I think Suter was the best choice. It didn't work, but the guy's been great in short stints (and good in longer ones pre-surgery) for going on a year now. Plus, the Dodgers are worse against lefties. Didn't work. Happens.
I think the speed is such a big part of it. When runners are on, it is much more normal for the hitter. No idea of the numbers back that up, but a theory.
The Dodgers are so good. I know totally different sports, but I think the blueprint for beating the Twins and Dodgers this year is just make them feel pressure a la the NCAA tournament. That was the Cubs in the playoffs for ages.
Also, the Cardinals played like 44 fewer innings than every other team. That's basically 5 games worth of outs they didn't have to get. Edit: plus the two games they didn't have to make up.
Yeah, the Williams news is...not good. But good not to risk anything at this point. I think it's Topa and/or Rasmussen, and we'll go from there. Give them a shot and hope.
My big question is how Topa and/or Rasmussen will be deployed. I think ideally, you'd want Suter for at least three. I think Hader/Williams try to cover 3 innings too, if there's a lead. The middle part will be Yardley at some point, and then who knows.
I feel for the Twins. What a brutal, brutal way to lose. 17 consecutive playoff losses is now a solely held North American, major sport record. The Blackhawks lost 16 playoff games in a row in the 70s and 80s. I find it just amazing that both of those streaks have occurred in the two sports where you'd think they'd be least likely. Playoff baseball games feel like they are always around 50-50. Hard to believe.
Count me aboard the nothing-to-lose train. Might as well win the whole thing, I guess. And, hey, if we can just shut the Dodgers out for 18 straight innings, I'm like 60 percent confident we'll sweep.
Well, Pagan got it done. I'll say this: If the Giants get one, I hope they get two. The theatrics of extra innings deciding this things would be too much.
