  1. According to J.C. Bradbury at Sabernomics.com, Howard should have gotten $97 million or 19 and a half per year. The Phillies overpaid by about 28% according to this estimate. He also estimates Pujols as worth $40 million/year! If the Cardinals overpaid by as much as the Phillies did, Pujols would get over $50 million per year. Makes ARod's deal look cheap. As far as Prince goes, he is as good as gone.
  2. My suggestion would be Don Money. He knows all of our top prospects and what they can do. I should just not watch this team anymore. Living on the East coast it's basically the Nats where the Crew was awful and this. I just don't see this team, as constituted making a run at the playoffs or even .500.
  3. If Salome is blocked by Zaun/Kotteras, he's not much of a prospect. Personally, I still have high hopes for him. I suspect the Brewers are not pleased with his defensive progress or he might be the backup now. I would also probably have dumped Frederickson before some of the other pitchers. He hasn't shown much yet.
  4. He didn't throw 100+ pitches in less than 5 innings with a 10 run lead because of bad fielding. Give me a break. It's a wonder they make any plays behind this guy. He will not throw strikes. It's why I wanted him gone in the first place. Fastball topping out at about 83 today. I think he's cooked. Not saying he should be DFA'd just yet. The mistake was made, let's not compound it with foolish moves.
  5. Vintage Doug Davis. 100+ pitches in less than 5 innings with a 10 run lead. Glad he didn't get a W.
  6. Thanks Macha for leaving him in WAY to long. Macha's in a zim zam.
  7. Reading the tea leaves. Mark A vents about salaries and then Gallardo is signed. I'm afraid that these are connected. Does this mean that Mark was frustrated about the inability to sign Prince after a seemingly "fair" offer? The Gallardo signing could be "Plan B". I'm afraid the window to sign Prince has come and gone, if it ever existed. The longer he is unsigned, the less an extension will be worth to him. I know many of you want Prince traded anyway. I'm just less confident that Doug will get anywhere close to reasonable value. I fear a collection of Overbay and Gomez types who will do nothing to improve the club. Looking at the system, where are the hitting replacements? Lawrie is really the only hitter who looks like he may be a real asset in the Majors. The rest are really more complementary players. Most of the rest of the major prospects appear to be pitchers. Are we just going to go from a club with not enough pitching to one with not enough hitting? Where am I going wrong? How does this club progress? Ideas?
  8. It's amazing that the 1987 Hobey Baker Award winner is still playing professionally. Even more amazing that Chelios is still playing.
  9. I wonder how the Giants fans would respond if the Brewers had a Bochy type manager and he plunked Lincecum in his first at bat against the Brewers? Just upholding baseball traditions you know. An 80 mile an hour pitch can break your hand if it hits right (or wrong depending on how you think of it).
  10. This is a different situation than CC. The Brewers control Prince for 2 more years. That was not true for CC. If Prince wants a longer term deal now to insure his future, the Brewers are the ONLY team that can do that now without Brewers permission.
  11. Nobody mentioned Mike Jones. He deserves to have a good year after all he's been through. How about Walla? A little disappointing in his brief appearances last year.
  12. Camden Yards is a bandbox, especially for lefties. He played mostly catcher with the Brewers but not with the O's, which would lead to more offense. I'd be very surprised if BJ was a juicer. I suppose Cal's your next target?
  13. Those who think they will go to Brewers/Badger games---I ride the MARC (Maryland Commuter Rail) into DC every day. When the Orioles built Camden Yards, they said MARC would provide a train to each Oriole game. It lasted one year. The conductors said the fares did not even cover the fuel costs. There will be no special trains to sports events. It's simply not feasible economically. Baltimore/Washington is much more densely populated than Wisconsin. It should be easier to work here than in Wisconsin. It still doesn't work. Trains don't run on weekends. Not enough demand. If you think you will do something in Chicago on the weekend forget it. Bottom line. Trains are only economically efficient if there is very dense population. Doesn't exist in Wisconsin. If this service is necessary, they should put the money into improving bus service. The bus could even get it's own road, etc. Busses can carry a huge amount of people with far more flexibility than trains. Nobody likes them but they are far, far cheaper and more efficient.
  14. The Brewers are the only team that can sign Prince to an extension now. If he gets hurt in the next year or two, he could end up with nothing. Therefore, the Brewers should be able to sign him for less than any other team now. The longer they wait, the less that is true. It may already be too late. I'm just afraid the Brewers will back to the Royals, Pirates pack unless they have both Prince and Braun. With both of them, they will always be a factor. With one gone, I'm afraid they will struggle. I have zero confidence Melvin will get enough in a deal. I'm afraid he will come up with 3 or 4 Gomez type players.
  15. Too down on Kendall. It's not his fault he played too many games. Had he played 100 games or so last year, his offensive numbers would undoubtedly have been better. If Zaun catches 80% of Brewer games next year, look for his offense to drop off precipitously too. In addition to the natural decline with age. If Lucroy/Salome/whoever go into a zig zang (whatever Macha called it) this may well happen. With a major league manager I might like this deal but I'm deathly afraid Zaun will become one of Macha's pet players like Kendall was.
  16. manager Lou Lamoriello ? Hockey and Cape Cod huh? I wonder if there are many other baseball/hockey types?
  17. Age 20: Gomez 275/331/376/707 Cain 307/384/425/809 Age 21: Gomez 281/350/423/773 Cain 276/338/344/683 Age 22: Gomez 275/355/392/747 Cain 279/356/448/804 Probably a one year rental, if he even lasts all of next year. Doug should have kept looking.
  18. when you offer only 62% of the market rate For the total package yes. Per year it was competitive. I think $23 versus $20 million per year. To me, that is a competitive bid. I'm not going to try to mind read what was in Melvin's mind about whether the deal would be accepted or not. The player expressed publicly the desire to remain with the team. To me, and most fans probably, the Brewers made an effort. $100 million is not an insignificant amount of money for a club like the Brewers. My original point was the need to make a reasonable offer to Prince. Perhaps below market rate.
  19. I don't have negative towards Sabathia. Quite the contrary. The Brewers offered him a fair deal and earned the fans' respect by doing it. The fans have been turned off in the past (Molitor anyone?) by not at least offering a fair deal. It makes them seem like they don't care if the team wins or not.
  20. What makes you think he is going to retire? Plenty of time to turn on the Vikes too.
  21. Might I suggest buffalo meat instead? I've had it and I think it's better (and more lean) than hamburger. Or is that not exotic enough?
  22. If Braun is having shoulder trouble, he should sit out the rest of the season.
  23. Thanks to Mass and everyone else who helped this year. Also to the commenters who make this so enjoyable for us lurkers, especially those ones who are local followers of the minor league teams. This is a daily read for me and often so necessary, when the big club lays an egg, to keep some perspective.
  24. I am enjoying watching Piniella and Milton Bradley. We have had a great year out of Prince. A good year out of Braun. Gallardo has lasted the whole year (just about) without injury. There are still good things happening.
