3b when Turner does so. The true reason to sign Turner is putting that veteran bat in the lineup that is above average since or before majority of the team was signed or drafted. To the point on Steamer projectionthe poster above, that's major age related decline expectations. Less bat, less fielding, and less games played all tied in to what is projected that season. Sure that is likely true, but even at his age Turner's statcast batter profile is better than Urias and far better than Brosseau. I guess you need to compare where Steamer has Turang over Turner. That is who is losing some playing time(along with Brosseau) Does Steamer even project Turang for 350+PAs? I'd also add, Turner could be traded mid-season if it had become apparent there wasn't a need on the team due to a Turang RoY type breakout. Maybe Winker and Yelich are breaking out and Turner DH games are spoken for. Just the no doubt improves the lineup signing that you don't need to commit big dollars and 3 years or more to. 2 years goes hand in hand with how long you have Burnes, Woodruff. Adames, Tellez, Lauer, and Houser controlled for. -
Just reading too much in to an emotional. Sure he hates being moved from the team or city but that's business in baseball. Brokenheart worthy would be Hader when he was traded away to a team with less chance at making playoffs than team was currently on. Once Contreras catches some of the Brewers pitching he'll get pumped for his future with the team.

Brewers Acquire Owen Miller From CLE; Feliciano DFA'd
brewcrewdue80 replied to Brewcrew82's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
He didn't hit enough HRs in 21(and Wiemer did). The increase last year goes in line why I think he could return. Mitchell maybe too jumps back up. They can slide Wiemer just outside top 100 after hitting less HRs in more ABs. -
And more money headed into the luxury tax. To the point how much value Burnes and Woodruff must have? I'm thinking Woodruff at 32-35mil per and Burnes at 40+Mil per at the moment. Only thing holding Woodruff back on 40Mil is a season over 200IP. He's got 2 to make it happen. Glad to see Rodon in AL East. See how long his health holds up as well as pitching home games in a hitters park.

Miller & Toro I'm thinking are depth and headed for AAA. I think when you acquire a 3B FA (Turner), that Urias moves to 2b, Turang is backup 2b/SS. Brosseau is backup 3b. It does take two to tango and Taylor continues a non-intrest in playing for Milw. We're out ahead in that scenario with Toro and now Miller. As of now I'm at Yelich, Winker, Mitchell, Taylor, Frelick, Tellez, Adames, Urias, Contreras, Caratini, Brosseau, Turang, and Hiura for 13 batters. You get Turner or another starting 3b, I'm trading Hiura then 1st or Taylor 2nd. Miller as mentioned, I view him as security in case some moves change the roster as it stands. In case of injury. And seeing if he continues on an upward trend entering age 27 to make room on roster. (Plus Spring Training fan winning on those SS games) -

Turang does have CF experience after last season. (I'd imagine in pinch they can find a position out there that completes 3 OF because I wouldn't play him over Mitchell in CF) Tyrone Taylor still is on the team. I just can't see Milw starting the season without Frelick on Opening day roster. Top 3 in RoY is all that it takes to be awarded the draft pick. Turang it'll be interesting if he finds himself on 2 lists when preseason rankings are updated. Maybe the knowledge with Wong gone, 2b is open they'll put him in top 100 since he'd graduate off the list only some weeks later. All that said, you put Frelick, Mitchell, Yelich, Winker, Taylor there's 5 deep. -
Man I'd think Chourio straight up may be a hard sell. What a stud in the making. Switch hitting SS/3b. Looks better via splits as a LHB than RHB so he has the platoon side you want for a switch hitter really love the fact checking he faced 1 LHP as a LH bat and hit a HR off them. Like Chourio, all but 1 pitcher he faced last season was older than him.(every pitcher was for Chourio!) Considering the OF prospects Mitchell, Frelick, and Wiemer, I'd certainly be willing to do that heads up trade involving Chourio.

Off topic but Reds related and mild rant. Min rumor is open to a Sonnt Gray or Kenta Maeda trade. I went over to check on Gray's stats because I've felt folks thought of him as a #2 near #1 but he produced #4 numbers. Guess he had a decent couple seasons. Min acquired Gray from Cincy and I thought what did they give up? Min sent over their 1st rd selection in 2021 Chase Petty only. Sonny Gray is being paid 12+Mil this season which after Bassitt's FA deal must be 5mil savings Im thinking. So who's this Chase Petty a top 100 prospect I'm sure? Drafted out of HS 1st rd 2.5Mil signing. 70grade FB and 50s across the board. Pitched near 100innings last season below 4ERA good SO/BB rates. Yet here he is #9 for Cincy top 30 prospects. And I'm thinking immediately had the Dodgers, Atl, Yankees, and Cardinals drafted Petty in 1st rd with 2.5M signing, he'd be between 50-80 overall once the list was updated after the draft. Probably top 30 now after his 22 season when preseason lists update. Think Michael Kopech because he jad 100MPH velocity, that's what Petty has! He just was drafted to wrong organization. Just remember that name Petty as he'll be carving up Brewer hitters. For the deep fantasy baseball players out there you may want to stash or trade for him before mid-season passes. Another case in point here maybe towards Ruiz giving back such a return. Petty brought back Gray + a minor leaguer. (Oh I will say that the way Petty is progressing by prospect rankings is what I wish it were more like) Never liked a 1st rd choice immediately being added as top 25 or 50. 85-100 sure, but let's see a season played professionally before anointing them in upper tier of prospects. 1 bad immediate injury with a long recovery and now they are sitting in that spot with low if any games played. OK rant over.
