Game 6: Lions @ Packers - Monday, October 14th 7:15PM

Fully agree with the Booger is bad, I posted in my first comments of the day. So glad I don't watch MNF other than Packers and that I mute it for over half the game, it was grating to listen to. At least they got rid of that sideline contraption he was floating around in last year. They have to change things up next year. though I am grateful for how clear he makes it on what type of ball they're using, what type of field they're on, what type players they are, what type of coach they are, and what type of team they are. Sometimes I'm very confused if the word Football isn't used 1/5 words. Someone should watch that game and count how many times he said it, heck of a job being clear for everyone. -

I think it's completely normal that when a 300 pound man is running full speed at me, pushes me back and has hand basically right at my chin for his head to be pushed back. He's off balance, guys hand is right under his chin, pushing/pulling his shoulder pads which might slide up and hit his helmet, basically everything is pushing him back, head could go too. This isn't at all like when an NBA player gets hit on the arm and flails his head back. Bottom line, some borderline calls go your way. Some don't. some games might weight differently one way or the other. Some early calls in a game might go against you but late ones for you, but late ones get the attention. Grand scheme of things they balance out over the long haul. Last night some borderline ones went the packers way late. I'll take it and remember it in a few weeks when they don't and not get too worked up either week, it's part of the game. Just like I didn't when they went against GB vs Philly. -

This is where I'm at with those calls. I noticed exactly this live when I was looking for justification...his hand was up there for a split second at most. Similar to if a tackler brushes his hand across a ball carriers facemask...by the letter of the law it's a penalty but really shouldn't be called. If they called every little nitpicky thing, there'd be a flag every play and that's no fun. And that was only one of the two bad hands to the face penalties. The other one there was nothing. The only way we have any justification is if it's illegal to grab the inside of a guys shoulder pad. I'm no rule expert, but I highly doubt doing so is a penalty. We got lucky, I would be absolutely livid if I was a Lions fan right now. The Packers have 3 legit wins and 2 ref aided wins this year, facts are 5-1 though. The Lazard catch, that pylon cam shows his knee hit at the half yardline or whatever...but I wasn't 100% sure he had control of the ball until he was in the end zone. It looked like he bobbled it a bit after he hit the ground...but the ball never hit the ground so it's whatever. I don't see any way that was getting overturned...and that's not the story of the game anyway. It's those 2 "penalties". I'd be near positive what he did there is defensive holding by the letter of the law. Usually only gets called if it's impeding an OL from like sliding off and picking up a stunt or another guy, but the act is the same thing. And I'd say it's justified to call on a play like this as it is gaining the DL an advantage, if he doesn't grab and hold then his hand would slide up into the face and be a penalty, doing it this way gives him control of the OLs movement, which is exactly what the rule is trying to prevent -

Its more an answer to those people are are trying to say the refs handed the Packers the game. No, they didn't. The refs call it like they see it on the field. Were some of the calls borderline bad? Yep, probably. But the refs didn't lose the game for the Lions. The Lions could have stomped the throat of the Packers in the first quarter, but instead settled for field goals. They could have came out in the second half more aggressively, but instead gained 58 yards the whole half. Anyone trying to justify that the refs handed that game to the Packers is probably off base. The Lions did a remarkable job of handing that game to the Packers. Because the Lions just are not a very good team. especially the last one. They were kicking the winning FG anyway. It cost Det a chance to go about 50 yards in like a minute with no timeouts. But the obsession on these while ignoring the free 7 pts Det got earlier somewhat reminds me of how everyone freaked out on the blown PI in the Rams/Saints game last year but ignored the botched call that helped the Saints a few possessions earlier. Top of my head, I think it made Rams kick FG instead of getting first and goal from really close and a likely TD. I don't recall exactly what it was. I overall agree that obsessing on all this is too much, it happens. These calls are tough to make split second heat of the moment, some go your way some don't. Packers have certainly had their share go against them, like in the Eagles game, this week these calls late went their way. Take it and go on. Also, I don't think Bahk is flopping. He was pushed back, it was just maybe not done the way the refs thought it was done -

All the talk is going to be on the hands to face penalties. While I agree they were incorrect. First, I'd say you can totally see how the refs would think it was without the benefit of slow mo camera, Booger's screaming doesn't change the fact they have to see this in a split second from 15 yards away with no replay. Second, by the letter of the law that's probably technically defensive holding then if not hands to the face, if we're gonna get real anal on things. Another thing that will be missed while everyone obsesses on that is that Det was gifted a free TD earlier in the game when every ref at the LOS and close to the play called down and a guy late comes running in and somehow overrides all of them. My opinion is that he was likely down short, but whichever way that was called was going to stand and should not have been overturned. How3-4 guys call down who were closer get overridden by a guy way on the bottom after the play I have no idea. The Pack TD you guys are analyzing here IMO was ruled that way because he didn't have full possessioni until in the end zone. I thought that was fairly clear and not sure how you got pages of arguing about it. Lastly, I have no idea how Booger has that job. I give credit for his energy, and I can tell he has put in the prep work beforehand. But his voice is grating, and he made several absolutely terrible points or babbles that made no sense. Most important thing though is that he's like the Stephen A of game announcing, like why does everything have to said in a shouting manner. Most laughable thing to me was his rant about how Det coaches with the NE ties so they game plan week to week, they analyze other teams strengths and weaknesses and then make a gameplan accordingly. All other coaches watching had to be like huh, wonder why we never thought of that. Glad I never watch MNF besides the Packers and that I put it on silent for over half the game. -
Guess that means no College Gameday then? Isn't that always the primetime game? No, that's not true. It's not always a primetime game and it's not always an ABC/ESPN game. They genuinely do their best to go to the biggest game of the week while weighing against likely other upcoming big games they'll be at and locations they've already been this year. For example, in that week there is Auburn at LSU. You can likely rule that out due to them just being at LSU last week, plus the following week will have LSU at Bama. So it'll be our game or ND @ Mich. I'd be really surprised if they didn't go with UW/OSU (especially if we assume Mich loses to PSU this week), but they could factor in that PSU will be at OSU a few weeks later and there aren't really any other big games that week so they're risking doubling up on @OSU. They also know they have OSU@Michigan later on too, so might not want to use up Michigan either, though one would assume Gameday is already planned for Bama/Auburn that week, better weather and of course should be huge game in itself. To the "we can't hang with OSU" discussion. I don't think anyone was disagreeing they're a hurdle, better than us, or that we usually lose. It was your insinuation that we get ran out of the building by them like we can't even compete. That has happened once. Again, eliminating last year's weirdness and this team for supposedly being so overwhelmed and unable to handle the athletes and speeds of the better recruited blue blood programs they have only lost by more than 10 points twice in about 8 years. While beating the likes of LSU, Auburn, USC, Miami. They were down to Bama by 7 at halftime. Went to wire with LSU, and to the wire in all Rose Bowls, and South Carolina, and to the wire with OSU several times. You might recall last time OSU came to UW we were ahead the whole game and ended up losing in OT.
-
Being that I'm going to the game it's annoying to not have the whole day leading up to it. But, for winning the game it's probably best to be at noon, any little bit can help.
-
Yea your memory of PSU seems way off to me. UW was up like 28-7 in that game and should've rolled. Blew it in the 2nd half. That's far from being run out of the stadium as you imply. I know everyone else has pointed the same in recent posts but UW has hung with everyone quite well over the years. Take out last year's weird flop of a year that included some blowout losses and since roughly 2010 their only losses above 10 points were the 59-0 game and Bama. They usually hang with OSU, they've beaten SEC teams in recent bowl games, they beat USC in a recent bowl game. All that said, I'm convinced on OSU this year and I don't think we're beating them.
-
First, I'd doubt they win 8 in a row if he'd stayed. Besides the tensions and all that which comes with it him leaving made them add to the team and then he came back and made their second team unbeatable. Essentially to replace MJ they brought in All Star Harper and Kukoc. Then added MJ back in, then got Rodman. That second squad was as lopsided of a team than any of the superstar teams like GSW that everyone has complained about the last few years. Basically just saying I'm not sure all those moves happen if he doesn't leave so it would made every year more and more vulnerable. Then you gotta wonder if maybe he and Pippen have a falling out at some point through it all. Plus, as is often forgotten in this discussion they got beat with him that year he came back. I know that sounds like me being a hater on MJ, but I would still rank him probably slightly best player ever over LBJ. IMO Gretzky is clearly the major sport athlete far and away better than his peers. MJ gets talked about like that but I don't think the gap between him and LBJ (I mean there is a legitimate debate between MJ/LBJ just for #1), Magic, Kareem, Bird etc is anywhere close to the gap between Gretzky and others. Take a look at the hockey stats sometime, he has something like 50% more points than anyone else.
-
Some examples came up in the Dallas Packers game. Pack had that lead and Dallas was chasing. Packers had the ball in the 5-3ish minute timeframe and Dallas sat on their TOs while we ran it down to a couple seconds each time so they could hold the timeouts for when they had the ball later. There is no scenario that not calling the TOs while GB has the ball and is running the full 40 that you could save more time with. Seems so common sense, but in their head it's we need the TO to run the kicker out if needed. Well, you'd have 40 more seconds to work with if you used it on D.
-
And somehow that Phils team didn't win a WS with all those guys. The year they won they only had Hamels. Then added all those other guys in Halladay, Lee, Oswalt and didn't win another. Not unlike the Nats and Dodgers of the last 7ish years.
-
I don't recall if I mentioned in here or not but don't sleep on Angels with Cole either. He's from that area of LA and grew up a fan, they have to try to win with Trout, Pujols money only has I think 2 years left. Their weakness is pitching, add in Cole and Ohtani next year and that's a huge improvement on that end. Dodgers though do have a bunch of dead money falling off this year, I think, don't hold me to that. And I think managed to get under the Tax this year to reset. So I'd expect a bidding war on Cole. But I'd still pick Houston to re-sign if I had to choose. They're a huge city too and currently only have to pay one of their position player studs real money in Altuve. They should be able to pony up the money to keep this going. If they were concerned on money they shouldn't have gotten Greinke and devoted that money to resigning Cole.
-
I really don't have anywhere near that concern for a rib injury. Just get him healthy by December and it won't matter unless Hill gets hurt too. If Giannis doesn't get hurt there is no way they shouldn't be a top 2 seed, even if Bledsoe tore his ACL today. I suppose if like multiple major guys got hurt, yea ok, but not just one. I could see if it was a hammy tear or something as those linger forever, but a rib. Even if 3 weeks turns into 6 it's no big deal at this point of the season. Just remember last year Brogdon missed much more time late in the season and they didn't miss a beat, and the team is even deeper now. This team is like 14 deep with high quality players. Unlike anything we've ever experienced as Bucks fans.
-
Generally agree with your notion that PG is thin overall. But, this is the best time for the injury to happen as everyone else is currently healthy. Plus, it'll really only be the first week or two of the season. And in the Bucks situation, all that matters is playoffs anyway. With how much Giannis initiates they should be more than capable of handling this loss for a bit. Plus guys like KM, Divincenzo, Mathews. But, to your point, if all you have is 34ish year old George Hill your depth is at risk at that position. Guys like DD, Pat, maybe Wes at times can defend PGs on D for small stretches when Hill is resting.

Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2019 - 20: BIG TEN CHAMPS & BPI NCAA Champs!
tmwiese55 replied to homer's topic in Other Sports
If the media went nuts with the Uthoff transfer stuff I cant believe they are not going crazy about this. Funny that Uthoff media blitz is exactly what went through my head when I typed that, like minds and all I guess On a side note of another UW example that got screwed. Remember Andy Van Vleet, the kid from Europe that ended up flopping for us anyway? He was denied a year of eligibility because he re-took classes while in school in Europe in order to get into UW. Basically, his grades weren't good enough for UW in certain classes and would be denied. So, he retakes them to improve them and then gets denied a year of eligibility for it. Another example of actually caring about academics being punished. -

I'm going to laugh so hard when Hauser gets OKd to play at MSU this year but Potter didn't. I believe I saw a kid from Kansas played like 28 games last year and got OKd to play elsewhere this year. Then don't even get into how they let all the QBs transfer all over and play right away. The key seems to be playing for a blue blood name program in either sport. Really what they should do is a media blitz on this and shame the NCAA until they cave. Jay Bilas would be 100% on their side, get on a few ESPN shows, Rome, etc. The public sentiment is so anti NCAA right now that the media people would eat it up. But, we know Barry is basically part of the system and isn't going to rock the boat -
Yea my most profitable area has been 1Hs for sure. Catching Unders due to weather situations is a good one too. But as long as you keep everything in reason and not at prices that you just shouldn't be betting and just view it as entertainment and just for fun then what's the harm. It's like anything else people do for fun, movies, dinners, shows, etc. I also agree on small school stuff, when MACtion starts later this year I've done shockingly well over the years, one year was like 17 straight on those games and O/Us. I'd just look at both teams normal scores, do some simple math and a lot of times be shocked at the line being off a bunch, and it usually worked. I didn't bet at all last season though on anything, I wouldn't have started again if it not being legalized in Iowa. NFL just seems impossible to me, so much attention on those lines it's tough to beat them, as you point out. I'm at 24-14 on any normal straight odds bet so far which is 63%. Take out NFL and I'm sure that would go up, hindsight I should've separated those in the data but at this point I'm basically going to quit NFL other than a few dollars on a parlay hoping to get lucky. I just don't enjoy watching NFL anyway. ETA: Got Yanks at +320 for the WS last night. Great price, though of course I realize Houston is stacked.

Is it time to consider moving Hader
tmwiese55 replied to brewers888's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
More I think of this LAD scenario I really think Seger would be the one they're willing to part with, not Lux. Seger with two years of control for Hader straight up? I think LAD should kick in something more in that scenario due to the lack of control. But, if I'm MKE I try to buyout like two years of FA right after the trade as well. Having had a major injury hopefully Seger is willing to put some good money in the bank. -
Agree with your LAD take. They pretty much haven't one since I was too young to remember. They're extremely well run and I kind of feel bad for Kershaw at this point. Crazy in this 8ish year run they haven't gotten one. I'd have been fine with it. Funny how what every jabroni like us on the internet said at the deadline ended up being true though with their pen, can't believe they didn't do anything to help it out

tmwiese55 replied to brewers888's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I think Lax straight up would do it for me. But sure, if you can get Bellinger and Buehler and Smith while you're at it, why not. -
The depth on this team is something we've never seen before. Just think, 2 years ago we're playing guys like Liggins and Gary Payton JR, and starting them some games. Guys who basically haven't gotten real NBA minutes since. Now, our end of the bench guys could legit be starting in the league. Should be a recipe for a breeze of a regular season as long as Giannis doesn't get hurt. Final four level of playoffs will be the real test again.

Well, the most common response to the "Redskins" name among Native Americans, per NBC sports reporting on a Washington Post poll from this past August, is... "Proud." https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/10/poll-of-native-americans-view-of-redskins-name-finds-proud-most-common-answer/ Tracks with results from a 2016 poll showing 90 percent support for the name. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/05/19/dan-snyder-gratified-by-native-american-support-for-redskins/ The term in itself is indisputably racist. It's the equivalent of the N bomb for that group of people. A term like Brave or Chief in itself doesn't seem like it would be as you could be taking honor in the bravery of those people, think of it on par with something like Spartans in that sense. It would become racist/demeaning if you then start making a mockery of them with negative stereotypes and caricatures, which is where the chop discussion comes into it.
-
I can't believe someone thinks this mattered in this game at all when they got pounced on in 1st inning. I guess I could see someone arguing if it got to late game in a crunch situation but couldn't do it and then gave up some runs. I wouldn't agree, but I'd get the discussion. In this case, the game was over before it started. My gut has also had me think the actual chop stuff isn't inherently racist/demeaning, but I also admit to not being informed or having read up on the history or anything so more than open to the other view on it if I knew more info. The name Redskins on the other, clearly. I've also thought that an owner like Dan Snider who is publicly hated and a terrible owner would wisen up enough to get an easy PR win by changing the name and he still hasn't done it. Just seems like such an easy move
-
Yea I thought the same thing. He's warmed up and all so might as well pitch 1-2 but if you pull him then he could probably go in game 2.
