  1. The Brewers are already in year four of making the playoffs, year five of being competitive. Most of the key players on the team are under control for the next three years, that brings us out to year seven or eight, so we're about halfway through the decade already.
  2. Of course they matter. The easiest way to set reasonable expectations is by understanding what sort of odds one faces in the first place. Long suffering isn't a requirement, it's just what history tells us is more often than not the path taken & as such, minimal expectations are probably in order. An enormous disappointment over losing what essentially amounts to a coin flip? Thee most dominant pitching staff in team history, pretty forgettable?
  3. I said the same thing last off season and last year it may have been possible. What team exists in the venn diagram overlap of "would willingly take on Yelich's negative value contract" and "Yelich would waive his NTC to join this team"? I don't see anybody last or this year who fits the bill. The odds of Yelich hitting a home run today are infinitely higher than the odds of him getting traded anytime soon, so I'll waste my time dreaming about the former.
  4. My thoughts exactly. IMO with a loss today, this team is 'fart in the wind' fodder. A less exciting finish than 2008, a team that had the distinction of making us respectable again. We've had 3 good teams in the past 4 years; it's totally natural to feel how we do at this point. It's time to get over the hump. Winning divisions isn't satisfying anymore. I'm too young for '82, I grew up on ONLY losing and I still feel this way. Time to get over the hump? Since their last World Series win the Yankees have been in 9 of 12 postseasons without so much as a WS appearance. Since their last World Series win the Cardinals have made 7 of 10 postseason with a lone WS loss their best result. The stacked Nationals needed five postseason trips in eight years before they got over the hump. The even more stacked Dodgers needed eight postseasons & a pandemic weirdened season to get over the hump. The Brewers are just getting started, expecting them to get over the postseason hump on an accelerated timetable compared to what organizations with more resources & talent did is probably setting one's self up for disappointment.
  5. They should be pretty used to postseason failure by now. This is the Dodgers ninth straight season participating, they've won 820 games over that stretch, the next best team is NYY at 759, a whopping 61 games behind, or about 7 wins per year. Yet despite this extended dominance the Dodgers only World Series win so far was in the pandemic weirdened season. The Yankees haven't even made a WS. STL & CLE are 3rd/4th in wins during the Dodgers run of dominance & have just a WS loss each to show for it. The playoffs are hard for everybody.
  6. No team has had a more dramatic turnaround on the offensive side the last couple years than the San Francisco Giants. Their hitting coach, Justin Viele, never played in the Majors. Despite scoring the most runs in the NL this year, the Dodgers are six outs from getting shutout for the 2nd time in three games, maybe they need to fire their hitting coach Robert Van Scoyoc too? He never played in the Majors either.
  7. I don't see Yelich waiving his NTC to go to NYC.
  8. I didn't get to watch the game, but it could be that the Brewers game plan was only to swing early at pitches they thought could do damage on & the Braves counter was to target locations early in the count where Brewers players were less likely to swing. I don't know where each of the called strikes were, but depending on the location, batter, count, etc, a take could be a better decision than a swing.
  9. They finished in last place last year, so they're kinda due.
  10. & Ji-Man can't make the scoop at 1B to complete the ex-Brewer trifecta.
  11. Looks like Gruden has resigned as HC of the Raiders. Would assume by resigning he forgoes the 60+ million left on his deal.
  12. Yelich has a full no trade clause.
  13. Never despair before its officially over Gonna get in a lotta trouble that way Give it some time You gotta have some faith Up is the only way the offense can go from here Never doesn't mean it has to be like this forever Gonna take time to get things figured out Let things play out a little longer You think we could trade some guys from the minors for MLB bats Down goes another Miller's High Life after that game
  14. Single season splits vs LHP are automatically a small sample, only 89 PAs for Tyrone this year and 126 PAs for Yelich. A multi season look will generally be a better representation of the ever elusive "true talent level". Problem is Taylor only has 19 PAs vs LHP before this year. He posted a .669 OPS in those PAs bringing his career line to .807 OPS over 108 PAs vs LHP. It's also tricky for Yelich since he's been a different hitter post-2018-19, when he posted .983 OPS | 192 PAs and .936 OPS | 202 PAs vs LHP. But even then, he posted a career best season vs LHP in 2020 with 1.068 OPS | 72 PAs...which almost further reinforces just how fluky single season splits vs LHP can be.
  15. Lineup should be interesting. Manny over Omar vs LHP has been the way all season, so would expect that to continue. Think Tyrone will be the first PH vs a lefty. Short of injury I'd guess Yelich / Cain / Avisail start every postseason game. Urias would require sitting one of Rowdy or Escobar. Rowdy was the hero yesterday & Escobar has better splits vs LHP. Pretty tough call. Having a DH would make navigating all this at least a little easier. Maybe next year.
  16. Dodgers entered the game tonight on an eight game winning streak. They'd won 10 of their last 11, 13 of their last 15, 19 of their last 22. All that momentum got them a grand total of zero runs.
  17. Say it ten more times for the people on the back. Regular Brain: "the only way to win is to score more runs than your opponent." Galaxy Brain: "but what if you allow fewer runs than your opponent instead?"
  18. I knew the injury was bad. But those are pretty decent numbers. I will be interested how next year goes for him. His throwing motion definitely had serious injury written all over it Yeah, Sale's motion & slight frame have always seemed like an injury waiting to happen, but from his first year as a stater in 2012 through his last year before injury in 2019 he posted the 13th most games started (232), 6th most innings (1,535), 3rd best FIP WAR (42.8) & 5th best runs allowed WAR (42.1). I don't think he'll reach those heights again because Top 4 Starter Over An 8 Year Stretch is a pretty high bar for anyone to clear, but I could see Sale putting up a 2022 line looking something like Lance McCullers from this year (162 IP | 136 ERA+ | 3.5 WAR).
  19. I can never decide what's funnier between Larry Jones or Gerald Posey. Ryan Tellez also doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
  20. Sale is coming back from injury & posted a 3.16 ERA | 150 ERA+ | 3.69 FIP line over 9 GS | 42 IP this year vs career marks of 3.03 ERA | 140 ERA+ | 2.92 FIP. He had a bad inning, but with 3/85 left on his contract I don't think Sale's career is done.
  21. Urias was 3rd by bWAR / 5th by fWAR on the team this year, his bat is a wash with Rowdy but he offers more value both on the bases & afield, so I think he'll get the nod in a slightly juggled version of NYChez's guess... Wong 2B Adames SS Escobar 1B Garcia RF Yelich LF Urias 3B Narvaez C Cain CF Burnes P
  22. Maile is definitely a contender for one of the last spots. Omar, Manny, Rowdy, Vogelbach, Escobar, Wong, Adames, Urias, Peterson, Yelich, Cain, Avisail, Tyrone is 13. Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Houser, Hader, Boxberger, Strickland, Suter, Cousins, Ashby is 11. First of all, huge credit to the training staff for getting all of the clear top guys on the roster to Game 1 of the NLDS healthy & ready to go. That leaves two spots for some combination of Maile, JBJ, Reyes, Anderson, Sanchez or Gustave. Ideally they wouldn't need to use whichever pair makes it anyway, but I'd give Maile the edge over JBJ on the position player side because it gives you a safety net if you PH Piña, who is the 2nd best RH option on the bench. JBJ would really only be there to pinch run since none of Yelich, Cain or Avisail are getting pulled for their defense.
  23. On the broadcast, they said Javier Baez was the last to steal home in a playoff game. Hmmm, thought I heard that on MLB Network. The Baez steal there was a pitch, then a throw from C to 3B, then a throw back home from 3B, so I must have missed a qualifier in there somewhere.
  24. Yeah, the signs were all there during the weird pandemic shortened season, so it was cool to see it carry over into a full 162 game season with (almost) everyone making it to the finish line & ready to go in the post season. There are 81 pitchers in franchise history with at least 250 IP, six of whom are on the team currently. By ERA- they rank 1st (Hader 53), 8th (Woodruff 74), 10th (Burnes 78), 14th (Suter 82), 16th (Houser 85) and 25th (Peralta 90).
