  1. And, this is my biggest concern. As much as I hate the Cubs - and want to see us win as many games as possible from them, I'd almost rather see us lose 3/4 this weekend than to split this series. Splitting this series will do nothing for us. Yes, we'll have a very small percentage of hope remaining, but I just don't see any way we are going to make up 4 games with 20 games to play, especially when none of those remaining games are against the Cubs. As others have already noted - our season basically comes down to these 4 games this weekend. Need to win 3/4 to keep hope alive. Anything less than that, and you can stick a fork in this season. Well I've been looking at it for a few weeks now from the "just keep alive for a few more weeks to keep us entertained" type of view. So at least getting the 2 keeps it alive a bit longer, which I'm all for. Sure, football is here but it's still not something to watch every day. Just keep hanging around, all of a sudden win 4-5 in a row and who knows. Note, I mostly have that type of view for a while as it's pretty clear they have next to no chance to win it all this year. So hey, just keep us entertained a while longer. Last year, you knew if they got in they could win it.
  2. Lyles and Houser have been good. Our bullpen has stabilized. But 3/5 of our starters have been a mess. Our pitching in August was bad. Not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing. I just looked and our pitching in August gave up the highest OPS it has all year.
  3. Can we please stop putting too much stock into small samples and sweeping judgments and overreactions on a game by game basis.
  4. Yea I was very surprised when I saw the numbers. Someone told me 50 is guaranteed too. So, Zeke did very well for himself imo. Kinda surprised they caved that much for an RB. I'd guess he's cut after 3-4 years and all he gets is that 50 mil, but still for an RB he did very well. I don't think Melvin is getting anything like that and is probably in for a rude awakening but we'll see
  5. It's just as likely he'll have 2-3 bad starts to finish and this is all moot. Hope he keeps doing well but locking yourself into a 3 year deal with someone with his track record based on 7 good games is probably not wise and not needed based on market. Very unlikely teams are going to be beating down his door to hand him 3 year guaranteed deals of any substantial money. Something for next year and some team friendly options, sure you can probably talk. Same with Pomeranz and at least he has a fairly good track record to go off.
  6. With their relationship would it really be all that surprising if MKE worked something out for him now that would essentially be for next year and leave him shut down this year? I assume that would be legal. To me he'd still be a great bounceback option but I get not paying that option.
  7. Wow, another cringeworthy hot take. I'm shocked. Sure would be nice to see some good outings from Burnes to feel better about him next year in a big role. His stuff is too good not to make something out of him. Call me crazy, but I'd like to see more than two pitches thrown.
  8. y'all? UGH! You expressed your dislike of a made up word by using another made up word, haha. This topic got brought up in the last few months ago and then got to the WI phrase "yous". As in, "Yous guys goin to da game dis afternoon". Never really thought about it before but at least Y'all has meaning in the combining of you and all. "Yous" really makes no sense
  9. RHP on Sunday so if Moose is still out I'd assume Shaw is up for that game. Kind of pointless to bring him up now to face lefties the next two days
  10. Agreed. The D Line was all new players after losing so many experienced players, plus it got big time injured. there's a trickle down effect that comes from that which hurts all levels of D. My biggest is also the pass rush OLBs. They've had beast there for years with Van Ginkel being the last one. Will new ones step up? They seem to be really hyping that Green-May kid. I was never too sure at his size if he'd be D Line or OLB. So hopefully at his size he still has the speed to really get after it OLB like the Watts, Biegels, Ginkles, Jacobs, etc have done for years. Check out the defensive depth chart though. Only two SR starters and only two others in the two deep. And no one I'd project to leave early. Tons of FR/SO starting. Hopefully D is solid this year but could be really special in the next few years if things go their way. Definitely want to see things back to the heavy heavy blitzing that seemed to go down last year. I assume they just tried to play more conservative due to all the injuries.
  11. Wasn't he a relief ace after his last outing? Once again, another lesson in not overdoing in game by game or small samples. Just relax sometimes.
  12. Since ya'll mentioned this I looked at his game log. Oddly he faced MKE 3 times in a row in June. Looks like 2 then a DL stint and another. 6 inning for 4 Runs. 3 for 3 runs then three weeks later 6 for 3 runs. So with that much time on him yea maybe they found something.
  13. Yea I've thought that since his date got bumped to mid August. If they're in it then I'm sure they'll find a way to use him. But if with 2 weeks to go they're say 5ish out of the WC they might just say call it a year and get ready for next year. I have no reason to believe they don't think he'll be ready, it's just more of an if the teams out of it type thing for me. I'd call that possibility significant at this point, probably below 50% but still.
  14. Yea I realize that, I think I said at some point it did almost get them a title and his skillset balanced with our other hitters well. I was just saying MKE can't just do this over and over without it coming to kill them eventually. This one probably was about as smart as they could do a big contact and take the risk. First, 17 mil isn't thaaaat much, that it was the exact fit they needed, 5 years not 7. Still, would've loved 4 years on it. But just saying, do this, do Darvish, do Kimbrell, Alex Cobb, etc and all of a sudden you're boned. Have to try and pick your spots as best as possible, they tried that here and 2/5 of the way through and we're still worried. Like this year, say Mark says we can go to 140ish mil and Kimbrell is sitting there you can't just do it because you have the money, have to be wise about and hold off due to the multiple years at the end that are likely going to kill you.
  15. With 3 years left this definitely has the possibility of being a pumpkin. Hated that 5th year from the beginning. This should also be a lesson to the crowd that screams we have to spend big money, need to sign all these FAs and get our payroll up a big portion. We did it, and two years later we want out. Many big contracts signed in FA have albatross back ends. So you shouldn't spend just to spend in the short term, in our situation you have to make smart moves as clunkers will kill us.
  16. It's just crazy that a week or so back GM is on hot seat due to how awful he constructed the team and pitching, now all of a sudden they have the best staff in the NL outside of LAD. Heck, with Jansen falling apart maybe we're actually better than them too. Speaking of Jansen, seems LAD really should be kicking themselves for not upgrading the pen. In spite of how loaded their team is they have a massive achilles heal right now and it was one that everyone could see coming before the deadline, especially if you have Jansen in fantasy. Wonder what Pit was demanding for Vasquez, I'd assume Pit wouldn't budge if they didn't give the AAA SS prospect.
  17. I would no way take our staff over Nats and Mets. Pretty sure I wouldn't over the others but at least could see discussion so don't want to say anything. NAts and Mets though I wouldn't think twice.
  18. Yea it's not lost yet. Of course last year they'd have no shot only being 4 over. But this year it's still right there for the taking if they can through this last week or so of tough games still within just a few games any playoff spot. Get 2/3 this weekend would be a nice start.
  19. Yup, I acknowledged I read too much into the initial post and HT's probably added to me taking it that way. No worries, I get what you mean. I'm still a bit worried about the team but with all the reports and info I'm seeing I'm starting to get cautiously optimistic that Coan is going to be good/fine or at least an improvement to Horni thus hopefully fixing or improving our blah offense (relative to previous) of the last few years since PC came back. Still in kind of believe it when I see it type mode but starting to feel better than I did 3 months ago. At least only another day to see. Spread down to 11.5. I think it was 14ish the last I looked a week or so back, but I could be remembering wrong. Think comfortable to bet UW on that but no way I'd call it a lock.
  20. No, it doesn't. They have an $18M all-star catcher that is still doing his job well and a back up in Pina that has been mashing for a month or so, including against LHP. So? The struggles against LHP have been definitely well established, and carrying a 3rd catcher isn't unprecedented. We carried Aguilar throughout much of this year as a backup 1B only guy. Freitas can play 1B, so it's not like it's impossible to have made room for him. If Freitas comes up and mashes LH pitching in September, (again huge if, this is hypothetical), I think questions regarding him would certainly be valid. Where were they supposed to play him though? I mean it's tough to rip the GM for playing our AS 1B from last year and once he pulled the plug on that Pina/Grandal have been doing great. And in the NL you'd have 4 guys who can really only play 2 spots. We all didn't like that aspect of our construction when we had Jesus so once Jesus was out I don't think it would've made sense to repeat it.
  21. 250/320ish should be right around the entire BA and OBP of the whole league. That's what I was going off. Just checked and it's 253/323. Yea I don't know how that goes for CF specifically but I was just saying he's literally right in the same ballpark as the league average. ETA: Quick dig on CF and he's 14th in OPS. Can't see a way that averages on this site but if he's 14th he's probably right around league average. And that's with him being so far off this year. Just small improvement up to 750 OPS would put him top 8. ETA: Also found his RISP info. This year bad 233/314/644 in a whopping 120 PA. Last year was 806 and career 780 OPSs. His high contact approach is fine for RISP, he's obviously had a bad year but should be careful to overly weigh a specific small sample thing that is fluky player to player every year.
  22. Yup, for sure it's a risk/gamble like I said. But it's also why it's very unlikely anyone is going to take on that contract. Also why I really kind of gritted my teeth when we signed him to begin with. Remember he's always been a bit injury prone. Buuut, it did almost win them a WS last year so can't be too upset about it. and remember the goal was to counter our free swingers with a contact guy, which obviously you're all about
  23. Yea what a crazy year it's been for him. Glad we're getting the good end of it. I never saw this coming, I thought a multi inning relief guy and was fine with it as I didn't want to 'go for it' at this deadline. I think I phrased poorly but I just meant imagine if he had that June/July stretch for us and how prone some folks are to massive sweeping judgments based of small samples. Same folks saying how this guy has all of a sudden figured it out would've been saying this guy is atrocious and has no space on an MLB roster merely 6 weeks ago if they'd have been watching every day and subsequently that Stearns needs to be on the hot seat for having him
  24. Grandal has a near 400 OBP in the major league level over the last month yet you're demanding he be benched as he's not doing good enough. Pina has a near 1.000 OPS at the MLB level this year. If Freitas could play SS, 3B or OF then sure he could help vs lefties. Otherwise the two guys playing there are doing great. That's why there is no problem to be fixed at these spots. Stearns axed Aguilar and replaced him with Grandals 875 vs lefties, he fixed it already. Basically everything you're screaming here could've been said about Saladino to replace Arcia as well and we saw how that worked. Except at least in that case Arcia can't hit whereas the two guys you're trying to replace are doing great.
  25. Yea I'd definitely want him back but I doubt this guy is getting anything guaranteed beyond one year. Maybe a team option after or something if he finishes strong. I just don't think the market for him would be that strong so you're bidding against yourself. But I for sure wouldn't be doing it now when you still have another month of sample to see how he does. If he returns to his normal form over the next 5 starts well then he'll be exactly what he's been his whole career. Very few guys miraculously find it his age and after this much time of not being good. Conversely, could you imagine the bashing this guy would've gotten by some folks here after the stretch he had with Pit before we acquired him? It would've been a Stearns fireable offense that he was being trouted out there every start.
