Saying that everyone is underperforming or blowing up simultaneously is a gross exaggeration.
First, despite last night’s game, the team’s biggest problem is the offense, which has not really had an excessive number of impactful injuries. The big underperformers there are Adames and Tellez, but pretty much everyone else is doing about what should have been expected considering inexperience or injuries from previous seasons (see Winker).
I don’t believe that a lot more at bats from Urias, Mitchell, or Frelick would have made a significant difference. Urias’ injury likely opened up more ABs for Miller, who has been one of the team’s best hitters. I seem to recall some posters saying before he was hurt that Mitchell should be sent down because of his high strikeout rate. And who knows what Frelick will do in his first shot in the big leagues.
The risk that this offense would be bad was pretty high, and I don’t think Counsell is to blame for that. Blame the hitting coaches if you want, but they haven’t been given a lot to work with.
