I don't know how often MLB pitchers walk the leadoff hitter with a 5-run lead, but one time is too often. I understand that guys are trying to focus on repeating mechanics and just doing the same thing regardless of situation (tunnel vision, etc.), but a little situational awareness goes a long way. -

Great post. And there's a story about speed and slugging being overvalued, too. It's a cliche to talk about Moneyball, but the Brewers really are playing a different game than most of the rest of the league. It's a little harder to see, a little more on the margins, but a lot of fast guys who understand the strike zone and put the ball in play can be a great offensive recipe, even without exit velocity and barrels. On the pitching side, I really think it's finding "piggy-back" guys. A lot of starters whose stuff plays up when they only have to throw 4 or 5 innings, and then you bring another guy like that in, only he can do 2 innings. Somewhere along the way, baseball started training everybody to either throw 7 innings or 1, and the Brewers figured out that you can condition players to do the median and pull from a larger population since pretty much every pitcher has spent most of his career trying to get 6+ outs.

Good one for Abner. Worked out. No such thing as a gravy game against the Cubs, but taking 2 of 3 is a nice guarantee.

This feels like one of those Pat Murphy challenging guys to do their job. I think letting Ashby face Suzuki was the same thing. I don't mind that in the big picture, but this is maybe not the spot I'd do it. But, hey. Two big outs so far.

I don't like going to Uribe here. 3-run lead, go with the guy who throws strikes. Hope I'm wrong.

Bad infield defense from Hamilton--Mis got him off the hook. Let's see if Patrick can do the same for Rengifo.

Yeah...You're 3-1 on Turang, down 3-0 in the 7th, and you throw that pitch. Just walk the dude.

I was surprised to see Mis out, but I understand. It is still a May game. He's had trouble in these later innings before. You have a really rested bullpen. Save the guy some pitches and a few ups, as long as you trust what's coming behind him. Do I? [shrugs] I get it. Probably not what I would have done. 60-40 call.

Up 3-0, I think Murph sticks with Bauers for defense. Plus, he's been scalding it.

I can't tell if Hamilton bunting every AB is hilarious, pathetic, or impressive. I would go: 50% hilarious, 40% impressive, and 10% pathetic.

Really could use a run or two here just to take the sting out of failing to score the last two innings.

That's what Hamilton does well. Bunts and runs. Should that be enough to stick on this roster? I don't think so. Is it worth a postseason roster spot? Maybe. Is it a valuable enough skillset to stick in the org? I think it should be. Ugh. Not good ABs from Jackson and Turang. That Brown slider is nasty.

When you're in the position Hamilton is on this roster, that's one you want back. Hopefully Mis corrects, but that play is going to cost him 15 pitches.

I wouldn't send down Joey O for Pratt or Williams. I know that offense stinks, but the guy's glove has value on this roster, and we've seen it over and over and over. Rengifo/Hamilton seem like better options. We're paying Rengifo, so maybe he gets a longer leash. Hamilton has options, though, and doesn't seem to offer much aside from being a good bunter/pinch-runner. That's a good postseason roster option, but seems like he'd be an easy send to Nashville.

Wind environment looks more neutral tonight. Mostly left to right, 10mph at most We'll see how that holds. Might be some rain too. Probably a significantly more pitcher-friendly night that last night, especially considering the guys on the bump.

Ashby hasn't pitched in three days. Can I bet on him being put into the game?

This. I liked Isaac Collins, but he's really not any different than Lockridge, Perkins, Badoo, etc. He's a guy who can be fine for you and put together good ABs, but the Brewers have that in spades. Mears is doing well enough with the Royals, but he's got less control than Zerpa, and is making twice the salary. The Brewers took a low risk flyer on a guy they thought had upside. That upside is not going to show up this year, unfortunately. But he'll have another shot. Good bullpen arms are expensive. If you think he's got the stuff, you shell out a measly $2M for a guy who might well be a late-inning option down the stretch next year. Not every move works right away, or at all. The process is what matters, and I think that was sound here. We can reasonably disagree about the utility of Isaac Collins on this roster. My belief is that he wouldn't add anything. I'm open to the idea he'd be a slight upgrade. I just don't think this is a trade we'll know the outcome of for a few years, and even if we lose it, it won't be because we made a mistake. It'll be because sometimes trades just don't work out. And, besides, isn't it nice to "lose" a trade every once in a while just so teams keep coming back to you for business? (half blue)

This is why the challenge system is great. You not only have to know the strike zone, you have to gauge your certainty level, compare it to the game situation, and make a decision within a few seconds. It's like a challenge in Scrabble. You not only have to know the words you can play. You have to be confident enough in your knowledge to call out your opponent when they make an illegal move.

Yeah, I feel bad for Sproat not being able to get just one more out, but going to Drohan for Happ is obviously the correct call. Really, the walk to Hoerner was the mistake that inning. I didn't think the Swanson homer was too bad of a pitch. Want it in a little more, maybe, but credit to Dansby for just pulling the hands in.

Been fun. Win is still blowing out. Definitely don't want to lose focus here because things turn quick at Wrigley. So far, Sproat's sinker has been excellent. You'll take the ground ball single up the middle on this kind of night.

Quinn Priester sighting in the dugout? Don't know if that means he's getting ready to rejoin, or if they're slowing him down after the rough rehab outing the other day.
