  1. Agreed. It's tough to be mad at Santana these days and Bandy/Perez hit the ball hard. It's that bullpen that is the issue. Again, and it's only going to get worse as the innings pile up.
  2. According to BR, both Broxton and Villar are negative WAR players, so I'm assuming that trade offer was in blue. I'd offer them Ray, Clark, and Kodi
  3. Just tip your cap and move on. This argument is lost. None of us saw this coming. We didn't see Segura turning into a 5 WAR SS, and I'm sure AZ didn't see Anderson turning into a 3 ERA starter. It happens.
  4. I knew Briggs would say something(and he did though I believe it was deleted) and looking at his stats...before they get inflated by a single game: .308 OBP 97 OPS+ .4 WAR I don't get why he acts like we are missing out on something great and made some horrific decision to let him go. Even if Scooter Gennett was here he still wouldn't start over Hernan Perez. Heck give me a redo button and I still prefer Villar over Gennett long term. Give the man his due. He said Scooter was better than Villar and certainly Franklin, and he was right. Oddly enough, he had his big game playing LF, a position the Brewers didn't think he could play. What's done is done but after a 4 HR night, give Briggs the mic, he earned it.
  5. Let Briggs have some fun. Why not?
  6. Agreed. That turned into a pretty big deal. Anderson has been excellent as has Segura.
  7. Not really sure how you can blame Feliz for all but two BP pitchers being terrible this year. Is it Villar's fault that Broxton hasn't lived up to his 2016 second half too? This is where the analytics guy jump the tracks. Baseball players are odd. They really need to know their role and to be comfortable. Not everyone who showed good number pitching the 7th can plug and play and pitch the 9th. High leverage guys pitch well in high leverage situations and of course putting a guy who is ok in general but his warts come out in high leverage spots. We see that in Knebel who has been amazing right up until we made him the full time closer. Broxton and Villar both are bad because they are flawed players.
  8. In before Briggs Scooter 4-4 3 HRs and 8 RBIs against the Cardinals of all teams.
  9. I think we all expect wild streaks from white hot to he will never get another hit. What I'm sure no one expected was his negative dWAR, which is unacceptable. D isn't supposed to be variable.
  10. Junior for Pint
  11. I didn't realize how bad Broxton has been this year. BR has him at -0.4 WAR, Fangraphs as 0.3. I guess with as much hear as Villar draws, he flew under the radar.
  12. The signing of Feliz is the root cause of all of this. I have no idea what Stearns thought he had in him but whatever it was, he has caused a domino effect in the bullpen. Had Feliz been an even adequate closer, Knebel would have been the 8th inning guy where he would have been lights out, Barnes the 7th, and the rest as needed. When Feliz crashed and burned, guys who aren't used to higher leverage outs now had to pick up the slack. The results were as they say, predictable.
  13. Agreed, they weren't expecting much from the MLB club, so they put in a bunch of cheap guys as space fillers hoping that maybe a Hughes or a Feliz would turn into a flip candidate. But then fringe types like Thames, Bandy, Shaw, and Pina played way over any possible career expectations and that shined a bright light on how bad the pen was built, by design. In 2017, the bullpen is probably the most difficult area to fix. Everyone has caught on to the 5 to 6 inning starter then the chess game begins with these 8 man pens. Want an elite reliever? Then start with trading Brinson plus to get ONE let alone the 2 more we really need. We won't even attempt to fix that mid season except maybe some call ups. I'd like to see Hader become our Andrew Miller.
  14. Well just based on the construction of the major league roster and the number and type of transactions, it appears they are somewhat comfortable with their starting pitching but it's clear they think they don't have any young, elite relievers anywhere near ready to go.
  15. Huge bounce back win. CC doesn't get enough credit. He keeps these guys ready to play no matter the circumstances.
  16. Do this exercise: take a baseball and jam it as far as possible between your two fingers. Then look at your foreman muscles as this is happening. Then realize you are trying to throw it 90+ with those muscles already at max stress. If I was in player development I'd start a camp that does nothing but teach kids the knuckleball or submariner. The arm isn't build for today's pitching style.
  17. Santana probably has more value to us than on the trade market. He could be a solid 3 WAR type like someone said and we need guys like that at his cost. Junior absolutely should be traded. He is too old to help us when we will be good and he is a hot commodity in what will always be a sellers market for SP. I love the idea of trading Ray now. He is currently a top 40 prospect so trading him now before that falls is smart. I'm not seeing an impact player there and we hardly need another decent but not elite OFer.
  18. This is a horrendous roster that played way way way over its norm so far. Fangraphs has us are the 5th worse roster in the game and if you take a step back and look at the big picture that's about right. http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=23 They had a nice two months and games like this were going to happen. This season is about developing the guys who will be here in 2019, not playing for the WS.
  19. I mean do we really have big 9th inning come from behind rallies no matter who the opposing closer is? Today doesn't really have anything to do with Knebel because he wasn't available . It shouldn't take an elite closer to hold a 3 run lead. If Torres can't do the job, he doesn't belong here. They could DFA all of Torres, Drake, Feliz and Hughes tomorrow and I wouldn't bat an eye. By definition, if we had a closer with a 18 ERA we would have won. This has been a bad bullpen all year, they just barely hid their high WIP by having a mediocre bullpen ERA. As the season goes on they become exactly who the rest of the league thought these guys were when they were released in the first place. Feliz was the key to this mess. He didnt come through and that caused a ripple effect so no one has a role anymore and it's up to CC to guess who will be adequate.
  20. These guys have been terrible. It's only a matter of time before their super high WIP turns into runs. At the end of the day you can expect a retread or two to be a gem but they usually are what you think they are. The bullpen guys (and roster) were scrap heap pick ups because their old teams didn't want them.
  21. At least you didn't watch it. Still trying to figure out what I just witnessed. That must have been a joy to watch. What were BA and Rock saying?
  22. Did I read that box score correctly? 26 strike outs? Uh what?????
  23. They really have exceeded expectations by a huge margin. If they had a bullpen they could make this interesting.
