  1. I think they've spent like $38 million on the bullpen too. I believe you're describing Tyler Chatwood...you left out all the other mediocre pitchers on $8m/year deals. Stuff like this is honestly why it blows me away when people say Theo is such a good GM. He got insanely lucky with Arrieta and a couple very high draft picks, and then blew all his prospect capital going for it for a couple years. The Cubs are probably looking at a couple more years of mediocrity before they bust up their core and go into rebuild mode for a few years. How often do teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, etc...the highest payroll teams...need to go into total rebuild? Answer...5-6 years after Theo comes to town. No other GM leaves such catastrophic messes in his wake.
  2. Yes, they need to still win every series and they would be in great shape. If they either finish the sweep of the Marlins or win the series vs Padres instead of a split, they could probably afford to even drop 2 of the Cardinals series. Call me greedy, but the Cardinals aren't hitting right now against really bad pitching in Colorado. I'm a bit more hopeful that we can take it to the Cardinals after this tune-up series.
  3. We have more than a sneaky chance at it, primarily because take a look at the Nationals schedule. Braves, Cardinals, Phillies, Marlins, Indians...and still one more against the Twins. Yeah they'll probably smash the Marlins but every other team is a legit contender.
  4. +1. I'm not going to look it up, but didn't the cardinals recently win a world series as a wildcard team with something like 86 or 87 regular season wins? Basketball is seemingly the only sport where the best team almost always tends to win a 7 game series. In baseball, any team can get hot for a month and make a run.
  5. I was a bit skeptical of the youtube doctor diagnosis of 3-4 months minimum, but I'm obviously not a professional so wasn't about to refute it without facts. Im also not necessarily going to believe anything jim bowden says, but 6-8 weeks tends to be the normal timeline given for fractures. So i buy a 6-8 week timeline more than 3-4 months or possibly more as was noted by the youtube doctor. If it's 6, i think he would be back for the NLCS at best. Considering everything, hard to imagine seeing yelich play again in 2019. This news means he probably has a fairly normal offseason and is ready for 2020 though
  6. From what I saw, the Falcons have a small/fast defense...making them fairly easy to run on. The Packers this year have a lot of big dudes...it won't be as easy to muscle around our front 7.
  7. Did anyone else stay up late last night to watch the Cubs lose in extras on a walk off walk on 4 pitches? In a game where Bryant was virtually unstoppable...their pitching staff is utter garbage behind their rotation. And their rotation full of old dudes on the verge of hip replacements is finally starting to show their age and get hit around a bit. Can they please extend Joe Maddon? I love watching him overuse their bullpen and run all their relievers out of gas by mid-August.
  8. How is their schedule easier than ours? We both play cincy We both play Miami but we get one more game - advantage brewers We both play the cards We both play the Padres but they get two more games. We essentially swap those extra two Padres games for the Rockies - advantage brewers They play 4 vs the Mets and we get the Pirates instead - huge advantage brewers I said possibly easier. Those extra games vs the Padres without Tatis could make it easier. Regardless, it's definitely a pretty easy schedule...they are in a position to win a lot of games. Fortunately, they lost the first 2 against the Mets and gave us a bit of cushion.
  9. Baseball is a crazy game. The best record of all time is 116-46 Mariners...that team lost around 30% of its games. Much more common, is having a couple teams win just over 100 games...so a 104-58 team loses almost 35% of its games. Even the 108 win Red Sox last year had stretches where they lost 5 of 7 games and were even swept once by the Rays in a 3 game series. Point being, any team has a very real shot at beating any team in the playoffs. Any team that gets in can get hot and play well together at the right time...and make a run. Even without a bulletproof roster and without Yelich, this team can certainly make a deep run if they get in...so rooting for them to do poorly for a draft pick at this stage is just stupid. If we were 15 games under 500, by all means root for losses...but not when in contention. Edited to 35%...at least I was close
  10. Lopez arsenal doesn't include a slider, so he's not overly tough on RH hitters despite his splits. I'd go something like Cain Grisham Grandal Moose Braun Thames Spang Perez P If Moose isn't available, Shaw would slide in after Thames probably and Spang/Perez would swap
  11. What a disheartening injury. That said, i couldn't disagree more with those concerned this will impact him long term. This is actually probably one of the least likely significant injuries to result in long term issues. I would be far and away more concerned about a wrist, shoulder, elbow, or ankle in that order. Heck a severe oblique injury might concern me more. Simple fractures also generally heal fine, it's the ligament and rotator cuff type injuries that are concerning. If he's for sure done for the season including playoffs, i would be surprised if he wasn't 100% by sometime in January
  12. Per Rosiak, Moose is available to PH today and may return to the lineup tomorrow.
  13. True, that game could've been a great excuse to give Braun another day. he definitely looks gimpier of late. But, MIA has a lefty in game 4. So logic might be to play today, off tomorrow, then play vs the lefty. Going tonight avoids the day/night back to back for Braun. Plus, with the huge OF in MIA probably want Cain out there for D I think I would have liked to see Grisham and his speed out there over Braun. Let the man get healthy, but maybe he's feeling a lot better today...who knows. I wonder how far we are from Hiura/Moose being available for PH duties as well.
  14. Nice to get the win while using none of our best pitchers yesterday. Probably only Freddy, Jackson, and Suter unavailable today...and Suter only because he's probably on a very strict usage plan. One mildly annoying thing is we used most of our RH bullpen pitchers yesterday, and most of the Marlins hitters are RH.
  15. This Hernandez is pretty similar to the guy yesterday. Soft tossing RH, slider is his best pitch, everything else is meh. We should wreck this guy. Load up the lefties again, same lineup as yesterday would be good. Eventually we need to give Grandal a day off though...
  16. We should settle any ties with a cage match. 3 guarantees in life include death, taxes, and Thames winning any and all cage matches.
  17. Yikes, Marlins are rolling out 7 RH batters and a switch against Lyles...who is way tougher on RH batters than LH batters. Official lineup - Grisham Grandal Yelich Thames Cain Spang Shaw Perez P
  18. Don't sleep on the diamondbacks, by the way. They won 8 of their last 10 including 3 of 4 vs the Dodgers. They also have possibly an easier schedule than us down the stretch. 6 vs SD, 3 vs Cin, 3 vs Mia...then 2 tough ones with the Mets and Cards.
  19. If you look at Boston's roster...Betts is about to leave, Sale has been extended and is seemingly not as effective, their farm is absolute trash. The state of that franchise is not very good...and only going to get worse in the near future. This is what happens when you make TheoDombrowski your GM/president of baseball ops.
  20. To get within a reasonable range, we for sure would need to sweep the Cards. And they haven't shown signs of slowing down yet, so that's wildly unlikely. The most likely outcome playing 3 in st louis is 1 win. Hopefully the guys aren't looking ahead and are focused on Miami. We really need to hit in this series, 8+ runs a game and make the pitching side of things trivial.
  21. It looks like the slider is this guys money pitch. Load up the lefties today. I'd actually like to see Shaw get a start at 3b today, I think Shaw will be able to hit this guy. Grisham Grandal Yelich Thames Braun Shaw Spangenberg Perez P
  22. Easy to settle in when you consistently get an extra 3 inches off the outside corner that houser isn't getting...
  23. Now he's coming out of the game. What a shady move. Guess I shouldn't be surprised. And the ball apparently never even hit him at all. Glanced off his helmet.
  24. The real question. Did they check Russell for a broken finger nail or for minor scratches? What a baby. And then for the cubs players to rally around it as if he hit him on purpose. Such a stupid stupid inning
  25. That makes me think he was never really that hurt and was milking it for gamesmanship reasons. What a slimy guy on a trash team...
