    They’re talking about this now and saying Peralta will just miss one start and Levering is saying that for the Brewers that would be a big deal. But all they would have to do is have him start a game, then drop the appeal and have him start 6 games later.

    Ramirez of the Mets got 3 games for throwing behind Hoskins, but he’s a RP. I think 5 games is pretty much a minimum for a starter.

    My reaction to these: Murphy: Silly, but how much difference does it really make. Peralta: can appeal for a reduction, but as a practical matter with the Brewers 6 day rotation all that might do is delay a start one day. Uribe: Can appeal and get a reduction, but he deserves at least a few days.

    I’ve got to remember to start playing these again. I enjoy doing them while I have games on TV. I can get a lot of obscure ones from the original 16 franchises by remembering players from my old baseball cards. I have a lot more trouble with the newer franchises. It sounds like Jim French and I have similar strengths and weaknesses. Update: did today’s and my 50’s baseball card knowledge helped me get the Tigers-White Sox block at 0.3%. I thought it was pretty easy to get 9/9 on this one. I don’t really shoot for rarity so I took some of the low hanging fruit, like in the Cardinals-Tigers block where I just watched the one I chose yesterday.

    I just caught out of the corner of my eye Aaron Judge waving his big mitt in front of an Oriole turning a DP. He missed the ball this time. I turned up the sound and Jim Palmer was talking about it. I’ll have to dig that up when the game shows up on the MLB TV archive.

    He did slightly tweak his ankle on the bag, but I think it’s the hamstring that’s going to be the problem. He was already hobbling on his last step before he hit the bag.

    I don’t hate Bauers and I wouldn’t release him. I hate that they don’t have anyone better to bat cleanup against RHP. It isn’t his fault that they don’t.

    I’ve just learned over the years to temper my expectations. I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve heard people get excited about a prospect or minor leaguer and how he should be up instead of someone currently on the team. But for every Ryan Braun there are many Randy Readys who have done nothing but hit at every level (until they get to the majors). At least in Black’s case there is enough dead weight on the current roster that the bar to make an improvement is pretty low.

    I’m always interested to see if a prospect that comes up will be the rare one that makes a significant impact.

    There have been a lot of comments about how the catcher moved forward and into Bauers’ swing path. While that is irrelevant according to the comment to the rule as written, I’m not sure it is even factually accurate. I looked at the play again, and in the side view you can really see how exaggerated Bauers’ follow through was as he let go of the bat with one hand. The catcher had to slide to his right to block the pitch, but it doesn’t look like he moved forward much as the umpire is still right behind him. He really falls forward after he gets hit in the head.

    He also said, correctly, that he doesn’t know everything. He was dead wrong in saying the umpire made the wrong call because he does not know about the comment in the rule (quoted in a post above) that specifically addresses this situation. If you want, you can complain that the comment should have an exception for a situation in which the ball gets past the catcher before the batter hits him with the bat. But, where would you draw the line on that? In this case the ball squirted behind the catcher and whether or not the runner on third could score would depend on how well the runner recognized where the ball was, how fast he is, how quickly the catcher recovers the ball, and whether the pitcher comes in to cover the plate.

    I think the relevant rule is 6.01 (a) (1) which says that is interference by a batter or runner when: “After a third strike that is not caught by the catcher, the batter-runner clearly hinders the catcher in his attempt to field the ball. Such batter-runner is out, the ball is dead, and all other runners return to the bases they occupied at the time of the pitch.” This rule specifically addresses the fact that the catcher did not catch the pitch, so the attempt to “feel the ball“ can only refer to his attempt to retrieve the ball that he didn’t catch.

    That’s quite a stretch to think the catcher thought “Oops, that ball got by me I think I’ll dive forward and hope I get hit in the head with the bat”. If he doesn’t go after the ball quickly two runs would score.

    Despite his blind squirrel moment yesterday I hate having Bauers in the cleanup spot. To me it’s a sure sign of a weak offense.

    I don’t have a current rule book but I’m sure it’s a situation where interference creates a dead ball with runners returning to their bases. And it’s hard to argue that a batter clocking the catcher in the head isn’t interference. It really stinks in the situation because the interference didn’t cause the catcher to let the pitch get by him.
