  1. Instead of focusing on Gennett vs Villar (where everyone would have chosen Villar in the spring of 2017), I like to focus on Gennett vs Aguilar. When setting the roster in 2017 they weren’t going to keep two players who could only play one position, and they chose Aguilar over Gennett. I assume they tried to trade Gennett but had no takers and released him instead of paying him $2 million to play in the minors. Even the Reds didn’t expect what Gennett has done. It took a month or so for them to work Gennett into their everyday lineup.
  2. Choi will have a nice memory to take with him when he goes back to AAA tomorrow when they need a spot for Woodruff or later this week when Thames comes back.
  3. Yes, I would. We want to keep him fresh (mission accomplished). Hopefully our stellar pen can get the final 9 outs so we can use him tomorrow if needed. I hope they don’t use Hader tomorrow because I want him available Monday in case they have a chance for a win against the Cubs.
  4. I think the Cardinals have had more damaging injuries, especially with pitchers, than the Brewers have, and as they get guys like Reyes and Martinez into the regular rotation they will be tough. Like the Cubs, they will have several starters better than anyone the Brewers have, including some who are capable of going through a lineup more than twice. Maybe, we still have the better offense, pen and probably defense as well. Not sure how you can say the Brewers have a better offense when the Cardinals are scoring about the same number of runs in a significantly less hitter friendly park.

  6. The Brewers did have the best 50 game record in franchise history. Do you know the final record of the team that held the previous record? Given the experiences of 2007, 2009, 2014, and 2017, it’s hard to blame Brewers fans for being somewhere between cautious and skeptical about good starts.
  7. I think last year’s history is relevant. After being one of the top scoring teams in the NL the first half of the season, the Brewers were dead last in runs per game after the All Star break. The addition of Cain and Yelich should help the offense, but they are definitely showing the signs of being very similar with all of the shutouts and other low scoring games. The bullpen has to be perfect to carry below average offense and starting pitching, and it’s hard to count on that for a whole season. All of the top relievers have shown in the last week that they are human. It’s going to be really hard for the Brewers to keep pace with teams like the Cubs and Cardinals that have vastly superior starting pitchers and better offenses.
  8. The formula of scratching across a couple of runs and counting on the bullpen to be perfect for 4 innings isnt going to work all season. The offense had a good little run in May, but the last 5 games have been a return to the old story of home run or nothing, and that isn’t going to cut it.
  9. DFA Drake, then when Logan comes back, send Suter to AAA to keep him stretched out. What did surprise me was Suter's notching the LOWEST exit velocity of any major-league starter. He's been unlucky, not bad. As they say, “the slower they come in, the slower they go out.”
  10. You mean the offense that managed just 8 runs (4 in garbage time in a blowout loss and 4 on Thames HRs) in a 3 game series against the Reds at Miller Park? The Brewers might win a game or two, but I wouldn’t hold my breath until they start hitting the cover off the ball.
  11. I think I heard that the Cubs will have Arrieta on a 75-80 pitch limit. It would be nice if the Brewers could get to him and get him out early. I suspect we’ll be seeing Justin Wilson somewhere in the middle innings to face the Brewers lefty heavy lineup. That's the part where aguilar, broxton, etc ph... We have a ridiculous amount of bench options But Counsell has to be careful about emptying his bench to go lefty-righty too soon and too often. He got stuck on that last night when he ended up with a lot of lefties against the Pirates left handed relievers. If he makes too many changes in the middle of the game he could get stuck with most of the lefties out when Edwards and Davis are in to finish. Broxton is in one of his Equal Opportunity Strikeout Machine streaks. He’s 8 for his last 48 with 20 Ks, so not a great option off the bench. Same with Bandy and Susac.

  13. This is the Brewers second half. Get guys on and then K, K, K. I generally hate the pressing excuse as to why guys aren't driving runners in but it's pretty obvious Braun, Shaw, and to a lesser extent Santana are. Both Braun and Shaw go up there swinging at anything close to the plate nowadays, very out of character. Okay at the same time, the pitching from the Brewers has been out of this world. It goes without saying that if the Brewers were also scoring at will, they'd be one of the top 3 teams in baseball. Obviously we'd all like to see that but it's simply not realistic to expect that or achieve it. Scoring at will is unrealistic, but if they could be scoring at something like the pace they did in the first half (instead of being the second lowest scoring team in the NL since the break) their position would be a lot better.
  14. I agree with this, and I said so at the time. I don't care if Swarzak thinks he can pitch. He pitched two high stress innings on Tuesday and one on Monday. I'm not sure if he's going to be as effective as usual, and I don't want him completely spent for at least the first game of the Cubs series. And, I would only have used Knebel in a 9th inning save situation. After bringing him in in the 8th, which I wouldn't have done in the first place, I definitely wouldn't have used him in the 9th with the score tied. Guys like Torres and Drake have been on the major league roster all year and their going to have to get big outs sometime if you are playing 10 must win games in 10 days with only 3 starting pitchers (including one rookie) and a sputtering offense. I would rather take my chances getting one inning against the Pirates offense than a couple against the Cubs. Tonight's game and the rest of the Cubs series will determine how I remember last night's game. If the Cubs come out and blast the Brewers like they did in the infamous 2008 massacre, that game will just be a footnote. But, if they blow a late lead tonight because Swarzak and Knebel are unavailable or pitching on fumes, it will reinforce my opinion that Counsell took a bad risk last night.
  15. Part of the problem with Braun for those who have watched him nearly every day for his whole career is that he just doesn't look good. He very rarely pulls the ball with authority and he seems to be making more bad swings than usual. At times he seems to be guessing at pitches, possibly trying to compensate for not being able to get around as quickly. Who knows if it's the thumb, the muscle problem, aging, or the effects of not taking PED's. If I didn't see the numbers, but just watched his AB's, I would not think he was producing as well as he is. He's just such a good natural hitter that he still squeezes out a lot of hits even when he isn't in a good groove. When he is struggling for a week, he seems to go 6 or 7 for 25 when a lot of other guys would be 1 or 2 for 25.
  16. Unless I missed it, I can't believe the announcers didn't say anything about that throw hitting Iorg in the head.
  17. 3 errors hand the Brewers a run, but Volquez looks like he's going to be tough today. Garza better be on because runs are going to be hard for the Brewers to come by.
  18. Braun is hurt, offense is struggling, bullpen is wearing out, and the Brewers are due for a correction. 10-18. That would leave them at 30-26, which would be better than most people expected at the start of the season.
  19. I think Gindl coming up today tells us that Braun will be going on the DL tomorrow when Schafer comes back. If Braun isn't close to playing after a week, might as well give him another week.
  20. Unfortunately, they don't get the day off tomorrow unless it rains. That's why it is so bad that they are going to have to get so many innings out of the overworked bullpen today. I was hoping that they could get through today using just Garza and Wang, but now they're going to have to waste two other guys to cover the 7th and 8th. Duke could be valuable in Cincy to face Votto and Bruce, but now he's going to have to pitch today.
  21. I don't hate Wang, but if the Brewers really think they are playoff contenders they can't afford to keep him on the roster. They also have to consider a move in the next day or two to shore up the roster for the Reds series. DFAing Weeks would be a start and, unfortunately, I think they're going to have to bite the bullet and put Braun on the DL. They need to get Wooten or Figaro up tomorrow to cover for the guys who are going to have to mop up today.
  22. I was literally yelling at my TV when I saw Henderson out there. Getting Henderson's velocity and confidence back is more important than getting Wang his MLB debut. I don't think they want that debut to be in the late innings of a game with a lead, unless maybe it's like a 10 run lead. My concern with bringing him into a game like yesterday's would be what you do if he, for example, puts the first 2 men on base. You don't want to get the other team started on a big rally and you don't want to have to yank the pitcher after 2 batters. Wang not getting into a game is the downside to the fact that the Brewers have been in every game so far. Ideally you want his debut to come when the team is down by more than a couple of runs so you can give him more leeway if he gets off to a rough start. Better to write off a game that you're probably going to lose anyway than put a game that you have a good chance to win at risk.
