  1. Is the runner on second in extra innings rule going to be part of the postseason this year? I thought that was just a regular season thing.
  2. Nice moment for Shaw. It was the 10th inning of a tie game and an error and an intentional walk loaded the bases with nobody out. It wasn’t Shaw’s first game for the Sox. He appeared in 2 previous games and had 3 PA’s.
  3. I saw a discussion the other day about Joey Votto as a HOF candidate, and was surprised that the writers involved thought unanimously that he should be in. By my totally subjective standards Votto is a very good player who, unless he has a few more really good years, is not HOF worthy.
  4. You can and they probably will maximize how much they all pitch. The good news is for this to even really be a problem they would have to start making it pretty deep into the postseason. There are also so many off days in the postseason and the big three are fairly interchangeable when a new series starts you wouldn't feel obligated for like Burnes has to suddenly be pushed to the front of the line on 4 days rest. Though maybe they will opt to maximize Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta, in that order. The Brewers aren't going to toss Brett Anderson out there over Burnes, because Burnes needs a 5th day of rest. When I say every fourth day, that’s 3 days of rest, which none of the Brewers starters has done this season. In a 5 game division series there would usually only be one off day between the second and third games and one between a fourth and fifth games. So, start the top 3 in some order in the first 3 games and go from there. If you get to a fourth game, the choices would be a fourth starter, the first game starter on 3 days rest, or a full fledged bullpen game. Depending on how much the bullpen had to be used in the first 3 games, and whether you are ahead or behind 2-1, I think a manager would at least want the option of a fourth starter. Which is why I think you have to have four starters on the roster.
  5. You have to plan on four starters. The Brewers starters have been pitching on four and five days rest all season and I don’t think you want to suddenly start using them every fourth day. Maybe you consider moving someone up if you’re facing an elimination game, but the plan should be four starters with a short hook if someone struggles early.
  6. The Padres, Mets, and Red Sox have all had pretty horrific free falls over the last 4-6 weeks. The Mets have gone from a 4 game lead to 7 games back in the division race in just 22 days.
  7. Winker is on the IL so the Reds will be missing one of their big guns too. Moustakas seems to have taken over at third replacing Suarez.
  8. The good news is that with the off day tomorrow pretty much everyone should be available on Tuesday. But it would be helpful if Burnes and/or Woodruff can go at least 6 innings this week. The Reds series starts a stretch of 16 games in 16 days and it will be hard to get through that using 5 or 6 pitchers every game.
  9. Hader enters as another game approaches the 4 hour mark. At least he only has to get one out today, but like yesterday I don’t like the looming prospect of facing Josh Bell as the tying run. It shouldn’t happen when you enter the ninth with 5 and 6 run leads.
  10. Time to get someone warmed up. The Nats will be coming around to the top of their order soon.
  11. Hopefully it’s a cramp, but that could be a calf injury for Escobar.
  12. With 22 games against the Pirates, Cubs, and Marlins, the Reds could easily go better than 26-17 if they can beat the Cubs and Pirates at close to the same rate the Brewers beat them and add 4 or 5 wins against the Marlins. 16-6 in those 22 isn’t hard to see at all. Just a reminder the Marlins are a far better team than the Cubs or Pirates. A lot of 1run losses give them their poor record, but basically the are near a .500 team quality. Trevor Rogers is currently sitting on Bereavement but that hopefully ends in time for him to pitch vs the Reds. The 2nd series vs Miami comes immediately after the last series vs the Brewers at Miami. Which has its abilities for long nights out in town and poor games played. This leads to immediately playing the Cardinals at home flying back from Miami. That point right there after the Cardinal series will be the tell all whether to be concerned of the Reds or not. They could easily find themselves at a 5-8 or 6-7 stretch after and be much further out of it or completely right in it if the opposite. The final stretch beyond that is cake for them. The Reds may also be dealing with an IL stint to Jesse Winker that would cause him to miss the Brewers series. The Marlins may be better than the Cubs and Pirates, but they weren’t good enough to win a game against the Reds or to lose by 1 run.
  13. You must be mistaken. When I mentioned a few weeks ago that the Brewers had trouble against lefty starters I was told that I didn’t know what I was talking about.
  14. They’ve been very good at beating the Brewers at AFF too. Haudricourt had an article today about how much better the Brewers have hit on the road this season, and the games against the Reds games have been an extreme example. In the 9 games at GAB the Brewers have outscored the Reds 58-36 while winning 7 of the 9. In the 7 games at AFF, the Reds have outscored the Brewers 26-13, while winning 6 of the 7. In the 6 losses the Brewers have scored a total of 8 runs. So, the Reds have scored about 4 runs per game against the Brewers, both home and away, but the Brewers have scored over 6 per game at GAB and less than 2 per game at AFF against the Reds. That has to change this week.
  15. Then a gift run to counter all of the hard hit balls the Brewers have had.
  16. He’s getting more efficient. We could save even more time by just giving them a runner and dispensing with the pitches.
  17. Disappointing end to what was looking like a budding big inning with the heart of the order up.
  18. If this is first half of 2018 Yelich, I’m all in. While it would be nice, we don’t really need All World Yelich.
  19. Good stuff. I was there that day and it was pretty exciting.
