  1. Yea it's nitpicking on words like 'abysmal' and 'awful'. Words like that are too much imo as I said, even with how bad he's been he's still league average on O while gold glove on D. Yea I'd agree for sure his return to being decent doesn't for sure mean that he's not washed up but it's definitely a good sign. One could just as easily argue the 3 months earlier this year while injured is actually the small sample fluke when you have a track record as big as his. This isn't like Arcia at all who's never shown to be a good hitter. Under one year ago Cain was near MVP level, it's very rare to lose it that quickly. To me the biggest concern isn't that he all of a sudden lost it, it would be that the thumb injury thing is actually a huge deal and could kill his career. But the treatment Braun got seems to have fixed Braun and since Cain got it he's been back to being fine again.
  2. In AAA. Soooo 4 guys to play 2 positions. you're trying to fix the problem of the guys hitting 997 and 875 at the MLB. You're trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist because of on infatuation with AAA numbers. If Freitas can play SS or maybe 3B then sure but he's 1B and C as far as I know and you already have 3 guys at that spot doing perfectly fine. Perez adds being able to play strong defense at any spot on the field except C. And we are in the NL so that matters.
  3. Again, Cain has been perfectly fine 6ish weeks now. This is abysmal type bashing is overboard. Even with how awful he was the first half he's still at 255/320ish. Yea definitely not good for the year but it's still basic competency league average. The thing is that when you have someone with his massive track record who just last year was a top 5 MVP type in the 300/400 range and has an injury plagued few months and then gets time off to get healthy, then starts getting back to the same ballpark of numbers as last year that there is a good chance he's not done/washed up yet. I'd simply gamble on the bounceback rather than paying out half his contract to not play here. Will he be 300/400 again? Not likely, but barring injury 250/320 won't happen either. But put him somewhere in the middle and with his D and his contract is fine and then re-assess again next year. Again, if someone were to fully take it off your hands I think you do it. BUt I see no way that happens and if I'm paying half the money of his contract anyway I'd rather gamble on the bounceback.
  4. The beauty of this Lyles becoming a solid starter before our eyes, is that Stearns predicted this before anyone else did. So I trust he’ll know what to do with Lyles moving forward. Trade deadline deals looking better every 5 days, and Pomeranz is looking like he’s gonna really help the pen these last 29 games, and maybe Black will too. But Stearns is an idiot isn't he? Stearns let the guy go rather than pay the whatever it was 3ish mil to keep him but now he's gonna give him 6 mil per year based on 6 starts. You can keep pounding this all you want but it's almost for sure not going to happen and Lyles is very unlikely to be a sub 4 ERA starting P if he pitches the whole year. The evidence is based on 900 innings of pitching that's resulted in a 5.2 ERA. Even in his current breakout year that warrants a multi year extension he has a 4.5 ERA with nothing special on peripherals.
  5. The number one complaint is not carrying 3 catchers and a catcher to mash LHP when Manny has a .997 OPS vs Lefties. I guess it's not a .530 OBP though. Also, Grandal has an .875 OPS vs Lefties. Unless Freitas can play SS he really didn't have a spot on the team. You can probably squint your eyes and find a spot for him once Jesus was traded but then future league MVP Grisham probably does not have had a spot. Bad roster management would've been carrying 5 guys limited to C/1B when only two can play a day. But continue how Stearns is an idiot for it.
  6. The guy has been basically given away by 3 teams in the last 12 months. Three year double digit deal seems like a big stretch based on 6ish games. There is a more than healthy chance he gets beat up in 3 of his next 4 starts and this discussion is dead. This same logic would have us still having Taylor Jungmann under contract at 5ish mil per year.
  7. Nah, if in those 3 games Thames gets like 7 hits and 3 HRs I'd get him locked in. Guerra looks like he did today you might as well get that too. If Gio shuts them down, I'd do that too as we need a Cubs killer.
  8. Sweep the Cubs and we're looking strong again. Extensions for everyone.
  9. I bet PItt really wishes they gave him a 2-3 year guaranteed deal after his hot start to the year.
  10. OK since it's that important I looked and the article came out March 22 2012, preseason 2012. Harvey went to the bigs at the end of July 2012. He was even specifically mentioned in the article. so he counts. Yes, Wheeler was on track to be ace and had two seasons of that in the bigs before TJ. Two season of low to mid 3 ERAs by age 24 with his build, velocity and stuff is exactly what would be called Ace. Matz, yes that was hyperbole and oversimplifying. Syndegaard was acquired after that season, that's why I said one or the other would count depending on when it came out. Turns out it came out preseason so Harvey counts. And again, I never once refuted or argued with why or how they came to those ratings.
  11. the hits just keep on coming, 3 year deals based off 6 games hot streaks.
  12. If those guys stay healthy and avoid drastic negative regression, that's a playoff rotation in my mind. Of course, as we have seen this year, that is far from probable. Lyles is certainly playing his way into a job next year. But man it still is tough to really bank on him in a big way or consider him core for a playoff team. Rewind a month when we got him and who would've thought anything like this. Not trying to rip him or anything, as we've seen first hand the last two years depth is needed and he seems to have something to offer in some way. Those 5 guys with Burnes, Peralta, Suter, Gio or maybe a couple others going in/out due to injury and performance should be a competent rotation. But we all thought the same this year too so...
  13. Yea that's for sure. And he's still King at huge percent. With such a short compact swing it's surprising he's always struck out quite a bit. I'm sure there is some pitcher adjustments coming to against him, but imagine once he gets comfortable and the K percent drops from 30% down to just a normal high number like 20%.
  14. I've thought it was dumb pretty much my whole life. So generally I agree even though I know it was crucial to what MKE did last year and an area in general that could help a small market team cover for their inability to buy pitching. So it somewhat hurts us but the principle of it has always been dumb to me. ETA: I've basically thought the same thing on having different sets of rules for half the league.
  15. Gamel has started 54 games this year, plus the 15ish Grisham has and even some Thames starts. So that's over 70 with over a month to go and Braun being healthy all year. MKE needs four OFs and they're all going to play a lot. Braun goes down for 6 weeks and Grisham just takes the job then so be it. They're very proactive with how much Braun sits and with Cain's physical style and age they should start doing the same with him. The backup can easily get to 3-4 starts a week and then of course plays every day for any DL stints. Plus of course Braun should put in time at 1B again to get some starts there vs lefties over Thames and if Thames needs a DL stint, which could free up even more OF starts. This is once again just being too extreme.
  16. Baseball is funny. we'll lose the two games that seemed winnable and win the one we shouldn't. Gotta love trying to argue that the 23 year old with a 3.3 ERA last year and 3.3 this year and only 9 runs given up in his last 10 starts isn't good, and will use a one game sample to try and prove it.
  17. He’s not THAT good. We’ve hit him hard early this year already. Look at his post all-star break number. Spoiler, ERA starts with 0. How are his AAA numbers though this year?
  18. "Trade Hader without doubt", there could be no reasonable discussion on the subject huh? and yes I believe even kicking in 6 mil does nothing to move Cain's trade value. 3/47 isn't really different than 3/53 imo. Once again, he's been a good player since getting healthier and the thumb injection. Maybe best route could be to get a good year out of him to rebound his value and then his contract is down to like 2/30ish and try to kind of sell high after next year if possible. Leaves some gaping holes in the OF but lots of money freed up to try something aggressive.
  19. "Second best odds would be that they sign...another player(s) of Cain's age/risk stature with the money." yup, I've thought the exact same thing but avoided pointing it out to avoid the subsequent argument. Heck, it might even lead to a worse and longer contract for all we know. It's just not as simple as take 17 mil and sign X pitcher with it.
  20. If someone took the contract straight up I bet he'd do it, but I also don't see anyone taking that contract or even that anyone would be even close to taking it. I really think it's as simple as no one will take the contract combined with that he's actually been fine the last 6 weeks or so after getting healthier and the thumb injection so they'll just roll that into next year. If he plays like he has been the last 6 or so weeks he's perfectly fine. One thing I'd be all about if I was them is more days off for him and pressure him to cut out the tough guy stuff of playing through everything every day. If you got drilled in the hand and dove and bruised your knee the same game, just take the next day off, it's fine.
  21. Someone help me understand the Freitas love around here? I see a 30 year old minor league journeyman catcher. He's been in AAA with 6 different organizations: Oakland, Baltimore, Cubs, Atlanta, Seattle, and Milwaukee. When he has gotten the call to the major leagues, he couldn't hit a lick in limited at bats .214/.270/.313. He was made available in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft once, he's been released once, and placed on waivers once. I get that he's on the 40 man roster so its easy to call him up and have a 3rd catcher for September, but am I missing something that this is a player who is supposed to have future potential?? It's making too big a deal of AAA stats. Hey, don't get me wrong I hope he comes up and hits well. But chances are very low he puts up anything resembling his AAA line.
  22. I really don't know why you're nitpicking it so much on the Mets. Harvey or Synd whichever counts at time of list, Degrom, Wheeler, Matz. I guess it was hyperbolic a bit to include Matz as Ace as he never lived up to the potential, other than coming up and putting up a low 3s ERA in his first or second year. Wheeler had TJ but was ace level track his first two years, sooo 3 Aces and one who didn't quite do it. Pretty close imo, sorry I didn't specify down to Matz. All of this does is really show the whole point that you don't really know for sure on all this stuff, not even the best predictors hit at a high %. All I said was I surprised to see those two teams ranked that low, sorry if that was offensive.
  23. Seems we may have read to much into the abrupt (can't think of better word) type tone of the initial post and took it imply more than you meant, no worries. Note, I would actually say this was likely a big part for Mertz too. Yea he could've taken offers from anyone but he knows each one of them is bringing in another top ranked guy each year. WI, probably not so much so he knows he's going to be here for 4-5 years as opposed to potentially having to transfer and all that BS
  24. Yea spinning it that way is just negative imo. So, if he picks the big name schools it 'see we can't hang with the big boys', if he picks us 'well it's more PT because the others have better players'. Can't win. Don't get me wrong, path to playing time is often a part of any recruits choice but to immediately spin it negatively seems a bit much. It's essentially on the staff to sell them on why UW is a better fit, in a situation like this I would think they could play that card well since Ferguson will be almost done. So they did exactly what they're supposed to do. Plus as the last post shows, if you're a TE Wisconsin should be a very good spot to to set yourself up for the NFL as we use a pro style offense, feature the TE, and have had multiple TEs with success recently in the NFL.
