  1. Gio getting autocorrected to goo actually seems fitting at his moment. I am terrified every pitch he throws tonight
  2. Would have totally agreed with pinch hitting Santana there. Now, do we see goo for another inning? I say yes, but is out if anyone reaches base
  3. That's a good point. But there are also times they will steal like crazy when they have a poor throwing catcher. If pitching is as good as advertised this series, I could also see the brewers reluctant to losing a base runner via the steal.
  4. One aspect that hasn't benn talked about much is the run game. I know the dodgers have alot of lefties which are generally harder to run on, but we obviously have the advantage there. Anyone have the numbers for Grandal throwing runners out? With alot of potential close games, every base will matter.
  5. I had a similar reaction at first, but I think it's because we have been conditioned to focus so much on pitch count over the years. The stats for pitchers facing a lineup the 3rd time can't be disputed. It's pretty sound strategy to pull them at the first sign of trouble, regardless of pitch count. Our record is exibit A for this. Now, if we were spending $20 million on a starting pitcher aka Scherzer or Kershaw...that would be a different story.
  6. I agree with most that Sofia started a bit rough and has really found a nice groove. She is very solid and I feel grateful to have a reporter that knows the sport. I was a broadcast major and did alot of on air talent for Marquette. It is almost impossible to not say something wrong, stupid, or stumble when on air enough. Those who do it well should really be appreciated. I find it pretty annoying when people use one example to bash an announcer. If you want to point out a quirk you dislike, fine, but it doesn't discount the broadcaster as a hole. And yes, the LePay "break even pitch" gets to me too, but he is also a pretty solid backup for the crew.
  7. I know this is the optimism thread, but the last game before the all-star game in Pittsburgh is trouble. The Brewers may want to rest some of their 15 all-stars on that day. Well played my friend. Just when I thought you were comprising, you brought me right back in.
  8. True, but they might have a normal amount of appearances compared to others. With multiple inning appearances becoming more the norm, we are saving wear and tear from warming up nearly every day. There will be some interesting number crunching opportunity after this year to see how game/warm up pitches, appearances, innings, and days rest factor into performance.
  9. My guess is that it will be the same bullpen approach, just with knebel having the 9th. That's essentially what counsell has done here over the last 2 weeks. More comfortable with 2 inning stints and occasionally let someone finish the game besides knebel. Another thought about drake. I have been down and then a little up on him recently. There is alot of hidden value for a guy with reverse splits against switch hitters, especially those who struggle more from the left. I thought about this once a couple of weeks back when it happened in a game. I wonder if any switch hitter would hit righty verse drake? Probably not because that would look like giving a no-namer too much respect. Could be more valuable than we think verse certain lineups with multiple switch hitters. And we know baseball is a rat race for finding hidden values, even if they are small.
  10. Can never have enough positive people around you, whether in person or on tv. RIP Davey. I enjoyed your passion for the game and for brewers baseball.
  11. Undergoing teats?! What exactly are they running in NY these days? I don't know but it seems like must see t.v.. First they sign Tebow and now this. Seems like they will do anything for ratings.
  12. Couldn't agree more. In fact, watching players but against shifts is my new favorite play. Reminds me of david nielson who used to bunt for a couple of hits every year. It's smart, team baseball. Get on base and let your teammates drive you in. Being patient and drawing a walk is applauded, why not a bunt?
  13. I'm rooting very hard for villar to turn it around this year. Just might be one of those cases where he lost his confidence and might need a change of scenery to get it back, ala segura.
  14. I'll agree, chacin had not looked good. Also need to remember this is his first start with a new team and playing his old team. Probably a lot more nerves than usual making this game more likely an outlier.
  15. Clicking on this thread reminds me how gullible I can be too. With some talk about comebacks from older athletes, I was like ..why not Ray King. It also shows how much i cant wait for opening day. Well played for reposting.
  16. I'm not sure how we make this stick, but I am fully on board with the "Mr. T" nickname. Thames is jacked, only problem is he seems pretty level headed. He might not embrace it. I pity the fools who have to pitch to him today.
  17. All players only have 6 years of value. If you perform amazingly, you will hit the free agent market and demand big money. Only value of having the player first is that you can give them an extension early on like we did with Braun or lucroy but there is still risk with that. Guerra has immense value because he is cheap and mostly cost controlled for the remainder of his career. A team like the rays could deal for him now and trade him again in 2 years for essentially the same level of prospects. I think most of us here are under valuing Guerra due to the unique nature of his age, production, and price.
  18. To say that your opinions are fact because they are supported by empirical evidence is faulty because everybody bases their opinions from factual evidence. As stated by other posters before, people weigh things differently. When you listed all the limitations such as his plate appearances, I immediately thought about his amazing durability. Of all people, fans of Packers quarterbacks should know how valuable durability is. This is routinely, in my opinion, an undervalued trait when looking at athletes. Durability maintains stability in an organization. It doesn't equate to winning, but it helps. I'm not sure if I have Ichiro in my top 50, but all this information has to be valued and that value is somewhat based on opinion. Unfortunately for Ichiro, much of his value came from areas that are more difficult to measure such as durability, leadership, work ethic, and even defense. We can count how many runners he threw out, but it is much more difficult to count the number of runners who didn't try to take an extra base because of his reputation. This preventative value also helped his team win games. It's similar to the difficulty of comparing great cornerbacks because the best ones are never tested. How much does it influence a teams chance of winning when we only throw to one side of the field.
  19. Glad to hear BA was extended. I for one thought he would be heading to greener pastures sooner than later. I agree that BA can be bland at times, but he usually throws in some good lines in each game. He's no Matty V, but to me, BA is soooo much better than Darren Sutton that I don't want the Brewers to have to back to the well and risk another awful announcer. As a low-mid market team, I think we are absolutely outperforming our expected entertainment from the announcing team (of course, besides the horrendous pre/post game coverage)
  20. I never understand why people always crave base stealing at the top of the order. How many times have you heard someone complain about a baserunner getting thrown out with a good hitter at the plate. I would rather have my speed demons at the 5-8 spot so they can try to self manufacture a run with worse hitters up. Now, Gomez needs to be in the top of the order because he is just an overall good hitter, but having him bat 5th wouldn't be the worst so he can steal with singles hitters behind him like segura or gennett so he can score from second. OBP and good baserunning should be valued at the top of the order, not base stealing.
  21. When thinking of matching up number 1 pitchers in a wild card game, it could be a close race to get in so teams might not be able to line up their pitchers the way they want. So, for example, if the dodgers need to win game 161 and 162 to get in, Kershaw will not necessarily be their wildcard game starter. So our well balanced pitching staff does not look so bad given the races are tight and teams can't line up their starters the way they want.
  22. Well said Monty. While I both like/dislike the bunt at times, it says a lot for creating a culture of team ball which can be vastly underestimated in the realm of sabermetrics. I remember the days of Sexson, Jenkins, and Hernandez all swinging for the fences every at bat. They got their homers, but usually while up or down 3 runs and it did not even matter. Sacrificing personal stats and personal glory for the team ultimately leads to better chemistry and more wins...at least that's what I think.
