  1. I agree. The hyperbole is talking like it's a fireable offense and worst blunders in history type thing. Maybe I'm using hyperbole a touch wrong but I think you know what I mean in general, the general over-dramatization and exaggeration to make the point. It seems every day someone basically says something in his lineup is absolutely dumb, so the one today doesn't really stand out. Whatever, it's not a big deal.
  2. I'd assume Jeffress is off limits tonight too so he can go 2 innings tomorrow
  3. very confused there. If you look at with the challenge it was pretty clearly fair. I mean you could see chalk. Not sure how they don't overturn if allow to look at it...whatever he got walked anyway. Cost them a base though
  4. Hey I said I agreed, just that ya'll might be being a little too extreme on it. a bit too much hyperbole...and have to keep in mind we're not privy to nagging injuries and such. Like with santana yesterday
  5. Jeez guys, maybe chill a bit on Vogt. I get your points and generally agree. But you're talking like this is a fire-able offense or dumbest thing ever in baseball. Catchers need days off, yea he's probably doing it too much but no one plays one C every day. And as far as WAR, he's clearly an upgrade to Bandy who would be his 'replacement'. He's in a slump but just hit a big 2 R homer a couple days ago. Team history type blunder, question his ability as manager, etc is just a tad excessive imo. It's regular season game playing backup C, catchers get days off. I suppose those in a team history with so few playoff appearances so I guess...
  6. Doesn't fit the profile we're talking about here but would likely only be a 1 year deal, not a bad idea to fill in with Jimmy's situation, but Sabathia? He's been 'fine' the last two years. Quick glance it doesn't look like his advanced stats are great but he's also in an AL hitters park in a hitting division. IDK, maybe he'd welcome coming back for a cheap 1 for 5 mil type deal.
  7. I was very surprised to see Vogt is only 5/32 in September. Had it in my head that he's still been hitting well. He did hit 385 in August though. Still its the right lefty, I'm used to it.
  8. Thames has been on fire lately and he's not exactly slow or anything. No qualms with him up there. This is probably the exact lineup I'd roll with today.
  9. Good point. I see what you mean, he seems like hits to right a lot, but he only does it "a lot for a righty" if that makes sense. So it makes it a balanced spray chart and you wouldn't want to leave an IF gap on the left. the CF moved over and RF close to the line would make sense if the chars show it's mostly in the air and probably has stolen some hits this year compared to if it was 3-4 years ago before this became a huge thing. But yea I was just bringing up the idea for discussion, didn't really know much on it.
  10. Makes sense why basically he gets pounded low and outside. Too a certain extent I don't know why everyone doesn't get pitched that way since a hitter can only do so much, but it's clear that's the route on him. And that graph kind of shows this year's a bit of an anomaly for him there with how low those numbers are. however, I'd throw out the possibility that defensive position could be factoring in too? For example, the CF vs him these days plays fairly significantly over towards RF, I sat in RF this week and my friend and I commented on it. Off the top of my head IDK, but I'd assume the SS plays a bit more up the middle and 2B closer to 1B to cover that hole too?
  11. Any other comparable type guys people have their eyes on, guys undervalued a bit so their price tag isn't awful? Preferably in that age 28ish ballpark rather than the early 30s types that have gotten us in trouble. My quick googling didn't seem like a lot of options after him. Maybe Cobb but probably too expensive. Side note, I can't believe Mat Latos is only 29.
  12. He had about 2 weeks in early August where he was the only one hitting, I guess that would be carrying the team. I had him in fantasy and one of those weeks he hit something like 590. But yea the general numbers aren't there for the year so it's disappointing. But as several pointed out the bad luck stats all support that he's still a very good hitter, which supports the eye test too. Aside from the cold spell he just came out of he's just not a guy that pops the ball up or hits weak grounders, those few weeks though he looked really out of sorts. If healthy I don't think we'd really have too much to worry about with the contract as far as hitting goes, it's just that he's likely to miss 30+ games or more every year and will only get worse on D. DH can't come fast enough. For 3 years after this I'd have no concern that if healthy he'll put up respectable 265-290/ 345-375 type hitting lines, which yea aren't worth 20 mil on the bottom end but also isn't awful either like a Soriano was doing or what Pujols looks like now
  13. When healthy Braun is still probably one of the 15-20 best hitters in the world. I didn't sit down and make a list so don't nitpick that too much, but the point is he's still very good when healthy. Issue is simply his health and age going forward for an NL team. It's really that simple with him. Sure he's not what he was in 2011/12 but that's pretty rare for someone to maintain to his current age and it doesn't mean he still isn't darn good when healthy. The little cold spell starting in mid to late August is probably the worst he's ever looked though (other than when clearly hurt that year with the thumb), which was weird and a bit concerning. But as just posted above, he's bounced right back and has been scorching the ball again. Hope he keeps it up as it does wonders for the overall offense to have him producing well. Get one or two hot with him and the O won't be problem it was for a while, hopefully enough to get the to the playoffs. Thing I've been most impressed with by him the last few years is his adjustment as the pitchers have figured out it's pointless to pitch him inside. Around the thumb injury and 2013-14ish he was struggling to adjust to only getting pitched low and outside. He eventually figured it out and hits the ball opposite as hard as anyone can reasonably expect. Most HRs even come opposite for him now. I've seen some more national pub lately for finally going to the DH so maybe that ball will start rolling this offseason and get implemented by 2019 or 2020 to help out in his last few years as well.
  14. I would grant that the Pirates outs on the bases last night were gifts. But no way I'd call it laying down, in that they're trying to lose or anything. Just general lack of focus due to the games being meaningless. No one is going up there trying to make an out or intentionally throwing meatball pitches. Sitting injured players, playing youth for experience, combined with general slightly less intensity/focus and it gives the competitive teams an advantage right now. Also probably why the Cubs and Rox have been doing so well.
  15. We have a certain amount of posters who hate it when you question the manager, been that way throught the years with all our managers. I was on the Counsell bandwagon until about 1/4 through this season when I started to notice I was questioning his decision making......a LOT more than the previous season. I just don't think he is the guy to take us deep into the playoffs or be our guy in a world series appearance. Doesn't matter what I think though, Stearns and Attanasio seem positively enamoured with the guy... Yea I know we can all nitpick things, and I know we'd be able to in the next manager too. But big picture he's managed a team to massively overachieving this year, you're just not gonna push that guy out. Maybe in game stuff could be improved and I'm sure he's learning as he goes a bit, but he must be doing something right behind the scenes. The team is clearly motivated and the chemistry is great. That's a big part of the job too
  16. That explains it for today then. Thanks. Perez has been fine lately, nothing to be mad about. It's just been clear since the Villar CF day that it's been a push for Perez since then. I know they like to say he's the best OF on the team and overall good at D whatever the position, so that could be a part of it too after the Villar botched ball in CF to make D more of a priority.
  17. IDK, I'm not enjoying two bullpen days a week but that's just me. I get your point though and I generally prefer to own the future as well and roll young with those spots. Just think if Nelson is out a while going from 1 spot to figure out up to 2 (plus your #2 guy a rookie with 7 starts under his belt) makes a difference and I could see them (and I see the logic of it) in grabbing a guy like Chatwood. I don't want early to mid 30 yr olds though like the Suppans, etc. either though. All comes down to the price too. Someone said 3/24. That's much different than 4/40. If the market is just too stupid it makes the decision for them. Save the money and spend it on bullpen and hope the Jungmans/Wilkerson can eat a chunk of innings when someone gets hurt
  18. Their most beloved players has neck tats and has attacked and spit in umpires faces multiple times. Pujols is the 2nd worst offender in recent years of the HR stare/walk after Bonds. Yet they needed to drill Braun repeatedly for it. Love the Cards..
  19. We currently have 2 starters and a rookie in his 5th or so game who looks promising. I'm not sure we need to worry about having too many guys yet. If Nelson is out a significant chunk of next year it wouldn't surprise me if they grab someone like this as insurance. Management won't want to let the winning momentum of this year go away. If they're confident Nelson is back I think they just roll young. You'd have 3 seemingly set spots in Jimmy, Anderson, and Davies. Your 4th guys who it seems you can be reasonably comfortable with in Woodruff. Then have the Hader, Burns, Wilkinson, Suter, Guerra, Jungman to fill in the 5th spot and the inevitable injuries and innings limits for young guys. As we can see this year, you're probably going to need contributions from a bunch of those guys. Take Nelson away though and changes things greatly. Basically, you wouldn't want to start a season with our current rotation situation.
  20. He seems to be in love with Perez lately. He hasn't been doing bad but he hasn't been doing anything special either, just his normal self. Not sure why the sudden urgency for him to play every game. Has there been anything about Santana being hurt a bit? I haven't seen anything
  21. It's quite predictable that the Cardinals will sweep us the last 3 games to cost us the playoffs.
  22. Yea we can complain about not getting a SP like some do here. As just said they flipped from rebuild to contender and did fill holes without giving much up. Bandy was sucking, snagged Vogt for nothing who's done well overall. Swarzak for a guy they were likely going to lose in the offseason anyway, filled a huge hole. Walker for almost nothing to fill in one hole in the offense. We can't say they haven't made positive moves to give this run an extra boost. And they did it without giving anything major up. Generally it has worked too, just the Cubs and Rox haven't been losing. And frankly the only reason we in the race to be begin with was the Cubs playing so poorly in the first half, so it is what it is, it's not like we ever more than a few games over .500.
  23. I think Reilly pretty much nails this topic on the head.
  24. I went to a HS football game with a guy who has had 3 kids play for the Badgers and who has a relative who works very closely with Alvarez. We talked the entire game about the program and for about a half about Andersen. I was of the impression that Barry was caught off guard when he left but apparently there was a lot of friction between Andersen and the administration and he was real close to being forced to move on. He didn't like the direction the franchise was going, he was recruiting a lot of guys who had literally no chance to get into Wisconsin(got a few examples) and he did not like the way he wanted to come in and change Wisconsin's style of football. I could go into more detail, but it sounds like he was real close to actually being fired and him leaving was a godsend for them as they didn't have to pay him to coach elsewhere. At the time they said it would take 3 years for them to get things "back on track." The guy kept saying, "I'll stop rambling," but it was one of the most interesting conversations I've ever had. Hearing about behind the scenes stuff that was going on then, about the Ron Dayne days and making sure he got to class, to his recruiting pitches to out of state guys. But yeah, moral of the story with Andersen, he was frustrated they weren't letting guys in he thought they should make exceptions for, Alvarez was not happy with the direction he was taking the offense, he wasn't happy with way he recruited certain players and thought the program was heading in the wrong direction. Jives with everything I hear around Madison and people who know people, etc...
  25. Yea that too, I don't know how a teardown year is a great time for fans. It's an unpleasant necessity or necessarily evil. This year was good fun no matter how it ends up, hope it leads into another great year next and division title.
