  1. More disappointed in the offense failing so often than Freddy, but man. Maybe the Marlins blow another late lead. Otherwise, I guess just back at this torture-ball mañana.
  2. Cubs up 1-0...should've had more in the first. Two guys thrown out at the plate.
  3. I've honestly always wondered why leagues like the MLS and NWSL don't try to put pro teams in smaller cities. I can't imagine a pro women's or men's soccer team doing poorly, even in a place that doesn't scream soccer culture. Tons of small, pro-sports-less cities (Omaha, Des Moines, Louisville, etc.) seem like great opportunities for the newer domestic leagues. I suppose the NWSL tried this once with that team from Western New York (and they did pretty well in attendance drawing from an even smaller town before moving to NC). I just think, if I were I pioneering millionaire with enough money to buy a pro sports franchise, I might move an NWSL team to the Quad Cities or something on the idea that, in a really fractured market, lower levels of intense, local support are what's going to carry a team.
  4. I guess I get giving guys the day, but aren't the Cardinals off tomorrow? If it were me, I'd want to do all I could to avoid facing a division rival in the playoffs. Especially one that's basically played you to a dead heat over 19 games, one that's hit Wainwright well, and one that's got a couple three dangerous pitchers they can start against you....
  5. Great outing from Devin. Wow. Felt like the season right there.
  6. I don't think we're gonna make the playoffs. But if we make the playoffs we're gonna beat the Cardinals. Let's go!
  7. Good start in Philly. Braves up 2-0. Gotta get this thing down to 1, 1.5 after Cards series. They do that, I might believe. I think they can pick off 5 or 6 of those last seven, and I think one of Philly or SD drops 4. Starts tonight.
  8. Yeah, they are. Realistically, you'd feel good going 10-3. Phillies would need 9-5 to get that last spot.
  9. Mark A official at Norwich as of last week. Probably a favorite to be a Premier League owner next year.
  10. Two matches in to the EPL and my question is whether anyone can challenge City. I have a good feeling about Arsenal for some reason. Leeds has been a fun story. Looking forward to watching the US in the World Cup with what will have to be its most talented roster ever.
  11. While I mostly agree, Norwich is a good buy for anyone looking to "buy low" on a team with real prospects. Smart move by Mark A, and it may actually help the Brewers long-term if it works out.
  12. I mean, PNC or whatever it's called now was bound to deliver it's annual dose of horror at some point (especially since we haven't encountered a rain delay there yet, have we?). So, check that off the list. I'm not that worried about these last two terrible games, but then again I'm not really a believer in this group either. I think they'll get it together enough to get to the playoffs, and that will be a success. Woody rights the ship tomorrow, and we remind ourselves there's 58 games left.
  13. I thought the same on the timing. I mean, that's just terrible luck. There wasn't room for Severino on the roster, but man. Couldn't get any worse.
  14. I don't understand what anyone's saving Taylor Rogers for....
  15. I think this is a fair read. I'm more optimistic than you in the sense that I think this roster is good enough to make the playoffs (and should), but I absolutely agree that this team is limited. I think you have to bite the bullet on Severino at this point. You're really gonna have him sitting around doing nothing 95% of the time so he can play in 23? That seems wild to me (and I know you explicitly said it's not necessarily a good reason).
  16. I mean, Burnes had a really bad inning after being staked a 3-run lead. Couldn't throw strikes. That's frustrating, but that and some bad defense after Box came in give you an L. I think CC definitely got too cute playing matchups in the 7th. But Brosseau is on the roster for one reason--hit LHP. Instead, he got hit. Cutch couldn't get it done. Severino gets one AB a week. 7-3 since the break and +1.5 on the Cards I'll take. Gained ground on PhIlly and quite a bit on the slumping Giants. It's all good, folks. This is going to be tight all the way to the end, but the Brewers have the best team.
  17. Yeah, I just think the right deal wasn't there. And, sadly, due to the economics of baseball, the Brewers cannot afford deadline overpays. It sucks. But I think we're dealing with the structure of the sport (which means the best strategy for Milwaukee is to try to be perpetually in the playoff hunt and to avoid ever going all-in) rather than front office failure.
  18. Alright, it's the game thread, so obviously venting is healthy. I'm not concerned with PHing that much. Fine. You have the roster space, might as well use it. I'm not concerned with Bixberger giving up a run. Bad defense, and, without the deadline moves, that's probably Gotta in that position. Okay. At this point, the 3 catchers should be done. There aren't enough ABs. You probably tried to trade one of those guys and didn't get the right offer. Severino seems like he should go. Somebody probably grabs him, but what are you gonna do? Isn't Hiura more valuable right now?
  19. Frustrating. Carrying three catchers is weird in the regular season. Like, Severino getting one AB every few days. Can you really send him up there and expect a lot in that situation?
  20. Awful inning. Walks, a passed ball, a throwing error. Can't have that when you're trying to win games via run prevention. Hope the offense can bail them out tonight.
  21. Wheels came off there for Corbin. New game. 3 innings. Let's see how this works.
  22. Man, a lot of people have serious Cardinals PTSD if they thing Quintana and Montgomery should scare anyone. I get it. But the idea that the Cardinals had a better deadline seems strange to me (both teams feel to me like they made marginal upgrades).
  23. I'll play and echo Eye Black's sentiments at least partially. This is the approach I would have taken. The MLB team is better. The farm system is better, or at least not worse. I just don't think there was a good fit in terms of a position player, at least not once Bell came off the board. Soto was going to be too costly. In terms of this year, here's how I see it: the Brewers are going to have to play a best of 3 series where runs will be at a premium. Are you really going to sacrifice future value for 12 ABs that won't be much of an upgrade over what we have? The value of a clean inning is so high in the playoffs, and it seems smart to lean in to relievers, especially when they are pretty cheap comparatively speaking. I've been a fan of Stearns' approach since the Thornburg trade. The dude knows how to value bullpen pieces. His record is much more mixed on offense (Daniel Norris excepted). The Rosenthal trade is weird. But, again, you're trading a guy who will probably not become an MLB player for a decent shot at clean postseason innings. I actually like our lineup. I know Stearns "pretty deep already" stuff is GM talk, but there's truth there too. B/B+. I'll be the Kool-Aid drinker, I guess if that's what it comes down to.
