  1. Not unless Woodruff can strike out 11 more in 3 innings.
  2. Every team has to hope to be playing well at the right time, but the Brewers would really need for every piece to be clicking just right a lot more than the Dodgers, Braves, and Mets would. The Dodgers might just have one World Series title this decade. But they have a few other NLCS and World Series appearances too. And they aren’t the only big spenders.
  3. I have some numbers to back this up, and at some point I will pull them together and present them. But the short version is: Because the NL Central has 3 of the 5 worst teams in the NL in terms of both record and runs allowed, the Brewers have had significantly more games against these 5 generous teams than anyone else (including the Cardinals who have more of their games against these teams still on the schedule) So, the Brewers have had more opportunities to face the league’s worst pitching staffs, and that pads their run totals relative to other playoff contenders. On top of that, the last time I looked at this, which was just a few days ago, the Brewers were averaging about 2 runs per game more against that group of 5 worst teams than they were against everyone else. That difference is significantly greater than any of the other contenders except for the Mets, who just score more than the Brewers in general and have had better pitching too. So, at least IMHO, the perception that the Brewers offense is worse relative to the rest of the league than indicated by the raw R/G numbers is valid. The fact that the pitching has not been elite just makes things worse. Last night’s game is a prime example. Last year, and even earlier this year, the Brewers might have won that game 1-0. Peralta goes 6, Boxberger, Williams, and Hader each pitch a shutout inning, and it’s a win. There have been a lot of games like that lost in the last few weeks because the offense isn’t putting up enough runs and the pitching is less reliable than last year.
  4. As I said above, Hiura was pulled for defense after the 9th. He wasn’t pinch hit for.
  5. Remember when the theory was that the Brewers could be dangerous in the playoffs because of elite starting pitching and a lockdown bullpen? With a horrendous offense and a bullpen that is in shambles, that formula doesn’t look very good. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be tested anyway.
  6. He was already pulled. The Brewers are simply an extremely mediocre team.
  7. It ends up not making a difference, but it looked to me like that wild pitch clipped Tellez in the elbow.
  8. This is what setting the table gets for the Brewers. It’s home run or nothing. Now will we see the Cubs force Williams to throw another 40 pitches?
  9. People talk like guys who have never played in the majors, and in some cases haven’t been in AAA that long, are going to come up and immediately replicate their minor league numbers. I’m not saying not to bring someone up, but expectations for them should be tempered.
  10. Set the table for what? They had the table set several times today and did nothing with it.
  11. This offense has so many holes that it’s hard to believe that guys who have never played in the majors would turn this around.
  12. The error comes back to bite right away. Brewers can’t take advantage of mistakes and the Cubs can. Sign of a losing team.
  13. Perfect example of Brewers futility. Cubs open the door with a bonehead play and the Brewers respond with 2 Ks.
  14. Bryce Harper is back for the Phillies and he delivered a 2 run single in his first AB as the Phils jump on the Pirates.
  15. I’m looking at 12-6 as a minimum to show that the team can make a run at a playoff spot. That would involve winning all 4 of the 3 game series and 4 of the other 6. Actually, 8-4 in the four 3 game series would be nothing special considering 3 of them are at home. At some point they have to sweep a series or two against these non contending teams. The Cardinals and Phillies have been doing that pretty regularly over the last few weeks. And counting on the Padres to keep losing is pretty dangerous.
  16. Glad to see that the Brewers padded their offensive totals with some meaningless runs in a lost game, including two against a position player.
  17. As the Braves complete their series sweep over the Pirates with a 14-2 win, it just makes me sick to think of how the Brewers have lost 7 of their last 10 to that team considering their overall record over the last few months. Yes, I know that the Pirates won 5 of 6 over the Dodgers early in the year, but a team that’s cruising to over 100 wins and the number one seed in the playoffs can afford to tank a few games and series. A team that was always going to be in a tight race to win the division or get a playoff spot has a lot less margin for error. To put this in perspective, after the Pirates completed their sweep over the Dodgers on June 1, their record was a semi respectable 22-27, and they went to 24-28 by winning their next series over the DBacks. Since then they have gone 23-49 and have won only 3 series (2 over the Brewers and one over the Cubs, who have beaten the Brewers in 6 of the last 8 meetings). So, after June 1, the Pirates are 7-3 against the Brewers and 16-46 against everyone else. That 5-13 record for the Brewers against the Cubs and Pirates since June 1 is really going to stand out if they miss the playoffs by a game or two. Unless they can mitigate some of this damage by taking 5 or 6 when they face these teams at AFF after leaving LA, things are going to look pretty bleak. At this point “just win series” might not be good enough unless they literally win every one or throw in a few sweeps.
  18. Basically a bullpen game with Houser “opening” in this game instead of making another rehab start in Nashville. The Brewers socked 3 HRs against Heaney last week. If they can do that again maybe they can get to the 6th inning in a tight game and pull it out.
  19. The Padres struggling is starting to look like the Brewers only chance to slip into the final playoff spot. Have to hope that their offense doesn’t start to produce the way everyone expected after they got Soto, Bell, and Drury to help out Machado. The Phillies schedule is almost as soft as the Cardinals’ and they have been scoring a lot of runs and piling up wins against the weak teams. Harper hit 2 HRs in a rehab start tonight and should be rejoining them soon.
  20. He isn’t helping it tonight, but he had only pitched 14 innings against the Dodgers coming into tonight. There was the start last week where he gave up 3 runs in the sixth after 5 scoreless innings. Last year he only faced them in a tune up start the last weekend and he gave up 3 runs in 2 innings, and in 2019 he gave up 5 runs in a start when he was pretty much getting pounded by everyone. So, his performance against the Dodgers has been very poor, but in a small number of appearances.
  21. Don’t have to worry about staying up late tonight.
  22. I was under the impression that they were expecting Peterson to be back with the Brewers on Friday if his rehab goes OK. With the off day Thursday this move only affects two games.
  23. Fair enough, I was just focusing on the ABs against RHP. Still, those 1000 total ABs aren’t enough for me to declare Hiura a greater hitter against RHP than Molitor, Yount, Braun, et al The analysis of Hiura is complicated because he was very successful (especially against RHP) in 2019, but quite bad against everyone in 2020, 2021, and the first part of 2022. When making lineup decisions in 2022 the more recent performance is going to get more weight for someone with that short a career. He was given plenty of chances and failed to produce except for a few blips. Now I’m all in favor of giving him another chance to show this isn’t a blip.
  24. His limited time there doesn’t give us much to go on but putting him there over Tellez against RHP doesn’t gain you much, if anything, anyway unless you believe that he can hit at the same rate in 400 or so ABs as he has in the 75 or so he’s had this year. If managers made decisions based on 100 ABs or less Hurricane Bob Hazle would have played over Hank Aaron in 1957.
