  1. Ugh. Hate to see a walk in front of Belt, who’s accounted for about half of the Giants runs against the Brewers this season.
  2. This really has the feel of a getaway game. Get up there, take your cuts, sit down, and get to the airport. 2 innings in 25 minutes.
  3. I just switched it on my phone with the three dots on top. Watching the game and listening to the Brewers radio broadcast now. Synced up nice too. Now I have to figure out how to get the picture from the phone on to my TV. I don’t want to watch on my phone. OK, I got it.
  4. They said something about an option to use a radio feed for audio. Do you need a You Tube subscription to do that? These announcers are hard to listen to.
  5. Yeah, I think Suter would be available in the middle innings today if the game is in reach and Williams could serve as closer if a save situation presents itself in the ninth. Hope Lauer can go at least 5, even if he gives up 4 or 5 runs.
  6. Makes sense. Get a “”take one for the team” RHP to take over if Lauer gets into early trouble. Use Ashby in Anderson’s spot next Tuesday, and then they should be in good shape with 5 games in DH cities and 3 off days in the 8 days after the Phillies series.
  7. Peralta, Houser, and Burnes have been announced as the starters for the Cardinals series, so they are apparently staying with the 6 man rotation until the off day next Thursday. Anderson’s turn would be up Tuesday, and if he can’t go then they could put Ashby in there. If they want to start guys on 4 days rest they could skip Anderson’s apot and put Lauer in on Tuesday followed by Peralta. But I’m not sure they want to throw Peralta out there on 4 days rest that soon after his IL stint.
  8. With the three wins in the series in the bank and the bullpen stressed, I expect to see a classic getaway day lineup today. Bradley, Vogelbach, Maile, and Reyes are all candidates for a start. Maybe they want to give Adames a day off to give his quad a rest, and Yelich and/or Cain could use a break.Peterson can fill any opening created. I assume Wong will play if he hasn’t been called out on paternity leave yet.
  9. Yes, the Dodgers win puts them a half game up on the Giants. The Giants 5 game division lead on August 13 disappeared in less than 3 weeks.
  10. In the contest for biggest positive hitting surprise of this season my two leading candidates would be Peterson, and Urias’ home run power. Any other nominees? I put those ahead of Garcia and Narvaez because those guys have done things in the majors before.
  11. You're moving the goal posts with the Counsel qualifier but either way, just because he hasn't done it before doesn't mean he can't or won't do it now if needed. I thought it was pretty clear in context that “they” referred to Counsell and the Brewers staff. But, if anyone can give an example of Counsell or any manager in recent memory bringing in the next day’s scheduled starter in relief in the third inning I would be surprised. All that does is mess up the rotation for the next few days. Regardless, if somebody asks Counsell after the game tonight if he considered bringing in Lauer in the third inning, I would bet the answer would be a quick “no”. Sometimes the next day’s starter isn’t even in the park as they stay back to rest, and that might be especially true if the next day’s game is in the afternoon.
  12. If a pitcher has been prepping to start tomorrow they aren’t going to suddenly rush him in to pitch tonight. The starters have routines they go through to get prepared to start, including throwing in between starts. No point messing that up to chase after this game. A couple of the back end relievers are going to have to step up. But it has happened when "tomorrow's" starter came in relief to pitch in a situation such as injury. So that statement isn't true. When was the last time Counsell did it? I would be extremely surprised if he did it tonight.
  13. If a pitcher has been prepping to start tomorrow they aren’t going to suddenly rush him in to pitch tonight. 14. Milner plus their 6th starter since Peralta will be activated on Friday. But they are planning to start Lauer tomorrow and Houser on Saturday around Peralta’s start on Friday so they won’t be used in relief either. They’re just going to have to get some innings out of Norris, Milner, and/or Topa and if they give up runs and the offense can’t add on, just write it off.
  15. I just don’t think that’s prudent, even if it’s possible. In my younger days I remember taking a knee to my thigh playing basketball and I could play for awhile, but eventually it got so stiff I couldn’t continue. I can’t imagine a guy taking a shot like that to a pitching shoulder being able to pitch much longer, and he’d be risking a different injury if he tried. BTW, the guy whose knee hit me had a long career in the NFL as a defensive back. He was a freshman in college at the time.
  16. Felt like it could have been bigger but I’ll take 2 runs and running the pitch count up near 40 When the pitcher comes up in a key spot in an inning that significantly lowers my expectations.
  17. Just take him out. At best he has a bruise on his pitching shoulder and trying to throw through that doesn’t seem like a good idea, especially as it inevitably stiffens.
  18. Gausman’s biggest problems came in his first couple of starts after the ASB but he’s been better in his 5 August starts (ERA 3.16, WHIP 1.29) He hasn’t been as dominant or been working as deep into games as he was earlier in the year.
  19. Sure, but I mean Burnes/Woodruff shutting down their offense does count for something. Sure, but the only one of the 5 games that matched up one of the Brewers top 3 against one of the Giants top 3 was the first game at AFF (Burnes vs Webb) and that one was 1-1 after 9 innings. If the teams meet in the playoffs with everyone healthy I would expect games like that with runs hard to come by on both sides. There won’t be any games matching Woodruff against the Giants bullpen, and even those games were tight (2-2 after 9 innings and 3-1).
