  1. If Winker played decent defense anywhere, you might be able to carry him under the "professional hitter/clubhouse guy" category. I like him, honestly. But there just isn't much value I'm seeing at this point IF the organization feels at all confident in anyone who specializes in hitting right-handed pitching at the AAA level.
  2. Reds were going to put up runs today. Offense going to have to win one. Obviously, I want the sweep, but getting the top BP guys two days off isn't the worst thing in the world should the Brewers be unable to come back.
  3. Holy crap, that should have been a no-no. Not quite Jim Joyce costing that guy a perfecto but still... Also, re: Turang. I'll take 2018 Arcia if we get playoff Arcia and maybe bunt if we're in one of those first and second, nobody out situations in the the 12th inning or whatever of a pivotal Game 4 NLCS.
  4. Yeah, Elvis seems more like an attraction than an imposter at this point, don't he?
  5. Every time anyone brings up Glendon Rusch, I'm obligated to bring up the time he walked off the Mets (?) with a bunt single. Second best hit in Brewer history, and would be number 1 if not for Tony Plush 😉.
  6. Burnes will be okay. Got lightheaded it looked like.
  7. I guess I fail to see why Hiura wouldn't at least be worth a shot. Jones made a big impression in....one AB. We're talking about the last position-player spot on the roster, where Hiura is basically only going to be used offensively. Maybe he gets one or two starts at 1B. I certainly get the perspective that he's not a long-term solution to anything, but there's not much to lose in making him the DH and having him available for PH duty on days when he's out of the lineup.
  8. To me, this was a trade a team like the Brewers just has to make to be long-term competitive. Hader was on of the most valuable pitchers in the game, and he wasn't going to be around much longer. They took a shot to replace his contributions I. The short-term with Rogers. That failed. Every other part of the trade has worked out very well, though, and that longer term outlook was always the point.
  9. Burnes, Houser, Miley is how I'd lineup...I think a groundball guy like Houser is a better bet at GAB, though I haven't checked his numbers there.
  10. Massive win, and, as someone mentioned yesterday, taking the season series against the Reds may matter. 2 wins away from that.
  11. Shows what I know betting on the over today, haha.
  12. Watching the replay of the Perkins double play. Too much to ask for Miller to just stop and start backpedaling to first?
  13. Yelich does not seem nearly as fast as our announcers are always saying. He's a GREAT baserunner, but that looked like it should have been a lot closer of a play at first, especially given what Turang just did on a ground ball to second. I'm not complaining. Just wondering what the heck Rock and BA keep talking about.
  14. Yeah, all good stuff. I don't what to think about Anderson. I hope you're right, but I think he is the classic "just a guy." Hopefully a hot stretch is coming, though.
  15. Yeah, the problem is you have to splice together a bunch of camera angles and average them out. Hawkeye in tennis takes like a full minute by the time all is said and done. That's a long time to wait for a call with a 3 mm margin of error (which is ridiculously tiny, I know, but very often the difference between swing and no swing).
  16. The other thing on check swings (as the Brewers are about to drop this one) is that there isn't a rule book definition on them, at least not a concrete one. So that's got to change first. I'm just hoping baseball can figure out a way to properly integrate technology. Soccer has been mostly a mess. Hockey does it great (though that's partly down to the nature of the game). Positives from this one: Uribe. Payamps and Devin are both good for tomorrow, plus we'll have a starter capable of multiple innings if needed. Adames is really starting to hit it hard. Reds had to use a lot of bullpen guys. I think the Brewers are going to be in playoff contention all the way to the end. Take 2 of 3 tomorrow and this homestand has been a success.
  17. Is there actually some tech in development to automate that? I'd be fascinated if that were the case...I just feel like, given the speed and size of the bat head (and the difficulty of getting a perfect overhead angle), even an automated call is going to have a margin of error that essentially replicates where we are now. Meaning, instead of the umpire guessing, it'll just be the technology. I suppose you could embed trackers in the bat (but which part?) and cameras at the very front of the plate (but how big are the cameras?), but that seems like it would be tough. And now the crappy balk call costs the Brewers a run.
  18. Problem is, no amount of automation is going to help check swings. Check swings are the nobody-knows-what-happened zone of baseball. It's just a totally subjective call in a lot of cases and always will be. I also blame Anderson on De La Cruz's awesome (though frustrating) steal of home. You just have to at least pretend you might move back toward third.
  19. The Brewers are going to get a walk-off win today. It's going to be excruciating but awesome. I feel it.
  20. I am not that worried about using Williams. Payamps and Peguero get days, and Houser or Teheran will be available for BP duty over the next two days. Get the win, win the series tomorrow, get greedy Sunday.
  21. My dad once told me the biggest difference in baseball is the difference between a 4-run lead and a 5-run lead. I think about that a lot.
  22. 106 mph off-the-bat from Anderson. I guess that's either one for the "exit velo" is overrated crowd or one for "launch angle" crowd. Shutdown inning would be awesome.
  23. Let's get into this Reds bullpen. I want our top guys getting a rest tonight!
  24. Love the way the offense has been playing lately. We've had the "never out of it" quality we've admired in the Reds the last week anyway. That's something!
