  1. I think that's a pretty reasonable hope for most teams. Have a reasonably paid 5th starter and hope a young prospect forces his way into said rotation spot. Certainly would be nice if ashby or small could be those guys at some point this season.

  3. I don't hate that order for the top 4 on opening day. I don't mind 5th that much either but would like to think someone can out-hit Shaw there.
  4. For sake of reference: RH: Garcia, Cain, Taylor, Reyes, Arcia LH: Yelich, Fisher, McKinney, Ray, Cozens Looks like Reyes has played all over the field, but not very well. He's mainly a corner OF. Cozens is a corner OF. McKinney has some time in center, but looks to be mainly a corner OF/1B. Fisher has played all three OF positions. Unless they plan on bumping Garcia over to CF when Cain gets a day off, they will probably want to keep someone who can play center field. That would be Taylor, Ray (not likely) or Fisher if they believe he could handle CF. Arcia is a wildcard here, because you'd have to think that if he's an outfielder, he's a center fielder. If they use him as the 5th outfielder/utility guy, that would leave a spot open if they want to keep someone like Vogelbach as a bench bat. Even then, Vogelbach might be gone if they decide to go for the versatility of someone like McKinney over the "should be a DH" Vogelbach. My early-in-Spring-Training guess is that they keep Fisher and McKinney. Vogelbach will be gone, and Arcia will add "outfielder" to his list of utility positions with Urias getting the starting SS job. Taylor will lose out due to his having an option, and they'll try to slip Cozens and Reyes through to the minors. Fisher will be the regular "4th outfielder," while McKinney will get some OF time, while also being the LH backup first baseman. Regarding Arcia, I find it a bit weird that he's getting reps at CF. He's really not THAT fast. And he's not going to have instincts in the outfield like a Cain where he can make up for mediocre speed. Also I noted this in a different thread, but there were games where both Garcia and Taylor started last year. CC went with Garcia in CF and Taylor in RF. This kinda tells me that for some reason, CC is more confident in Garcia in CF than Taylor. And if anything, Garcia being in better shape might make him better suited for CF this year. Point being, Brewers could definitely go with a primarily corner OF off the bench versus needing a defense first CF.
  5. I would guess this is a case of they're already comfortable with Taylor in CF, they want to see what Fisher can do there. Kind of like what it sounds like they're going to do with Arcia/Urias at SS this Spring. I thought I remember seeing last year cases where Garcia played cf while Taylor played right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that, but I get a sense that CC doesn't have a ton of confidence in Taylor's defense
  6. https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2021/02/27/lions-quintez-cephus-sues-alma-mater-wisconsin-over-sexual-assault-case/amp/?__twitter_impression=true Cephus is suing over the dismissed sexual assault case. I know this was talked about at length while ongoing in this board.
  7. Maybe if the ball truly is deadened, guys will stop with the hr cuts...especially with 2 strikes. Nothing like watching a guy like Travis shaw try to hit a 1-2 pitch 600 feet. Also, I would think a deadened ball could lead to a lot more texas Leaguers, as bloopers should theoretically not travel as far and be a bit more likely to fall in vs hang up on the air forever until an OF can get there.
  8. I think most are just assuming the worst because it's been proven time and time again that Sinclair is an absolutely horrible company. I have absolutely no faith that anyone who doesn't have a local cable contract will be able to watch the Brewers this year ... and it's probably just a matter of time before Sinclair pulls the station from the Spectrums and AT&Ts of the world too. At some point, you'd think Sinclair is losing money big time if they posture with too high of a rate. If Spectrum and AT&T don't carry it, they have basically zero viewership and make no money off the rights. That doesn't make any business sense. What wouldn't surprise me, if there was some level of collusion between Sinclair and these cable providers. The Brewers are one thing that can keep people from cutting the cord if they only offer the product to cable providers. I'm probably wrong but who knows. It's all just gross.
  9. Agreed, I think this is just something to appease fans. Oh, he's sorta kinda trying to do something. You can't sell your tv rights, especially to a group like Sinclair, and then expect to find a way to get streaming services to work if they are going to force a premium to watch.
  10. Yeah that's not really caused by Sony. That's all the dirtbags with the bots buying them all up and reselling on ebay.
  11. I don't buy the artificial scarcity thing. Less people having PS5 means less people buying ps5 games, ps5 controllers, etc. That's not a smart business strategy. It's also not just playstation but xbox too, so unless you think they are colluding together(not impossible but unlikely)...the simplest explanation(demand is significantly greater than supply in large part due to covid) is probably the correct one here. Regarding PS4, yeah prices are still very high on those likely as you've noted due to ps5 shortage. I was looking on craigslist and seeing similar 250+ prices. I highly suspect in a handful of months the ps5 will be more readily available and more used ps4s will become available.
  12. There's a big $$ difference in starting the clock early on your 18th best prospect than there is on a top 20 prospect in all of baseball.
  13. I'm much more annoyed with them going from 150 to 100 than from 100 to 70. As much as the $2.9 billion number is more or less garbage, I doubt the owners did anything but lose money last year. And with fans in the stands uncertain at best currently, I can understand cutting payroll a bit this year. But, he doesn't really have an excuse to go from 150 to 100 when revenue was exploding. With Mark A, I trust he will go for it and make a big payroll boost if the situation calls for it...he's proven it. The Mariners don't really seem that way at all. So them dropping payroll is more or less just a money grab.
  14. I'm curious, seriously, just curious as to why this term bothers you so much. Is it a political issue. Do you consider cancel culture to be a political term that causes issues in discussion? I wasn't aware that cancel culture was an offensive term, but I figured you were offended by the term when I used it a few weeks ago, and you removed my post. Again, not trying to start anything, just want to understand why the term can't be used... It doesn't bother me. It's political/contentious. He's right, it is political and I shouldn't have brought it up on this board.
  15. He should be fired if the owner of the team decides he should be fired, not because a bunch of loud and salty fans think he should be fired. That said, this is definitely a really bad look and gives kelenic real ammunition for his inevitable grievance in a few years. It's also going to be that much more difficult to bring talent to Seattle. All things equal, I think a player will probably choose to play for a different front office. Seattle will probably have to pay a premium while this guy is around. And there's some stuff in there that's racially insensitive at the very least. I have a much bigger problem with that stuff than his admitting to service time manipulation. I would definitely like to see him face consequences from those comments and learn something from them. Interesting response. You basically defend his comments from loud and salty fans but then make the case more forcefully than I did for him to be fired. There are other possible consequences than getting fired. Some sort of racial sensitivity training for one thing. I agree with plush to a degree regarding the whole cancel culture thing being gross. That said, I would like to see some sort of consequence. Regarding kelenic, I like how this dude speaks about his confidence like it's a bad thing. I'd consider it a huge problem if he wasn't super cocky. Name an mlb star that isn't extremely confident/cocky?
  16. Aside from that, I'm not buying the 2.9 billion number. I think that number is more likely to be lost revenue than a net loss. Like they brought 2.9 billion less through the door than they budgeted they would have brought in under normal conditions. That's pure speculation of course as very few have any idea what the brewers finances look like.

  18. I think Hader might shift back to his role from the 2018-2019 seasons, 2-3 innings at a crack a couple times a week. I think the dream would be Devin Williams picking up where he left off and taking of the closer role so you have Peralta/Hader as multi-inning weapons. Everything else is frankly white noise, those will hopefully be the guys pitching the last 2-3 innings in most of our wins.
  19. Totally different personal circumstances around those contracts. Tatis grew up in a big league household with tons of money. He could gamble and wait for a massive deal. Acuna didn't come from that background and if he got hurt or took a FB to the head and couldn't play again, he's not going to get that payday. It's all about risk of the next contract and Tatis has less risk because of his situation. Umm, the situations aren't 240 million dollars different. It's really not that simple though. Acuna's is definitely more team friendly, but the $100 million only bought out a max of 3 years of free agency if both options are exercised(will be $123 million if both options are exercised). I think we did the exercise earlier that a player could maybe get close to $75 million during team control years if they were a monster every year. So around $17 million per year for the 3 FA years. Yes pretty team friendly, but also worth noting Acuna was 20 years old at the time of signing the contract. Worst case scenario for him, he left around $50 million on the table assuming he could get $35 per instead of $17. He also will have another opportunity at age 30 to hit free agency and get another big contract. If he's good to the point that he was truly underpaid in his late 20s, he'll get plenty of money for his seasons in his 30s.
  20. This deal is extremely player friendly considering the risk. The padres 5 additional years of team control probably run them 80 million IF he's a monster the next 5 years. They bought out those 5 years and then an additional 9/260. The AAV on those free agent years isn't really that far below market. Bryce harper just got 25 per. Arenado got I think 29 per. Yelich got around 30 in new money. Best case scenario aside from a massive shift in additional spending, is he hits free agency and gets a couple extra years of 25-30m per. You'd have a tough time arguing he left more than 100m on the table assuming everything breaks perfectly, and he gets the 340m guarantee. That's a very very easy decision for Fernando.
  21. This. Not this. This is what fans want to believe. Minor edit, this is what fans who know absolutely nothing about business or even the very basics of financial management think...
  22. Has there been any confirmation that Peralta is permanently a bullpen arm and NOT a SP a this point?
  23. My not so hot take on this lineup, Yelich is much more likely to be in the top 5 of MVP voting than he is to have a sub 210 avg again in 2021. I'd go as high as 250 on the average...the talent is there and you know he's working hard to bounce back after last season. I think Yelich will continue to bat 2nd, Cain or Wong probably lead off...my guess is it will be Cain to open the season while he's healthy, and when he inevitably gets nicked up after the first few weeks we may shift to someone else.
  24. Assuming Shaw makes the team, I highly suspect Urias plays against lefties. I'm fine with a platoon there. Both guys play very good defense. If Urias beats out Arcia for everyday SS, then arcia probably plays SS against lefties with Urias at 3b...either way, Shaw probably won't see much LH pitching. I completely agree on Urias having a higher ceiling, and while Shaw might have a similar floor...he is far more likely to have a 700+ ops outcome than urias. I have a hard time believing we'll ever see the hole in his bat that was 2019. Having both guys generally solidifies at least mediocre production with good defense at the position...with some upside.
  25. Minor league deal equals virtually no risk. Obviously a solid move. Would love to see him bounce back. Also like the idea of his defense at 3b.
