  1. I strongly disagree with the mentality of keeping a guy just because we can afford him. I'm not arguing that we should trade him, but we need more of a reason to keep a guy beyond just being financially able to. My comment isn't exclusively based on that we can afford him. Rather it's based that any Braun trade will mean we either send a lot of money or take a bad contract in return. If it's a straight trade that's fine, but I doubt one is available. We don't need a 33 year old OF who needs to sit out regularly. But we don't need to dump him, either.
  2. Aren't we less than the Padres payroll when factoring in players not on the team? At this point we might as well hold on to Braun until someone gets desperate because we can afford his contract.
  3. The team is on fire right now. Hitting and pitching all in line. Is it safe to get excited about this team?
  4. Great move to pick up pool money. That should be the name of the game for us.
  5. Without the DH we only by the most technical of terms do we have any chance. Which to say realistically we have none. Too bad. This guy looks to be a game changer that we badly need.
  6. 1. This team looks like it'll be pretty bad. Take the under on 70 wins. Truth 2. Perez was a one year wonder who hit his ceiling last year. Im on the fence here. Probably not as good as last year, but not as bad as he has looked. 3. Broxton's 2nd half 2016 was a fluke, we wont see that player again. Too soon to tell, especially factoring in his HBP 4. Aguilar should get as many ABs as Thames this year. Truth, I really like how Aguilar handles the glove too. 5. Peralta, Nelson, and Anderson will all be better than Davies this year. Too soon. 6. This team will break the all time MLB strikeout record of 1543 - set by the 2016 Brewers. Truth 7. Villar will never play passably well anywhere in the IF. Truth though I suppose it depends on your definition of passable.
  7. Who are the young arms he missed on? I was talking about losing Diaz when it was easy to handle him on the 40 instead of the junk he kept That was insane. A 22 year old who throws 98 wasn't protected on a rebuilding team.
  8. Franklin vs Villar is coming. So far Villar is an absolutely horrible defensive 2B. On this team I'd be willing to put up with his D if he was hitting like 2016. But striking out 50% of the time and bad D? It's still early but he needs to start hitting. As for Franklin, he is a guy 29 other teams didn't want. And while position flexibility is nice, it's only nice if he can actually field. Which he can't. I'm not going to get bent out of shape for a 25th man on a 2-5 team.
  9. That's the issue with Davies. If he isn't getting that call like the 3rd strike to Arrietta, he isn't going to win many games.
  10. Listen to that crowd. It's got to be 80% Cubs fans.
  11. You know your team is not very interesting if you have a Franklin vs Scooter argument.
  12. Tank move. No way Goforth is one of our best 13 pitchers.
  13. They are definitely looking at Haders clock. No reason to leave him down if your best option is Milone.
  14. I still am not a fan of Puig for our needs but that said we will regret not trading Braun. He doesn't look like a guy who will ever be a 140 game guy again.
  15. I still don't get the issue with starting the clock on a pitcher especially for guys 23-25. What percentage of guys who come up to start ever get to FA as a reliable healthy consistent starter? The 23-25 year old guys are often at the cusp of their primes which often are ages 25-28. It's a very small percentage that don't fall by the wayside 6 years down the road as they reach 30. Hader is 23. Woodruff is 24. You avoid starting the clock on a guy like Ortiz, but not on Hader or Woodruff or Lopez. Starting the arby clock should only come into play for very young and extremely talented pitchers, and surefire core everyday players. Those instances are rare. The only guy whose clock matters is Hader. I'd have no problem bringing up Lopez and even Woodruff now if they are ready. I'm not as a big a clock watcher as others. Worst case scenario is they play so well that they are expensive. Well then you find the money because they are stars or you trade them a year before FA for a truckload of talent.
  16. Milone is the 6th starter on a very bad baseball team. If you go to most rotations and go 6 deep you'll find plenty of Milone types. He is cheap, doesn't start anyone's clock and isn't blocking anyone who could put this team in the play offs.
  17. Depth at the MLB level is irrelevant right now. The team isn't going to contend, so if they have to go with a DeJesus or a Franklin for 20 games, so be it. If you go with a 13 man staff, you arent going to have a big bench, so you have back up OF, C, PH type and INF, and manage the game enough to PH/Double switch when you need to and that's that. You worry about the rest of the schedule tomorrow if you have an injury because a loss today wont matter.
  18. Uecker did us no favors on that Braun call. I thought he had the HR. D'Oh
  19. Too bad. That was a nice outing by Anderson too. Of course, when the pitching is there, the offense isn't. That's baseball for ya.
  20. Great game yesterday. I only saw a few innings but Wily looked tremendous out there, and the offense once again scored 5 or more runs. With any kind of pitching and defense, this team could be fun to watch.
  21. Thanks so much for putting these together! I cant wait for the farm teams to get rolling and find our next Braun and Prince.
  22. My thought process on this move in particular is that this guy isnt a very good player and being versatile doesnt matter if he can play a bunch of positions but none of them very well. As far as what he adds to the team, the answer is nothing Scooter wouldnt have added, and actually much less than what Scooter would have added. The issue though is like you say not worth much energy, as Franklin is just a 25th guy and this team is a bad so picking him up wont help but it wont hurt either.
  23. Versatility only matters if the player can play multiple positions well or at least adequately. Otherwise what is the point? This guy isn't much of a player, which is why he was available in the first place. Villar is technically our most versatile player FWIW
