  1. I agree with you - that Mets team is awfully scary right now, and I'm glad we don't have to play them anymore (at least in the regular season) - as I would not want to go up against them in a series with deGrom, Thor, Stroman and Wheeler. The Mets were the laughing stock of baseball when they went out and got Stroman before the deadline, but they might just get the last laugh when all is said and done.
  2. No doubt - these next few weeks are huge. And, now that we are into August, the light at the end of this 2019 tunnel is becoming clearer. Here's how I think this thing needs to play out for the Brewers (knowing full well of course that nothing ever seems to go according to plan): Tex: win 2/3 Min: win 1/2 @Was: win 2/3 (Scherzer is out, and maybe we can avoid one of Corbin/Strasburg in this series?) @Stl: win 1/3 (if we lose 2/3 in Wsh, then we need to win 2/3 here for a .500 trip) Ari: win 2/3 Stl: win 2/3 @Chc: win 1/3 Hou: win 1/2 Chc: win 2/4 @Mia: win 3/4 @Stl: win 2/3 SD: win 2/4 Pit: win 2/3 @Cin: win 2/3 @Col: win 2/3 To me, these expectations seem a bit lofty - especially given the current state of our pitching staff. And, this would still only leave us at 87 wins. Is that enough to hunt down the Cubs? Or, are we probably more likely to be going for a WC spot with this scenario? We'd have to hope that the Cubs go 25-23 down the stretch if we were to force a game 163 with them again this year, or 24-24 to beat them outright. Boy, that seems like it is a tough "ask," doesn't it? My guess is that the Cubs end up winning 90 games and taking the division by 3-4 games, when all is said and done. If we can get to 87 though, I'd have to think we'd at least be in a fight for one of the two WC spots.
  3. And, don't look now, but the Reds are only 6.5 games behind the Cubs (playing them 4 times this weekend), and only 4.5 games out of a wildcard spot. With Castillo, Bauer and Gray in that rotation - that's a team I would not want to face these final two months of the season. Watch the Mets and Reds (the two teams that made arguably the biggest deadline deals) be the two wildcard teams this year, while the other teams that were in the race at the deadline (but didn't do much to improve their teams) miss the playoffs completely.
  4. Yeah, I would say that the Mets currently have a much better chance than the Brewers do at getting one of those two WC spots. In fact, I'd almost say that the Mets might have as good of a shot as any team right now in the NL of landing one of those spots. That rotation should win a lot more games for them here over the next two months.
  5. So - I guess the big question would be - would he even get to us in the waiver process, or is a team like the Mets or Reds going to pick him up before we would even get a chance? Looks like he signed a 1 year deal with AZ this year for 3.25M, so to me - this seems like a no-brainer pickup for any team that is in contention right now, and needs bullpen help. Unfortunately, I think a team like the Mets or Reds will snag him before we even get the chance to.
  6. Thanks for the insight....much appreciated! I figured he probably wasn't going to be the next Brandon Woodruff, but glad to hear that there's at least some upside with his stuff - especially if he can learn to harness the command a bit more consistently?
  7. I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed in another thread, but since I don't see a separate thread on this topic - I thought I'd start one. Just curious for a scouting report on Dylan File? Is this someone that we should be starting to get legitimately excited about because of his stuff, or is this just one of those control type guys who's outsmarting minor league hitters (but probably won't be as fortunate against major leaguers)? He's put together one heck of a season so far, and as we know - has been dominating AA thus far. So, was just hoping to get more intel on this kid from those that know more about him. Thanks in advance!
  8. I wonder if in said deal, we could send over arcia+. I agree i love the idea of getting both. I absolutely think you could send over Arcia..Honestly, this one makes almost too much sense...for both sides. OK, so who says "no" to this type of a deal? Brewers get: Ahmed and Ray Dbacks get: Arcia, Burnes & Ashby We'd have Ahmed and Ray to help this year and next year, and the Dbacks get a couple of guys who they can literally plug right into their MLB roster with Arcia and Burnes - and a good looking prospect in Ashby who is a couple of years away. Would we have to throw in more to get a deal like this done?
  9. Thank You! No way to Mike Leake, how is he going to move the needle at all, other than he's a body to fill a spot in the rotation. That's it. Not only that. But, he's a guy you'd have to find a spot for next year at 11M and I think I saw a 5M buyout for him in 2021. Cannot imagine a scenario in which Stearns would be interested in that.
  10. So, if the Padres do trade Thor to SD for Margot+, the Padres would have even more of a surplus of SP. So, assuming we are talking to SD about some of their SP - which of the following group would you most like to see the Brewers get in a return for someone like Grisham: Lucchesi Lauer Allen Morejon I'm leaving Paddock, Quantrill and Gore off of this list, as I'm guessing those guys are untouchable.
  11. WOW! Not sure what else to say, besides that. I sure hope we hit on a bunch of your trades this offseason, as it appears that we would be trading away just about all of our talented players (sans Hiura). And, do we really know what we have in Grisham at this stage? I know we are all excited about him right now, but this is literally his first bit of success that he's had so far in his long minor league career.
  12. And the thing about Gray is he is top 10 in WAR this season Yeah, I saw that he has a 3+ WAR so far this year, which seems crazy to me. Can someone that knows more about how WAR is computed explain that? His numbers don't appear to be out of this world, but yet he's Top 10 in WAR? Don't get it.
  13. I saw someone on twitter posted the idea of Jonathan Gray from Colorado. Not sure if they would sell on him right now, but I think he has 2+ years of control left, and seems to be putting up some pretty solid numbers this year (especially considering 1/2 his games are in Colorado). Was looking at his overall splits though, and found it interesting that his home/road splits seem to be fairly consistent with each other - so doesn't appear to be a guy that would necessarily put up better numbers if you took him out of Coors Field.
  14. No kidding! Has a front office ever been so quietly pissed about their own team's success than the Giants front office has to be about their recent hot streak? They were in line to be one of the real "winners" of this trade deadline with guys like MadBum, Smith, Watson, Dyson, etc. all available. Now, it would seemingly be a major PR disaster if they trade any of those guys with them over .500 and in Bochy's last hurrah. And, they'll probably lose those guys for nothing in the offseason now. OUCH!
  15. I apologize if this was already discussed in another thread, but I saw the report this weekend that Bobby Wahl was throwing off the mound already, and that his next step would be facing live hitters. This shocked me, as I guess I had just assumed that he was out the entire season and we wouldn't hear his name again until next spring. But, is it now reasonable to expect him back pitching by end of August or early September? I know we can't really bank on him being a major contributor in the pen down the stretch, but is it possible that he could at least be a possibility?
  16. I would agree with this. We know Stearns is very calculated in everything he does, so I guess I would be surprised if we do anything major yet this week. I think he waits it out to see how this team gets through these next 6 games before he gets really serious about making any more major moves. Maybe we trade for a 2nd tier pen arm this week, but I just don't think he pulls the trigger on anything significant until we see how we manage these next 6 games at home. Go 4-2 (or better), and I think we become a big player next week. 3-3 might still make us a fairly significant player (depending on how far back we are from the Cubs). 2-4 (or worse), and I think we might just make a minor move or two and stand pat at the deadline next week. Hard to envision us going into full "sell mode" by next week, but I guess it's possible if we really fall on hard times during these next 6 games.
  17. Certainly an interesting idea, and I love the aggressiveness of this trade proposal. But, just a couple of important comments/questions: Are we asking the Dbacks to eat any of that remaining 70+M owed to Greinke for the '20 and '21 seasons? Or, are we just asking Mark A. to somehow fit that into our already crunched budget for the next two years? And, that doesn't even include the 8-9M that we would also now have to pay Robbie Ray in 2020. Also, for two top level rotation arms like this - I'm guessing it would take more than just Turang, Lutz, Ashby and Lemons to land them. I would imagine we'd have to start with either Freddy/Burnes, then Turang, Grisham, Rasmussen and Ashby. Would take an absolute haul to get these two guys - unless if we are eating all of ZG's salary the next two years, and even then it would still probably take a haul.
  18. And, why would we want Kipnis?
  19. Maybe if you look at the trade value site and completely ignore the last 2 months of production... Exactly! Don't look now, but Trent Grisham might just work his way back up into the next Top 100 prospect lists. In fact, I'd be surprised if he doesn't. And while I know the projections are still across the board on Dubon, I still really like his versatility and I just think that kid is driven to be an every day big leaguer. Honestly, I'd have a major issue even just giving up one of those guys for a 2 month reliever rental! I know it costs prospects to get better this time of year, but if we are going to go get a reliever rental - I'd rather shop more in the "thrift" bin and find another Soria or Swarzak type guy from the past two seasons.
  20. OK - so last year, we traded Kodi Medeiros and Wilber Perez (who?) for Joakim Soria at the deadline. Now, I realize that Soria isn't quite as highly thought of as Will Smith this year, but Soria had 16 saves and a mid 2's ERA with the White Sox at the time of the trade. So, we aren't talking about a mid-game reliever either. So, if that was the cost to get Soria last year, is it really going to cost us THAT much more to get Will Smith this year? Dubon and Grisham are probably two of our top three prospects right now (taking Hiura out of the equation of course) along with Turang. And I'd also put Rasmussen in our Top 10. There is simply NO WAY I'm trading three of our top 10 prospects for Will Smith - who we are only going to have for 2 months, and has already started his typical 2nd half of the season tumble! Please, please don't do this Stearns!
  21. Smith is good, but he's still a rental reliever. They're dreaming. Yeah, this is crazy to me! I also saw that the Giants site "Around the Foghorn" is suggesting a trade of Dubon, Grisham and Rasmussen for Will Smith. WHAT??!! No way in hell I'm trading that much for a rental reliever. At that price, they better be throwing in Mad Bum as well.
  22. It wouldn't shock me if Stearns still makes a couple of minor moves (as someone has already suggested), but boy - I'm going to be pretty ticked off if we trade some big prospect package now for a rental player like Will Smith, Bumgarner, etc. Of course - my tune might change a bit depending on what happens here over the next week or so. If we finish out this week 1-5 or 2-4, then I don't think it makes sense for us to do anything next week (unless if we go into sell mode). Go 5-1 or 4-2 the rest of this week, then maybe we get a bit more aggressive towards the deadline next week. I think we all can agree though that this team has just too many holes to fill with just a couple of additions at this stage. This team just isn't nearly as good as I thought it would be this year.
  23. I'm fine trading guys like Dubon and Grisham - but I really have no interest in trading them for rental players. Use them as trade assets for someone that you'll have some team control over beyond just this season. I'm not sure how open our window will remain in the next couple of years (or if it's even open right now), but I'd rather not put all of our chips just into the 2019 basket - especially given how mediocre this team looks right now.
  24. According to that trade value chart, if the Giants were interested in Dubon, it would take having to add another prospect in the caliber of Henry, Feliciano or Erceg to get it done evenly. And, this is why I hate trading for high value rental players! Is trading away this type of young talent really worth 2 months of a reliever? Especially for a guy like Will Smith who has a track record of regression during the 2nd halves of seasons? I could get behind the idea of trading Dubon and either Henry/Feliciano for a guy that we had an additional year of control of, but for 2 months - this seems preposterous to me!
  25. So, what are we realistically going to have to give up for 2 months of an all-star closer like Will Smith? And no - I don't want to hear the Phil Bickford jokes (although we all can dream, right!). I saw some SF Giants blog site had a proposal of Lutz, Z. Brown and Ernesto. Really? Please tell me that they are way off base in that projection! I know Brown is not having a good year, but that's still a guy that was highly thought of coming into the season, and that would be two of our top 6 prospects going back to the Giants - along with a big high upside guy in Ernesto.
