  1. Luke Skywalker had a new forearm and hand like, the same day after it was cut off by a light-saber. I am continually amazed at how modern medicine has not kept up at all with science fiction.
  2. I started chirping about this during one of the Twins IGTs and again during the Parra - Webb finale, and now that the 400,000 homestand is nearing the mark (albeit projected only) it is worth mentioning again for its sheer audacity of awesomeness. Of course it helps that 6 of those days are Friday-Saturday-Sundays bookending the weekdays. and I guess it doesn't hurt to premier the biggest acquisition of the Miller Park era (sorry Jeffrey Hammonds) during one of the lower draw days either... F: 41,463 actual Sa: 39,176 actual Su: 42,163 actual M: 35,161 actual = 1,485,529 season total (JS total is incorrect today for some reason) T: 42,500 (projected tonight) (CC!) W: (Sheets)... 36,250 placeholder Th: (Bush)...33,750 placeholder F: 42,000 assumed Sa: 42,500 assumed Su: 45,037 (if carrying a 5 game winning streak fever, the Central deficit is 1 game, CC has already been elected Mayor, etc et al) That's the 400,000 strong homestand with the total attendance at the break 1,725,000 but MAN, that still leaves 1,275,00 to get over 33 dates, which means an average of ~38,500 to hit 3 MILLION. Guess the 7 Cubs dates and the playoff clinchers are going to have to pull some serious 42,000+ weight.
  3. any irony in the fact that Zach Jackson had his cup of coffee in 2006 and contributed to the overall crapiness of the Crew that year resulting in the high 2007 draft pick that netted LaPorta?
  4. Only an idiot hits on 15 when the dealer is showing a 6 - I'm not sure that this is the point you were trying to make.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif AHA! called out with just cause; kudos. I will freely admit my error, and I'm surprised it took this long to surface. What sucks is having to hit your 16 when the dealer shows a 7. The odds are against you but it's the right thing to do. it's the only thing to do (unless you're a maverick card counter and the shoe would strongly suggest otherwise.) that was more of the point I was going for. my new thought on "being the team to watch in the 2nd half" because our team is going to be much more exciting / viable: 2006 was the year of Sheets and Ohka going down; bush, doug davis and capuano left with hendrickson, eveland and z jackson logging innings... david bell and tony graf and mench all over the place. a disappointing year all around that only (developed players and) put us in a position to draft "that guy" the following year. Well that guy, LaPorta, is viewed as a big part of the Brewers' future. but he is also a relic from that awful 2006 season. And "that guy", nothing more than a place holder on the draft board order before Jack Z struck gold, is our reward for the humility suffered during that please-be-forgotten-soon season. we watched all that crap all season long; we got rewarded with a high pick to turn the talent tide of the 75-87 Crew. 2007's draft pick has the single-handed ability (admittedly in the right pacakge) to turn ourselves into an instant World Series contender. Gonna love watching this team in the 2nd half after making the difficult, yet prudent, decision to deal "that guy"
  5. must hit jugular... must get to bullpen underbelly... must get to Miller feeling like groovy world-beaters... must keep foot on throat... must ransack future for Sabathia...
  6. Protecting Braun against Webb? Should be the other way around, but man I love Kapler. A win here increases the probability of a 400,000 strong homestand by 33%... you can see my scientific analysis at www.factorsofbaseballthatcan'tbeprovedbystatisticsarethereforemeaningless.com
  7. So I sucked it up for 7 bleary-eyed west coast innings that challenged my love of watching baseball only to miss the Weeks spark, the bottom 8th equalizer, the top 9 gift / fundamentals display / Cam re-clutchinessitude, and bottom 9 Torres door slamming? Guess I picked the wrong 2 innings not to watch, but you what?, I really went to bed thinking the game was ours. I will never understand why Shouse was in there for Reynolds and C Young, unless there was some reverse-conventional-splits action. Weeks is the ignitor - the team will go as he goes Kapler is invaluable - we should forego an infielder for a short-center fielder Is Gagne the "4th, 5th and 6th inning guy" out in the pen now? edit:oh, and I simply can't convey my level of annoyance with the FSN-Arizona feed... AND i was watching the game on mute b/c of the sleeping wife. There was just as much - IF NOT MORE - coverage of the stupid Arizona fas (22,000 only, really?) and their hats and CAR signs as the game action itself and it made me want to gouge out my eyeballs with a rusty, ebola-infested spoon.
  8. just to keep this relevant to the Major League Forum topic that got opened (i see a lot of Melvin, Jack Z, Sabathia, prospect tangents), I want to say that I completely agree with Buster Olney. I am so totally going to be watching the Brewers in the 2nd half. with that out of the way, I've resisted chirping in on the topic because I simply can't wrap my hands around this monumental paradigm shift. I have absolutely no frame of reference from which to draw. Hunt lazily wrote a so-so column exploring the topic, and maybe last year's tryst with San Diego was just a mindset appetizer. I know I cringed every time I saw Thatcher lay a bagel on someone during my daily box score review. Yankee fans have practice with this. Yankee fans (less so in the Cashman era) eagerly wonder what minor leaguers to trade away for what veteran. We are standing on top of the high dive looking down all googly eyed ready to poop our pants. there are can't miss prospects like Braun, Bruce, Longoria then there are can't miss prospects like Marte, Kershaw, R Hill... (clayton just needs more seasoning, i get it. i'm just trying to make a point) a prospect is just that. lots and lots of 49ers went to California as prospectors but way, WAY more people walked away without gold than struck it rich. You know what sucks? Having to take a hit on 15 when the dealer is showing a 6. Well, man up, because that is EXACTLY where we are right now. Lastly, I see 3 options: blockbuster, minor upgrade and doing nothing. Scratch the last option because that is suicide. Before the statties pre-emptively scorn me I will say that the unprovable psychological boost of bolstering the squad with an all-star at mid-season is a major factor in winning a penant. You know that the Cubs will do something small a la Meche or large say B Roberts / Burnett, so are we going to hold serve neutralizing the booster rocket factor? Good thing Olney chimed in, I don't know if I would have watched the Brewers otherwise.
  9. Wow. Our LOOGY takes care of two Dangerous righties... Fielder makes a tough pick look easy. Good night ladies and gentlemen, I'm falling asleep knowing this one is going to turn our way.
  10. The Brewers need more Kapler in the line-up like I need more fiber in my diet. Settle in here for a couple Villy... smell the W
  11. Webb is going to throw 9 innings in 90 minutes tomorrow if we bring the same approach to the plate as tonight.
  12. is all this talk about the 2 comp picks premature? are we sure Sabathia is going to be an "A"?
  13. Are all major league umpires on vacation? Do all of them get their 4 weeks at the same time? MJH were debating the asininity of having a crew of minor league umps for the Cubs - Sox Sunday night game.
  14. This series has the potential to lower the next homestand's attendance to a paltry 300,000 from a robust 400,000. Danger flag indeed. I would be ecstatic with a 2 - 2 split here now.
  15. dogs with tapeworms that have diarhea and who fart in cars with windows broken in the Up position smell better than Cameron at the plate
  16. I want to see more Gabe Kapler. Outfield, 2B, C... I don't care. Find a place in the line-up for his professionalism. And yes to echo a poster... Brian Roberts is the answer! Let's contribute to the Os of 2010. Man would that be an upgrade.
  17. I have been pounding this question into TH's and Witrado's useless mailboxes... always wording it more pointedly to try to get them to say something different from the "company line" of: he's gone for the year. The day after his surgery, Yo said he'd be back in September. Sure, Yo is neither a surgeon nor a physical therapist - but the number 1 thing that can accelerate a recovery is a positive mindset. And that is not just kooky eastern medicine or robin-williams-as-clown-doctor-movie talk. i am always curious to know how Yo's spirits are / is he traveling with the team / enjoying & building the camaraderie / what stage of the rehab he is in... but it feels like there is a gag order given from above on this one. the ace lingering in the hole. personally, i fully expect to see him for the NLCS (2 inning bullpen guy?) - and only partially because i am delusional.
  18. ummmm, am i missing something? i don't salivate over these guys nearly as much as some in this community, but uh, that would be some temporary pitcher. If that's Shapiro's opening negotiation volley, I think I am at the wrong car lot. Gallardo - Suppan - Parra - McClung / Villenueva / Bush... should be a fine base.
  19. the saddest part of all is what will happen to the Admirals. part of the sales pitch to bring him back involves an imaginary look into the future hanging of the #15 from the rafters... or, a painting of the number on some concrete as the case may be in Milwaukee. Right next to the 2008 World Series Championship pseudo-banner of course.
  20. and yes, that Favre to Brooks over the middle pass that Torres pulled off on the sac bunt was an inconspicuously spectacular play. kudos to Rickie too. So much chatter from the Atlanta play by play and color team about the Brewers' fundamentals. man. Cox would be getting RIPPED apart endlessly on this board right now for his use of Chipper. let's hope that B Roberts, Markasis and Scott use that game over there as a fuse lighting, eh?
  21. HELL YES NED! HELL YES SAL! How 'bout that 4th run, huh? BB, SB, SacB, SacF the decision to trust Torres with Francoeur... playing the odds with Corky. awesome.
  22. Dear Ned, I am still on vacation; let someone else have this one. Yours, Sal
  23. Definitely questionable move to use Chipper there. Bush's 7th was fantastic - buckling down to avoid the big inning after the lead-off double.
