  1. I'm not ready to call us likely 90 game winners yet. This run of good play needs to extend a bit longer...as we likely will have a rough stretch at some point.
  2. My guess, CC didn't want to mess with 4 5 6. Villar has a good mentality at the plate and he's producing...maybe he doesn't want to mess with that. I think Villar is far and away the logical choice to leadoff since clearly CC wants Yelich hitting 2nd. Saladino is preferred leading off to Perez. Aaaaaand, I just noticed Bandy is starting today. 0-4 with 3ks and a GIDP...my early call.
  3. Wow, I'd rather have Suter leadoff...and no, I didn't forget to put this in blue
  4. I find it generally amazing how draft projections always have us taking an outfielder. "well they've done it the last few years, they'll probably just pick another outfielder". I haven't looked too heavily, are we actually being linked to any of these OF prospects or is it as simple as looking at our recent draft history?
  5. I personally think keeping those pieces would have helped create a package to trade for Chris Sale, a multi-year asset and stud pitcher. They definitely could have beaten the Red Sox offer, can you imagine if they had him in their rotation rather than Quintana or Darvish? Heck maybe not having to pay for Darvish enables them to actually sign Harper rather than dream about it like fools. Also in the Chris Sale deal, maybe they find a way to include Robertson or Kahnle to help the back end of the bullpen. Some level of trading was always going to have to happen for the Cubs, but had they been more patient they could have made better judgement calls on their trades and maximized their value. Also don't forget about Eloy and Cease. Especially Eloy, that guy is going to be a star...possibly a better player than Torres.
  6. Braun's DL stint was retro to 5/14, does that mean he's eligible to come off the DL Thursday? It's weird to think Braun is going to have a tough time getting PT. How do you even consider significantly reducing Aguilar's playing time? And Santana is slashing 288/341/479 over the last 30 days. Going to be interesting to see how we handle that. Oh and Thames is 4 weeks removed from surgery with an expected 6-8 week absence. A serious roster crunch is 2-4 weeks away, is there any chance we sell sky high on Aguilar in the next week or 2?
  7. All the valuations aside, I would dislike this deal immensely. I'd love Realmuto, but not at this price. This ask seems no less insane than the Rays asking price on Archer. That's more than Yelich cost, and Yelich in my opinion is far more valuable than realmuto. Adam's offer of Burnes, Nottingham, Ray, Carmona is close. Burnes and Nottingham alone is probably equal to the Indians offer, tacking on Ray and Carmona makes it a better offer. I'd be more inclined to do it if I could swap Burnes and Peralta. That still feels like a lot. Burnes/Peralta and Nottingham are very natural centerpieces in this deal, I'd probably avoid giving up Carmona if possible given our lack of SS depth in the system. As for Ray, the value he'd have at the deadline fits reasonably well. But he's also trending upward, I'll trust Stearns and Co. judgement on whether the time is right to move him for maximum value. As far as this offer, I wouldn't be willing to go too much higher...and a team like the Nationals could(and really should given Harper's pending FA) easily blow us away by including Robles or Soto in a package deal for Realmuto. For me, Hiura is off limits on a Realmuto trade so long as the front office thinks he can stick at 2b. I wouldn't even consider moving him unless we were looking at a Chris Sale to the Red Sox type situation.
  8. Thanks, those are far better comps than Rizzo...especially segura.
  9. It's just semantics. They let Hader close a game a couple days ago. In the old way of doing things, they would have brought Knebel in to close in the 9th. There will be times, like last night, where it's just natural to have Knebel close the game. Depending on how the bullpen is set up that day, game situation, etc. But Hader will continue to finish games, and even Jeffress will get a close here and there when Knebel isn't available. I personally don't think Jeffress finds his way back to a close situation unless Knebel goes back to back or something. I could see Hader getting a couple chances in multi-inning situations or if the 9th inning includes 2 lefties or something. Jeffress has been incredible, it's simply a situation where we have 4(including albers) very good relievers performing at their peak. I'm sure you all saw Knebel's save yesterday, dude completely wrecked the dbacks. His curve was quite the weapon and he was back in the 97-98 range consistently. His command was even pretty good. Knebel and Hader are our best relievers right now. That isn't a knock on Jeffress, it's honestly kinda like being the pitcher that finishes 3rd in the cy young voting. We should have at least 2 relievers pitch in the all star game, Jeffress is more deserving of that accolade than Knebel based on not missing so much time.
  10. If only it was as easy as telling a player not to swing at balls. Corey Hart would have been a multiple All-Star and Weeks may be in the HOF. It's like telling a pitcher he's at his best when he doesn't give up any walks or hits. As for Arcia, they addressed one problem, getting rid of most of the pre-pitch movement. It's also obvious they're drilling opposite field into him. He just hits way too many ground balls, and I'm sure they've been working on that too. Hitting consistently at the MLB level is tough, we all know that, but we have to remind ourselves it's VERY difficult. You see the start guys like Goldschmidt have, as one quick example. And he's an All-Star. Arcia does have a quick bat, so there's reason for hope. And, obviously, still very young. All you can do is keep working with him the cage and hope for the best. Maybe he gets hot later in the year, and in the playoffs. Let's all remember that Arcia is still 23. For every Lindor that comes up and sets mlb on fire, there's a guy that takes some time to find his groove. I hate to use a filthy cub as an example, but Rizzo was a very average 1b his first couple years before improving to a consistent 900 ops guy. With Arcia we've seen the glimpses, and I'm convinced that if his plate approach was similar to Villar's...he'd improve his OPS by 100 points. Easier said than done, but I think it's easier to improve a plate approach than to improve pure hitting ability.
  11. Remember when all the Cubs fans were talking about all the WAR their SP were going to have? Darvish -0.3 Quintana -0.1 Lester 0.5 Hendricks 0.7 Chatwood 0.8 I'm still waiting for their rotation to have the inevitable injury, they can bring that Tseng guy with the 7 ERA in AAA back up to start...
  12. We'll see how long that lasts. The AL is pretty bad, they have 4 good teams and the rest dreadful teams for the most part. The Yankees and Red Sox have barely faced any real opponents aside from each other...especially the red sox. At least one of these teams is bound to regress a bit, I don't think both teams win 100 games.
  13. I'm not saying Logan needs to go now, I was more expressing disagreement with the 10 appearances suggestion. If Logan has 9 total appearances like the 2 he's had so far he is not going to be around long enough to find out how the 10th would go. Honestly, 2 or 3 more like the one he's had would probably be enough for a pink slip if he doesn't have a few good ones to mix in there. A LOOGY doesn't get 10 appearances to figure it out. I misread the post, I thought you referred to him making 10 appearances. I'm willing to be patient with Logan because the stuff has been there, but it's going to be tough to carry him too much longer without improvement based on the arms we have. I'd really like for him to pitch in a blowout game and face maybe 6 or 7 hitters, RH and LH. Give the guy 30-35 pitches in an outing and let him work on his command a bit. It's tough to really nail down your command when every pitch is critical and you only throw maybe 6 or 7 of each pitch type to all different locations of the plate in each outing. I think it's fairly clear he should be the mop up reliever at this point, even Lopez is ahead of Logan in the pecking order for even mildly critical roles for me. I personally would give him at least 4 or 5 appearances in non-critical roles before deciding anything, and if that didn't work I'd try to find a way to DL him and send him on a long rehab outing.
  14. It's hard to say this trade was horrible. Maldonado posted 645 ops last year and has 684 this year. We took a chance on Bandy, played on upside and the options as noted. With Maldonado, we KNEW what we had. It just didn't work out. Even though Bandy is likely a bust, you can't call it a horrible trade as it's not like Maldonado is doing that much better. I'd be perfectly happy for Stearns to continue to trade fringe mlb "known quantity" guys for players with some upside. I don't think we have a single positional player aside from Bandy on the 25 man roster with less value than Maldonado would have had. Arcia is a defensive whiz, Perez and Saladino have been decent and have flexibility, Villar is turning it around and has massive(although increasingly unlikely to fulfill) upside still. I'll also agree with other posters, I'm not sure why Bethancourt isn't taking Bandy's spot. Heck it'd be nice to have Susac around right now. Maybe we can print up a cardboard cutout of Bandy to take his AB's for him, his obp would probably increase.
  15. 10 appearances? I'm not calling for Logan's immediate release. But LOOGYs are a little bit different animal. If they're not getting it done a good 80% of the time against lefties, you don't wait around all that long waiting for it to happen. This is not calling for Hader to go to AAA after 2 bad appearances or Yelich to be benched after an 0 for 15 stretch. This is much closer to a Tommy Milone 'cut your losses and move on' situation. You don't need to be all that patient with a 33 year journeyman with a career 4.48 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. I tend to agree with Plush here, it's actually been 5 total appearances for Boone Logan coming off an extended absence. The stuff is there, his location has been a problem. Boone Logan needs a bit of low leverage work to sharpen his command up, but I don't think cutting him is a good idea at this point. This also isn't tommy milone where the guy threw like 89-90 with mediocre at best off speed stuff. Logan has decent velocity and sharp break to his slider...just has to avoid middle middle. I will agree that a bit more time on his rehab assignment would have been helpful, especially in a case like his.
  16. Hopefully, it will when Anderson/Davies come back. Anderson Davies Chacin Woodruff Peralta Looks perfectly fine to me. But it is wishful thinking I'm sure. Hopefully we can keep Suter around to PH...
  17. Aguilar is slashing 299/351/448 against RHP on the season, he'll do just fine hitting 3rd...I agree with the first 6 of the lineup above. I suspect the last 3 go Pina, Arcia, Villar...Villar as a 9 hole table setter for the top of the order.
  18. It's really quite nice having Williams, Lopez, and Jennings/Logan as the mop-up type guys...with Jeffress, Hader, Knebel, and Albers to some degree as the back end guys. I think many teams would feel great about having Williams as their setup guy. I've also noticed and generally like how CC has been using Williams in the 9th inning of a 4 or 5 run game. He's done it at least a few times, gives him the mentality of finishing a game at the mlb level.
  19. Not terrible, but Santana should not be hitting 3rd right now. Cain, Yelich, Shaw, Aguilar are your options at the 3 spot. I would go Cain, Yelich, Aguilar, Shaw, Santana, Choi, Pina, Arcia, Villar...against a lefty you could switch Perez and Choi, and maybe get Saladino in there for Villar or Arcia.
  20. I closed the game down on my work computer, but last I saw we weren't up by 20 runs...
  21. I hope we use all of Lopez, Albers, and Logan in these last 4 innings.
  22. I'll add Villar has been basically a replacement level defender at 2b, which is fine. We don't need a star at 2b to be a succcessful team, just a solid regular.
  23. Yeah, I think it's time to put anti-villar talk on hold for a bit. He's swinging it well lately. He pretty clearly isn't trying to hit HR anymore and is just trying to get on base. Love the approach. He also sees a lot of pitches generally which is a bonus.
  24. Our offense is being carried early on by Shaw, Cain, Yelich, Aguilar. It's going to be interesting to see how playing time shakes out when Thames comes back, don't forget he was hitting extremely well before his injury as well.
