  1. I agree with OWBC and Oxy, pretty much nail it in their two posts. Aside from maybe the last sentence about continuous trades, if the next guy we sign is good and the team is winning then you try to win.
  2. Kevin Mench! Well played sir. I'll remember that night forever, I was so mad about that trade. Then the parade and TV cameras on him as he joined the team mid game like he was some star player. I think there was some weird story about how since he changed his shoes he'd hit a few homers, so now he was good. Reminds me too of one that I don't often see brought up as bad trades. Nelson Cruz, we just never gave the guy a shot and he's basically led the league in HRs since we dumped him. But, he did use PEDs so what a POS, so yea I didn't want him, eye roll.
  3. You'd rather play to win right now with this team? I'd rather pile up bodies in the minors and hope to hit on one down the line. Plus, presumably if we picked up a 'bench bat' right now and he went 1/11 to start then we'd all deem the guy to suck and the trade horrible.
  4. Plenty of lottery ticket type guys moved in deals like this have panned out well over the years throughout the league. Of course it's not a high percent, but it does happen and if it did you just took them to the cleaner for the few hundred K the paid Phelps and him looking good for 1 month.
  5. The Indians have options to replace Clevinger. He actually was not pitching amazing this year. Tristan Mckenzie will likely take some starts and could put up very similar numbers It's been like 3 games. He's good and has been for a few years. Sure they have guys to replace, but why 1 when you can have 2. So take the current guys they have like you said, then tack on Bauer, Kluber, Carrasco. Think of all those arms plus Lindor and some hitters. That's a heck of a lot of talent to have not won, that's what I mean by feeling bad a bit.
  6. I know Brewers aren't exactly in go for it mode this season. But he still had 2 years left after this and is cost controlled in arby. Wouldn't have been a bad move to get a guy with this talent at a reasonable cost (if you guys are correct in saying the package is underwhelming). But, I know we still might not have enough in our weak system and that SD likely could've just kept upping until they did get him. Kinda feel for Cleveland fans, the pitching arms and talent they've had come through and now basically just giving up. Too bad they didn't get that WS instead of the Cubs
  7. Right, have to remember this is like the equivalent of stats by late April/early May in a normal season. Just think how much that changes each year. Surprisingly, Eric Thames wasn't Barry Bonds after his first April.
  8. Sure, they could have kept going. But remember...most believed that the Summer would be the time frame when the virus was at it's best and the fall was going to be worse than the initial outbreak. I'm still pretty skeptical that they'll end up playing, even with their reversal(or what appears to be a reversal). Yea I'm skeptical on it too and skeptical on the others too. Just generally didn't see the rush to do it back then, shortened season allowed them to kick the can another month. I'd still guess others get cancelled too, or should be eventually even if they don't actually do it. Take a look at U of Bama right now, this is pretty much what B1G was worried about. But the SEC just wants football so bad. I'd generally take it as the football itself wasn't the big issue. You could test (the new one would be a big help) and massively isolate the team from the rest of campus and make it work. But then they'd be being singled out to allow remote classes when others are in person, or when everyone else eventually gets made fully remote and goes home you'd still be having them on campus. Again singling them out as different. then tack on the liability issues.
  9. What about people traveling into our country? How would we nip them in the bud? Flying into the country, take a test to board the plane. Driving into the country from North or South of the border, take a test before being allowed to cross. Entering the country illegally, no test, just enter the country and infect as many people as you come in contact with I guess... This would be the one that would stop us from nipping anything in the bud. Maybe not the best idiom as you're not going to get it to 0. If you did a mass test of the whole country like that it would gut the numbers huge in under 3 weeks. It's essentially what the NBA bubble did. You'd then be down to a manageable number to start from, like the rest of the civilized world did by actually listening to science. If you're trying to make some blame on this to mexicans, well lets say I think it's misguided.
  10. I just didn't see the rush to cancel two weeks ago. Should've moved back to late Sept (easy to do with the shortened schedules) and then waited to see what happens once schools start. Really a decision wouldn't need to be made until mid Sept then. The new quick test approved was a big help that could help make this happen.
  11. That Arizona story is good stuff, well done science. The $5 at home test that was approved recently should also be huge progress. Of course $5 and not reusable isn't the dream type one I've mentioned here a few times. But it's big progress and one that could make a big help. Sports teams with tons of money this should be a huge help for them to be able to play on. I think they were also used in that Arizona wastewater find. As a society in general though. If our people in charge could actually work together instead of fighting, if you got one of these out to everyone, or maybe two to test back to back days. And everyone did it and then quarantined themselves if posiitve we'd pretty much have this nipped in the bud. If only we had a portion of the government responsible for delivering things to the population's homes, oh wait we do but we're trying to gut it for politics.
  12. I guess I hadn't noticed the Urias 2/20. But eye test he seems to have a good approach and feel like he must've had several in that stretch that were hard hit bad luck, especially opposite field ones. But, I'm certainly not watching as closely as in years past.
  13. Well remember everyone here for the last two years has been clamoring for something to be done at SS. This is what they tried. Grisham/Urias basically even as far as control/youth, upside, etc. one filled a glaring glaring hole(hopefully), the other was an OF where at the time of trade had 3 high priced guys in front of him for at least 1 year, possibly 2. And no DH. Granted with Braun's age/injuries there was going to be plenty of PT, but one clearly fit a more urgent need. Plus, we had no set 3B and still don't, so two needed spots. Davis/Lauer was trading the proven and better pitcher for the younger guy with more years of cheap control. happens all the time. Generally speaking I liked Lauer as having a legit shot in the bigs even before we got him. Be careful not to rush to judgment based on 3 games in a funky year. Think how many 3-5 game stretches Davies had over the years where he looked like he was throwing BP. But man what a disappoint first couple appearances. Long story short, I totally got the trade. I probably would've been fine holding off too, but I got the logic. Try to remember the conditions at the time had no DH and no Cain sitting out, as well as not rushing to judge on small samples. Still, of course 25 games in we look like the loser, but this was a trade for 5 years not one weird short season, we'll see how it goes.
  14. Generally agree with where you're going and talking about. But it's not so much post ups we should be begging for. Though I grant it is a wrinkle to use as Brook is so good at it in certain matchups, like says against MIA if they're guarding him with Bam. But just overall ball movement, passing, and ball screens. Giannis as the dive man off a ball screen should be a mass staple. This stuff fits the modern game better and accomplishes what you want, Giannis feasting in the lane and less standing and watching from everyone else. While also being more efficient than posts, and less standing by everyone else than a post. Also it's Giannis getting a crease/opening to the lane instead of staring at 3 defenders and trying to barrel through.
  15. I'd say it's more the pro Trump crowd that thinks it's all BS that I'd be concerned about. They don't think this is real, so why would they get a vaccine. And the anti vacc crown is a strong overlap with the Trumpers already. If there is nobody in the medical side of it saying they're being pressured (like what just happened on that treatment this week) the people who have been saying the whole time they believe in science should have no reason not to trust science. Like I said, that's why he has to stay out of it and not muddy it up with politics, let them do it the way they're supposed to. But of course, if he doesn't stick his nose in then he can't try to take credit combined with painting someone else as at fault
  16. I've had it most years of my adult life as my company brings someone in to give it for free. Never have any side affects and never get the flu. Granted, I'm a fairly "never get sick" type person to begin with though. Well the side effects, longer term ones and such is a legit worry. But that's also why you have to let the experts work the process correctly to do the best they can. Not forcing them to rush and approve stuff early for political reasons. I think I've also read the guess right now is that due to such concerns they'll probably be cautious on the first one approved, which might lead to effectiveness being only in the 50% ballpark. But, it's something you can get out there to curb the exponential growth issue while they continue to work on better ones and can test more long term. It's been at least several weeks since I read on it though so take a bit with a grain of salt of memory. But an issue will be that if it's only ballpark 50% effective. You also will have 25% of the population that won't take it because it's part of a conspiracy, in their minds. Then you'll have a totally legit group like we're discussing here concerned on kind of being the first ones up, who won't take it right away. Either way, it should put a dent in it and reduce the exponential growth problem.
  17. Their current TV deal was also signed like 8-10 years ago. This current good run along with sustained general goodness from 08 til now (as opposed to garbage from 92-08) should lead to an increase on the next one. But as others said just the pure numbers and logistics of the situation are a hindrance and nothing can be done.
  18. Yea it's context. N bomb singing along to rap song, that's one thing. Making the leap to bigot from that is tough. Saying it to describe why you hate the inner city of wherever city because of the Ns. That's way way way different. And that's how and the tone he was using it here.
  19. Exactly. We have 2 good shooters in Khris and Hill. Korver who can't play cuz he's bad at everything else. Then a bunch of blah/mediocre guys. Again, this is not good compared to the rest of the league. Then, and this is where watching the other games matter that you just shunned, the other teams guys are drilling off the dribble with hands in their faces, and quick releases. our guys are all catch/shoot when wide open and they're still this mediocre. They can't generate anything for themselves. You can be mad that I said it all you want, but seriously I have no idea if you watch these other teams you think we're the same. Can we still win since we have Giannis, yes we can. But we have very little margin for error with only really 2 legit good shooters playing (or that should be playing vs good teams). If you have 4-5 good, plus the mediocre guys like we have then you have enough guys that a few of them are gonna be hot to make up for when the others aren't. In a way, that we're forcing Korver out there when he is atrocious at everything else shows you how desperate they are for shooting.
  20. Well written and all. But cmon, he didn't know that was a bad word? If a clip of him saying this in say 1997 came out I'd be ok with that type of reasoning and probably overall with him taking it on the chin for a few days and moving on, assuming he really isn't a bigot. But it's 2020, everyone knows this now. And for a guy in his spot, with the diversity he's around on a daily basis he definitely knows all this. He just got caught.
  21. Two good shooters doesn't add up vs the rest of the league. Korver is a 3rd but he's basically unplayable because of everything. Mathews is good enough/fine. That is not that good enough when comparing to the rest of the league. Lopez is good 'for a big guy' but he's still not a good shooter. Aaand, don't forget Giannis is generating a crazy amount of open shots that other teams aren't, and these other guys are still just mediocre. If you disagree I'd urge to watch the other games more closely.
  22. Yea I'd agree with that on some low level guy, but the producer is right there in the booth with him (well before this year). The other announcer, and then people above them. Obviously we're taking a lot from one sound clip, but it sure seemed that's just the way he is. Of course there also might be some level of due to his dad there's nothing anyone can do about it even if they didn't like this aspect of him. Buuuut, that's kinda the whole point of these types of movements in society.
  23. Someone has also been sitting around letting this go on off camera for a while. Either joining (he was talking to someone there) in or at least letting it go on
  24. I think it's feasible a lot could be better by the new year or early spring. Generally speaking I agree the area we've been hovering for a couple months now seems like it's gonna be that way for a while. But I do think the 3-4 hotspot states have had some declines (shocker, closing everything and wearing masks helped) the last few weeks, so there is hope there too. But yea in general a testing breakthrough has to happen so people can quickly and easily get tested almost daily for like a month to just flush it out. Or of course some kind of vaccine. Guess that was a long way to say, I do think they should contingency plan for something, if it falls through so be it. 8 weeks with first game start of Feb with 1 bye and a conf title game gets done by early/mid April. Try to backload home games for the coldest states to the end, idk. I think someone mentioned in the recent tweets the JAn plan somehow involved playing indoors? Like maybe share all games between MN, Det, Indy somehow?
  25. Yea I didn't mean it like that as if he shouldn't want to dominate and be the man or that he shouldn't have tons of usage. More out of how they're trying to do it with just dribbling by himself at the top and going crashing in while everyone else stands. Granted some of this scheme/coaching too to not have more motion involved. There just has to be more passing and motion and then he can go nuts when he sees an easier crease than he has now. This was the same vs Tor too. Even just last game the few times he was the screener/roller they got good results and a couple easy finishes for him, that has to come in more. But like you just said, they don't have that PG to shoot off that like a Beal could. Since they don't I'd just do it alot with Khris at this point, if they give him the midrange open shot cuz they sag on Giannis, shoot it. And yea I don't think he'd have any problem co-existing with a 2nd star. Heck Mid this year was a top 12-18 player and they played together just fine. Who knows if Khris can maintain that level for years but he was this year. But overall I agree the better fit for that 2nd star would be the modern PGs we're seeing all over the playoffs now rather than someone like Khris. It's why I had a hard-on for Lillard for years hoping he'd demand his way out of Por to come here. But yea if we could add that guy (beal would be close enough) while also keeping Khris that's probably our best case scenario.
