  1. Going with the Sunday lineup on Friday night. Corbin has really struggled and the Brewers offense has generally been docile the last 4 games and against LH starters in general. Could be a case of the resistible force vs the moveable object. In Corbin’s last 6 starts he has given up 30 runs in 33 IP. Brewers could use a game that doesn’t require nearly perfect pitching. How about some early runs followed by some add ons. It’s been a good week so far; no time for a “Royal” letdown. The Nats have had a rough month, but they are coming off of outslugging the Blue Jays the last two days.
  2. I had seen Corbin listed as the starter tonight. I wonder if he’s been scratched.
  3. When they submit their lineup card. I’m not sure if that’s exactly right. I thought there was some league protocol adopted a couple of years ago that requires a lineup to be submitted to the league office and then released to the public. It was done mainly to try to prevent someone from getting inside information to use for gambling purposes.
  4. I know they have to D who is pitching before they can A who it is.
  5. Setting up as another short start for Woodruff. Not what the team needed tonight.
  6. I’m glad the Brewers put Peralta on the IL. They can use another arm in the bullpen tonight and, if Peralta’s injury is that minor, he’ll only miss one start. I expect him to be held out loner than 10 days, but if he can be back by early September that would be a relief.
  7. Like many of the mediocre lefty starters the Brewers have faced this year, they didn’t do much against Lester when they faced him in DC in May. But, they did take advantage of his successors to win that 7 inning game. The offense has struggled to score the last 3 days, but the pitching has carried the team to wins. Tonight would be a good night for the offense to carry the load.
  8. Hopefully Woodruff can go deep in the game tonight to give the bullpen a break. Even better, score enough runs to avoid any need to use Williams or Hader again. I suspect Williams might be out tonight, and maybe Hader too. Turning 3 games in 4 days into 4 games in 5 isn’t ideal. I wonder if Peralta will be going on the IL and another reliever will be coming in to cover some innings if needed.
  9. Me too. Just win as many as possible and take what you get.
  10. I have a friend that I exchange messages with regularly who is a Reds fan, and I think his feelings are pretty typical of the fan base. At the All Star break after the Reds won 6 of 7 from the Brewers at AFF, they were feeling pretty good about their chances in the division. Those hopes had some cold water thrown on them after the Brewers sweep at GAB, and they were frustrated as the Reds couldn’t gain ground even while having a good month. But, that frustration has been eased by the fact that the Padres collapse has put them squarely in the wild card race. I sent him a message on Sunday saying that, as the Brewers played the Cardinals, Reds fans would have to decide whether they wanted help in the division race or the wild card race. His response was “I’ll take both”. I haven’t contacted him this week; I’m sure the two losses to the Cubs were pretty demoralizing to all Reds fans. Winker is on the IL, Castellanos has not been hitting well since his return from the IL, and Votto’s outrageous hot streak may be waning. Without scoring a lot of runs the Reds have problems.
  11. So, I went into this game thinking that even if the Brewers lost tonight they would have two days off the schedule gaining a game on the Reds and holding even with the Cardinals, so a net gain. I may have to reevaluate that.
  12. Let’s get some runs tonight. Can’t count on going to Boxberger, Williams, and Hader again. I even wonder if all of them are available to go for the third time in 4 days, especially Williams who they seem to be extra cautious about.
  13. The Reds put up almost no counterattack all day and went down meekly 7-1. Cubs first back to back wins since July.
  14. On the subject of the Padres and their wild card hopes, they are so desperate for starting pitchers that they signed Jake Arrietta, and he’s starting this afternoon. ETA: Arrietta held the Rockies to 3 in the first inning.
  15. That run was amazing and does show what can happen in a month. But, I wouldn’t go all the way to saying that the last few games didn’t matter. With two more wins they could have tied the Cardinals and forced another Game 163.
  16. Now 5-0. It will be fun to watch to see if the Cubs patchwork pitching staff can hold on to a 5 run handicap against the Reds offense. Or if the Cubs offense can add on runs against the Reds bullpen, which is going to be called in early. 5-1 at the end of 2.
  17. Expecting to to see the same lineup as last night with maybe JBJ for Cain if they think he needs a day off and want to give it to him today instead of against Lester tomorrow.
  18. Then he should also work on making sure not to look at, think about, or flinch in the direction of second base after a fielder throws his perfectly placed bunt past first.
  19. You can get there a lot faster without looking at number of games remaining. For example, if you want to calculate the Brewers magic number to eliminate the Reds it’s: 163 minus (Brewers wins plus Reds losses) Today that is 163- (73+56)= 163-129=34
  20. Regarding the bolded part: In last night's game, they said that Lester had been named the starter for Thursday. Yes, shortly after I posted that, the Cardinals announced that Mikolas would make his return on Friday and Lester would start Thursday. As the Padres continue to slide, the race for the second wild card spot is getting much more interesting. Fangraphs now shows the Padres chances of claiming that spot at less than 50% and, given some of their recent injuries, the playoff projection sites might be overstating their chances. If you gave me a 50-50 bet right now I would bet on the Reds to finish with a better record than the Padres.
  21. They had a chance to blow the game open in the 4th but left the bases loaded. Loaded with 1 out and Yelich was called out on strikes. Also had a runner thrown out at the plate and left the bases loaded in the first.
