1. If history repeats itself they won't go up next year and the marginal player contracts may even go down a little. It really depends on the people on the market though. In 2004, the average salary dropped 3%. link I guess it is possible for a "market correction" next offseason.
2. The Team With the Highest Median Salary in MLB 2006: Boston Red Sox - $ 3,023,894 2005: New York Yankees - $ 5,833,334 2004: New York Yankees - $ 3,100,000 2003: New York Yankees - $ 4,575,000 2002: Seattle Mariners - $ 3,333,333 According to USA Today, the highest level median salaries have gone down since 2002...FWIW. By comparison: 2006: Milwaukee Brewers - $775,000 2005: Milwaukee Brewers - $420,000 2004: Milwaukee Brewers - $400,000 2003: Milwaukee Brewers - $428,000 2002: Milwaukee Brewers - $1,100,000 link
3. Winning = permanent buzz. Overpaying free agents = temporary buzz. Losing if overpaid free agent doesn't produce to his contract = loss of buzz.
4. Agent Says Pirates among top suitors for Suppan - 12/20/06 This seems like a horrible reason to go after Suppan.
5. Everything is cost/benefits. Nobody knows how high our payroll can reach. I wouldn't be surprised if Carlos Villanueva puts up "suppan numbers" this year. When you do your Christmas shopping this year for 25 people...will you spend 25% of your budget on one person...just to make a splash...because with inflation...the price of an "above average gift" will probably never go down?
6. Jeff Suppan graphs Not sure if this was linked to before and I'm no stat expert...but these graphs confirm to me that over his career...Suppan is not much more than one peg above "major league average." ERA: Above average since 2003 K/9: Well below average since 1996 BB/9: Good since 1997 K/BB: About average, whole career HR/9: About average since 2003 AVG: about average, heh WHIP: a tick below average, in 2006 LOB%: above average since 2003 Jeff Suppan = battler?
7. Davis in 2006 7 Win Shares 3 Win Shares Above Bench (Player) 92 ERA+ Suppan in 2006 12 Win Shares 8 Win Shares Above Bench (Player) 108 ERA+ Doug Davis - Hardball Times Jeff Suppan - Hardball Times Davis = 1 win better than replacement in 2006 Suppan = 2 2/3 wins better than replacement in 2006.
8. Can you imagine facing Jeff Suppan at PNC Park? That's like...double kryptonite. I think Suppan would continue to have success against our lineup if he went to Pittsburgh.
9. The Hardball Times article makes a lot of sense. One additional point, Suppan wouldn't have to push the Brewers over the top in 2007. If he helps bring Milwaukee to the playoffs in 2008, the deal could still be considered "worth it." If this deal means that we cannot lock up our younger players in 2009-2011...that would be very disappointing. If this is only a three-year deal...it would be over by then. I'm going to trust Melvin.
10. Suppan is 6-1 against the Brewers since 2004. At Miller Park: 1.29 ERA in six starts (since '04). This free agent market is crazy, so I guess I would be indifferent to the signing. In a world without money, Suppan would make the team better, though. Sheets Capuano Suppan Bush Villanueva (deserves the # 5 spot) ------- Vargas Gallardo Jackson
11. Carlos Lee is starting in LF for Texas, Wilkerson is DH. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=260729113
12. Cirillo would not be available, tonight. Of course, he took over for Koskie late. If you were just speaking in hypotheticals...I'd say Ned wouldn't pull Jenkins, but that doesn't necessarily correlate with what SHOULD happen.
13. Gavin Floyd 6'5" 210 lbs Age 23 Had a very rough 2005, getting beat up in 4 big league starts and 23 starts in Triple-A. "At 23, Floyd needs to learn how to pitch to disciplined hitters, any one of whom can turn around his fastball or hit a mistake curve over buildings." -Baseball Prospectus Also says he has a "mediocre fastball."
14. 15-2 win by Brevard County. 21 hits. 4 errors. 3 hits by Iribarren, Fermaint, Ezi and Rasheed. Wahpepah: 5 2/3 IP, 6 K, 1 BB, 2 R, 0 ER
15. Before Davis' last start, I believe he has 21 walks. So their information was a start late and for the wrong pitcher.
16. Shame on me for saying this: Branyan hits a HR for the Devil Rays, tonight...playing RF.
17. My thought (borrowed from Moneyball, of course) has been: You get 27 outs to do as much as you possibly can. Don't waste outs. Try not to make outs. Batting average in and of itself, holds some relevance, but does not do a good job in terms of measuring how good a player is. Alex Sanchez hitting .322 and Albert Pujols hitting .322 is deceptive on the surface. Of course, everyone would rather have Pujols, but according to batting average...they're just as good. Pujols OPS: 1.000 Sanchez: .700 Perhaps bottom of the 9th with runners in scoring position, you may want someone to go up there hacking. However, runs scored in the bottom of the 3rd inning count exactly the same as runs scored in the bottom of the 9th. A more patient approach throughout the game should mean more baserunners/opportunities and will tire the pitcher earlier.
18. Brewers Brady Clark CF J.J. 19. Branyan gets the nod at 3B tonight. Hall at SS.
20. If you look one on the Brewers website it says tonight and Sunday.
21. In Milwaukee, I think i'm listening to 1280 AM.
22. Most teams must figure that Prince will be our first baseman of the future. Unfortunately, if Prince were to start 3-4 days a week and play very very well...other GMs would be certain that we are trading Overbay. By playing Overbay everyday you: A. Showcase Lyle's talent(s). B. Disguise the fact that you believe Prince is ready to play everyday. C. Hopefully increases the return on Overbay. Just my two cents.
