  1. Going to the game today and hoping for a good contest. Im apprehensive about Teheran based on his recent starts, but maybe he’ll come up with something special against a former team. Elder has been rocked in his last two starts, and the Braves have lost 6 of their last 9, so maybe the door is open for the Brewers to book another series win. If the Brewers are going to lose today I hope they can do it without using much from the top relievers. I want them fresh for the big series with the Reds and those “two game swing” games. A loss today and two out of three from the Reds would still be a decent homestand.
  2. The Brewers have certainly been more successful at winning games this month, but “potent” isn’t a word I would have thought of because I would usually associate that with offense. They have won 14 of their last 20 games, but they’ve done it in two blocks of games that have been as different as night and day. In the first block of 11 games they won 7 while scoring 67 runs and giving up 56. It looked like the offense might be coming around but the pitching was showing some signs of leakage, especially in that stretch against the Pirates and Cubs. In the last 9 games, starting with the 1-0 win over the Reds the day before the All Star break, they have scored just 29 runs, which is the worst in MLB. But, they have managed to win 7 of those games because they have surrendered just 19 runs against 3 generally prolific hitting teams. It’s kind of a question of what gives first because that rate of run prevention is not sustainable. But, if they can make some improvements on offense while getting Woodruff and Miley back and close to expected effectiveness, the team could be formidable in August and September.
  3. The Diamondbacks are slumping/fading pretty badly. They have lost 11 of their last 15 and gone from a 3 game lead in the division to 4 games behind.
  4. From one standpoint, yes. But those one run wins against the Reds are in the running and more valuable.
  5. Didn’t want to see Acuna this inning.
  6. I wouldn’t get too excited about Frelick. It won’t take long before the hitting coaches convince him he needs to improve his launch angle.
  7. Not picking on this specific situation, but just commenting on one of my pet peeves. You often hear “he just made one mistake” or “two bad pitches” with the implication that pitches that are hit are mistakes and mistakes are hit. Neither part of that equation is true. You’re right, the pitch Riley hit was not a bad pitch in a bad spot and he went down and got it. But Houser might have gotten away with some bad pitches too. As an example, the pitch Yelich fouled off just before his long fly out was a big mistake. A high pitch on the outside part of the plate that Yelich would often drive to left or left center, possibly out of the park. He was right on it but fouled it off.
  8. You couldn’t write a script like that. Just the fact that Frelick had two CHANCES like that in one inning is pretty bizarre.
  9. Their pitching has been pretty solid for the last few weeks (the 11-10 game against the Giants being an exception). . Their losing streak was caused mainly by a hitting slump.
  10. Looking like the Brewers will need a win tonight to match the Reds, who just jumped to the lead over the DBacks with 3 straight HR.
  11. Your recollection is correct. Counsell has said and done this several times. But tonight might be different if they’re looking to get another left handed bat in the lineup. Especially with a AAA pitcher on the mound to start. He might be lifted early if the Braves bring in a lefty.
  12. Reds get to play the DBacks without facing either Gallen or Kelly.
  13. Who scheduled these guys? Or are they buy games?
  14. 😬 The infielders better be accurate with their throws.
  15. Fortunately it’s only 6 against the Braves with an off day on Thursday.
  16. I don’t follow minor leaguers anywhere near enough to have any specific informed opinion about Tyler Black. But, based on past experience with can’t miss “he’s hit everywhere he’s played” prospects, I am skeptical that taking someone who hasn’t even played at AAA and throwing him into the Brewers lineup in the middle of a playoff race is going to yield immediate dividends. I would love to see Black (or anyone) come up and be the exception to what seems to be the norm. But I’m not holding my breath. If he is that good maybe he can be used in a trade to acquire someone with an established MLB track record who might be more likely to provide immediate benefits. I am willing to accept the risk that it wouldn’t be “mortgaging the future” any more than trading away Matt LaPorta or Lewis Brinson.
  17. The Reds being hot was not a line, it was a fact. Coming into the series at AFF they had won 19 of 23. That is hot by any definition.
  18. Who’s the “hottest” team can depend on where you decide to start counting. The Brewers 20-9 record since that losing streak is second to the Braves 20-7, and several other NL teams are close: Phillies 18-10 Giants 18-11 Dodgers 17-10 Reds 18-11 Cardinals 16-11 The most impressive part of this is the Brewers going 7-2 against the Reds and Phillies, 2 teams that have been hot. The next 9 will be no picnic either.
  19. Then you could say that about every pitcher on the staff. It’s not a matter of trusting him so much as the danger of the 3 hitter rule. If a guy comes in and walks two guys without coming close to a strike you’re stuck leaving him in for another batter. A lot of managers would bring in their closer with a 4 run lead against the heart of the order of a good hitting team. But I know why Counsell didn’t want to do that today given how much Williams, Payamps, and Peguero have been used because the offense hasn’t been able to build more comfortable leads. I wasn’t questioning the move, but I was nervous about it, and the leadoff walk on a non competitive ball 4 didn’t help.
  20. I think the theory behind it is that the defense should have possession of the ball to get a putout.
  21. Wasn’t necessarily suggesting anyone else. It’s just that you have to be a little concerned about him, being wild, trying to protect the lead.
