And that's the exact reason why I started to talk myself out of that package as a realistic trade option. If the Mets are trying to put together a competitive team for 2020 (which a trade for Hader would indicate), then why would they want to trade away two of their better offensive players. Wouldn't make much sense. I think they were mentioned earlier in this thread, but how about the White Sox as a team that might line up with us for Hader? Is a Cease/Vaughn package too much to ask for Hader? Or, how about a Kopech/Vaughn package? They are clearly trying to build a competitive team down there, and Hader could be a huge piece for them. They have enough money to go out and get one of the big F/A SP's on the market to replace either Cease/Kopech in the rotation, and Vaughn appears to be road blocked at 1B for a few years by Abreu. Would they make for a good match?

Yeah, couldn't agree with you more! As much as I love Hader and would cringe at the thought of the late innings next year without him - I also think that this might be the best time to trade him and maximize the return that you would get from him (and that return would have to be BIG for me to even consider it if I were DS). But, his workload over the past couple of seasons scares me, and I would just be a bit concerned that an injury is coming his way in 2020 which could really impact any trade value he'd have next winter. Let's hope a team like the Mets or the Dodgers make a hard push for him and give us 2-3 players that can fill some of our current holes on the MLB roster.

McNeil and Davis 1000% McNeil and Davis are your 3B/1B for the next 4 years. Ageed. Love the idea of McNeil and Davis coming back from the Mets. It's fun to dream on Dominic Smith, though. A lefty power that could theoretically put up 40 HRs a year playing in Miller Park. Like that deal much better than the Yankees proposal. I think Frazier is overrated, and Andujar is a complete hack in the field. Granted J.D. Davis is not a great defender either, but I'd still rather have him. That's kind of what I was thinking as well - McNeil and Davis over McNeil and Smith. With that in mind then - do we know what McNeil's defense is like at 3B and can Davis at least be an adequate defensive player at 1B for us? Also, I think it needs to be asked: do the Mets have replacements for both of these guys? Clearly they are not going to want to trade two of their premier bats for a guy like Hader if they didn't have some depth at those positions. I guess that's why I would find it very hard to believe that they'd even consider trading McNeil, since he's such a big piece of their every day lineup. Throw a guy like Davis into the deal as well, and I become even more skepticial that a deal like this would ever work out.
-
So, let's play the hypothetical game here: If the Mets offered a package of McNeil, Davis/Smith, and let's say a David Peterson for Hader - would you pull the trigger if you were David Stearns? Also, who would you prefer between JD Davis or Dominic Smith? Also, would you prefer a deal like this over a Andujar/Frazier package from the Yankees? I definitely think the Yankees would have to throw in more in a package for me to want to pull the trigger, but curious what everyone else is thinking.

The good news here is that Stearns holds all of the bargaining chips with another team. No reason to deal him unless if you are absolutely blown away with an offer. And, you should have a large number of teams that would have a lot of interest in adding an arm like Hader to their relief staff. We are talking about a guy that can go multiple innings and dominate really good MLB hitters while he is out on the mound. Not to mention, a guy that you'd have control of for at least 3 more years. I'm sure Stearns and Co. have a price in mind for Hader, and if it's not met - then there really is no reason why you would have to trade him this winter. Of course, you are always gambling a bit with relief pitchers and the volatility of that position. Not to mention injuries. As much as I love Hader, I just have this gut feeling that we might be best to find a trade partner this winter before his value drops.
-
As much as we would all hate to see Hader go, I do think this might be the best time to really capitalize on his trade value. If I'm Stearns though, I'm not trading him unless if I'm getting a haul in return. The guy has been the best relief pitcher in the NL (and arguably all of baseball) the past two seasons, and if you are going to trade him with 3 years of control left - you better get a lot back in return. With that said - let's say we do find a trade partner for Hader. What then do we do with our relief core? We are currently in a competitive window right now, and losing a guy as unique and talented like Hader would hurt badly in those later innings. We've already lost Pomeranz, and we also have no idea what Knebel is going to look like in his return from injury this spring. I'm sure that DS isn't going to want to spend a ton of money on free agent relief pitchers, but I'd hate to go into next season relying on Knebel as our closer. Are there other good options out there?

Yeah, find a cheap backup catcher to platoon with Pina (similar to Kratz a couple of years go), and use some of this $$ saved from Yaz to go improve the team in other areas. We all knew that Yaz was by far the best C on the market this winter, and that we probably weren't going to be the highest bidder for his services. I'm sure DS and Co. have a backup plan ready to go.

Is it time to consider moving Hader
Madhawk23 replied to brewers888's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Generally speaking - I would agree 100% with what you are saying. I do think the Brewers would have to be literally blown away with an offer if they were to even entertain trading Hader right now. Especially considering that we are in a win-now mode. However, I also wouldn't rule it out completely. The fact is - relievers are the most volatile position in all of baseball year to year, and we already started to see a few warts with Hader this past season giving up the home run ball at a high clip. And, just look what we got for Thornburg a few years ago when we traded him to the Red Sox, and he wasn't even half the pitcher that Hader is today. So, if a team like the Dodgers gets really desperate this winter and approaches DS with a Lux/Ruiz or Lux/Gonsolin/Rios offer (where we could plug 2-3 holes at the MLB level with quality players), wouldn't you have to consider moving Hader in that situation. Then, go out and use some of that money saved to bring back Pomeranz and maybe another reliever? -

How is Mejia defensively? I'm not into all of the defensive statistics, so hoping someone else could fill that in for me. Also, would the Padres have enough SP depth, that they might also throw in one of their current SP's into a deal for Hader? Either Lauer, Lucchesi, Lamet or Quantrill. Are any of those guys worth trading for? I guess I don't know enough about these guys, but they certainly have a bunch of young SP's in their rotation, with more on the way. So, just wondering if they could trade from an area of depth? Maybe a Hader for Mejia, one of the above SP's and another decent prospect? Is that a reasonable trade for Hader? Too little or too much in return? To be honest, this deal wouldn't thrill me from a Brewers fan perspective, so the more I think about them as a trade partner - the less interested I am. -
Yeah, the ONLY way I'm interested in a guy like Hamels is if the market just doesn't open up for him like he would hope and he'd be willing to take a 1 year deal. I don't think I'd invest more in a 36 year old arm than that. If we could get him for 1 year, 10M - then I'd probably take a chance on him. I mean, is someone really going to throw multiple years and big money at him at this stage in his career? Especially as teams are getting tighter and wiser with their money?
-
Well, he got a first hand view of us beating the Cubs two years ago for the division (and then getting to game 7 of the NLCS), and knocking them out of the playoffs this past season to secure the final WC spot. So, I guess I don't see why he wouldn't see us as a contender. Yeah, the Braves are probably in a slightly better spot than the Brewers in that category - but you also have teams like the Braves, Nats and Mets in that division who are going to make it very difficult to win that division over the next couple of years.
-
The real question, can Brewer fans move on from his "this isn't a rivalry with so many Cubs fans at Miller Park" comment from a couple of years ago? In all seriousness though - I would absolutely take a flyer on a 1-yr deal with Hamels. You know he's going to want to play on a competitive team that has a shot at the playoffs, and he'd have to know that the Brewers could really use another SP in the rotation next year. I see that MLBTradeRumors has him projected to the Braves at 2 yrs/30M. If so, that seems a bit too steep for the Brewers to pay for a 36 year old SP. If the market doesn't open up for him on a multi-year deal, I wonder what he might accept on a 1 year offer?

The Twins might be a team that would have some interest in Hader, but I guess I can't see them giving up Polanco. They are clearly in a win-now mode as well, so why would they want to give up their stud, controllable SS in this deal - and replace him with the no-hitting SS in Arcia? Yeah, they'd get Hader back in return - but I doubt this is something they'd be willing to do. Maybe they'd throw us an offer of Royce Lewis and Balazovic for Hader, but this does nothing for our win-now mentality, as neither of those guys are ready to contribute quite yet at the MLB level. -

Then you don't "get". The Brewers are under no pressure or obligation to deal Hader this offseason. If he's dealt, it isn't going to be for a blocked 1B as the headliner, and a bunch of "maybes" years away from the majors. It would be for a haul that includes either super high-end youngsters or a package of high-upside ML-ready players. If you don't see offers like that, simply don't engage. Exactly! We're not trading away one of the best/nastiest relievers in the game (that we still control for several more years) to a "blah" package of prospects. I don't care what the trade value database/reports tell you, there's just no way that Stearns is making that kind of move. A team would have to knock our socks off with an offer this winter if we are going to be dealing Hader - and it would have to include young talent that is MLB ready, because our window to win is now. -
I don't hate your option #2 here. If Didi can bounce back to his pre-2019 form, that would certainly help negate some of the offensive dropoff you'd see at the C position by bringing in D'Arnaud instead of Yaz. But, you are banking on that to happen, and obviously nobody knows if he would return to that form? Also, do we think Moose is really only going to get 2/20M this winter? I know the market hasn't necessarily been there for him the past two winters, but just feels like this might be the year that some team with a need at 3B (and misses out on Rendon/Donaldson) will give Moose a deal. I could see the Nats giving him a 3/36M type deal after Rendon goes elsewhere.

Meh....no thanks. I see nothing but major question marks in the four guys you listed. Yeah, maybe our farm system ranking gets a slight boost, but I would want 1-2 "can't miss" prospects for a guy like Hader if we are going to trade him away this early. Just look what the Mets had to give up last year for Edwin Diaz. Kelenic and Dunn came back in that package! -
Yeah, I'm absolutely on board with this move. Use some of this money saved by not signing Chase to go out and sign Lyles (still hard to know how much Lyles would cost us), and maybe you'll still have a little extra left over then that you can use towards another F/A signing? It's been very clear over the past two years that Stearns/CC did not really trust Chase much, so I feel like the writing was on the wall for awhile that we weren't going to be picking up his option. Now, we don't have to pay the 1M buyout either - and again, we can hopefully use that money saved to go find guys that they would trust.

And, maybe this all played a role in why he did what the did last night after the game, but I still think you take the "high road" in that situation, and be a "team guy" for one last interview session. Just seems really selfish to basically say that you are no longer a member of the team, just minutes after the WS ended. I get that emotions are very high in that moment, but a true professional would have handled them a bit better than this. Just my opinion. I'm going to guess this was premeditated win or lose by his agent...he wouldn't have had that stupid hat in his locker had it not been. I look forward to Cole waiting until late march of next year to sign a deal, simply because I expect his and Boras' demands to be insane (even if he truly is a great starting pitcher) Normally I might agree with you that this could drag out into the late winter months, but something tells me that there is going to be a team (i.e. Angels) that is going to target Cole from the get-go this year and give him some ridiculous offer to get him locked in early this winter. Similar to what happened with Corbin last winter - but on a much larger scale. And as already mentioned, that fits the Angels M.O. perfectly. I'm going to guess that he either signs at the winter meetings in December or shortly thereafter (but before Christmas).

That was my thought too. Pulling that crap minutes after your team lost Game 7 of the World Series? Really dude? To me, he solidified that the only team he really cares about is his bank account. I know all these guys play for money, but most of them at least have a little tact. Yeah - wow, that's crazy. I know he's immensely talented (and any team would love to have him anchoring their rotation), but that really comes across as a very me-first attitude. Not sure if I'd want to have that on my team? With that said - I could absolutely see the Angels breaking the bank for this guy. They need to start capitalizing on Trout's peak years here, and they desperately need SP. And let's face it - they aren't afraid to ever give out crazy big contracts, that they'll end up regretting a few years later.
-
I know that the WAR trade value probably lines up to do a Seagar for Hader swap - straight up. But, I'd still have a bit of a problem trading away 4 years of control of the guy that's been voted as the best NL reliever the past two years - for only two years of a very good SS in Seager. I know Seager would/should help our offense greatly, but I feel like we'd need more in return there in giving up a weapon as good as Hader (even with the home run issues this past year). Anyone else agree on this, or am I just completely off base with this line of thinking? I'd be on board with a Seagar/Ruiz for Hader package. In fact, I might even be willing to throw the Dodgers someone like Payton Henry in that deal as well, if they needed something else coming back there way.
-
Would Seager not have to be in the package going back to the Indians though for Lindor? I guess I could see this being a Seager/Ruiz/Downs type package going back to the Indians. Or, would they try to go with Lux instead of Seager - to get the extra years there? Cleveland still has a team that is capable of being competitive next year (especially with their pitching), so I can't imagine that they would just trade Lindor to LA for a bunch of unproven prospects, right?
-
I'd be shocked if Grandal accepts a 1 year deal with anyone this winter. Some team is going to give him a 3-4 year offer for much more than what the Brewers can afford to lay out for a 30+ year old catcher.

Cubs hire David Ross as new manager
Madhawk23 replied to patrickgpe's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Yeah, this feels like a Theo "yes man" that he is bringing in to have more control over, and to manage by the numbers. With that said - that's certainly the trend in baseball these days, and while I'm not sure if I'd call CC a "yes man" for Stearns - there is definitely a good relationship there between those two and it's very clear that they work side by side on many managerial decisions for the Crew. It will be interesting though to see how Ross handles going from being many of these guy's teammates to now being their manager. I know CC played with Braun, but I'm guessing he was probably the only one that was still on the team when he took over the manager's role, right? So, you didn't have as much of that dynamic as Ross will have. But, if Ross was the "hard ass" on those championship teams, then I'm sure he wouldn't have too big of an issue fitting right back into that role - except this time he's the manager. But, with my Cubs hatred - I hope this blows up in their face!
