  1. I don't think Wisconsin gets in with a win, they need the blowout. If Wisconsin blows out Ohio State I would expect Ohio State to drop from the Top 4 and be behind Wisconsin, even if by one spot. This is exactly what happened in 2017 with Ohio State/Wisconsin. They aren't totally comparable situations, but I don't think the CFP can ignore a blowout win. Unless they admit Ohio State had nothing to play for and were in regardless...thus inferring they weren't trying hard. I doubt they do that, I just don't think they can logically place OSU over Wisconsin at that point. I think Wisconsin would get rewarded for blowing out Ohio State.
  2. With the recent non tenders I believe so. But that is just that many more players needing to be replaced. Might be even lower with Davies gone too. Kinda messy when your payroll only accounts for half a roster. Regardless spending a quarter of our payroll on one dude is slim to none. You can't ignore arbitration costs though. There are a few pricey guys in the next few years and then it really balloons in 2022...that could be one heck of an arbitration class when Cain/Yelich are still on the payroll. I would go sign Thames and another affordable 3B to round out the offense (or whatever cheaper 1B you prefer). Then I would go sign Ryu plus another of the nice starters on the market (or Lyles if we cheap). Seems way better than dumping $35mil for Rendon to grow old in Milwaukee.
  3. What are we at? Near $80mil? So that leaves like $15mil...generously speaking. Braun only frees up like $15mil in the future and that would all be eaten up by arby raises etc. I am sure.
  4. Yeah, I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear the Brewers side of this. I'm positive they have a good reason to value the comp pick the way they do. Probably the fact Narvaez will provide more value than the average a player around that pick gives in their career. I mean what does one realistically get at that slot? I would probably be thrilled if we drafted a future Narvaez there. You could have that now instead of waiting 5+ years to get it. You get less control, but it is much more a certainty. How valuable is that player getting drafted taking into consideration you have to wait so long to maaaybe get some return? It probably isn't hard to find a better value on paper trading the pick versus using it yourself.
  5. We definitely need to nab Smith now, I don't know what we win for worst defense in history...but we are well on our way.
  6. Nah, patience is overrated! We are in the age of crazy over-the-top hot takes! This is fun. It's so cool cheering for a team that makes intelligent decisions and doesn't freak out and make reactionary moves. You don't know that! It's possible Stearns was reading Brewerfan last night and thought "Whoa, I better do something". Hence, trade today. That would only be true if he handed out a few $100mil contracts.
  7. I think the delay was Stearns waiting for Haudricourt to tweet something like the above and then promptly provide yet another reason for us to ridicule our "well-connected Brewers expert" beat writer... Have people not realized Haudricourt is just a terrible "insider" and pretty clueless on most things? He is too far up the Brewer's rear to be useful in giving relevant information. I would rather read Bob Nightengale info on the Brewers.
  8. MLB teams just simply don't tend to value no defense offensive bats that much these days. It is lower than I thought, but not shocking. They almost get valued like they aren't a full starter most of the time. These types of players can be a great value for teams that can afford to or lessen that defensive deficiency. Much like the Brewers hiding Hiura's atrocious defense with Arcia last year (as much as they could). It is a good trade for the Brewers as he fits perfectly into their plans with Pina. Good duo.
  9. It isn't meaningless, it the only sample size, and all I said was I was disappointed it wasn't more promising. PH/Sub numbers can be fluky year to year, but unfortunately to this point Narvaez has only show to be poor at it. It's a good thing he's likely to be the primary catcher then. He is likely to split a good chunk of time and will likely see plenty of PH opportunities being the "best" hitter when on the bench. It would be nice if he can produce in that type of capacity too.
  10. It isn't meaningless, it the only sample size, and all I said was I was disappointed it wasn't more promising. PH/Sub numbers can be fluky year to year, but unfortunately to this point Narvaez has only show to be poor at it. Regarding Seager there is way to much love for a grandpa aged 3B who had one good month all of last year.
  11. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong numbers but baseball reference says he was 8-26 as a pinch hitter last year: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=narvaom01&year=2019&t=b Sure, if you are a fan of average. I care more about OPS.
  12. Zack Greinke might have picked Milwaukee over a large market if we offered the same deal. Will never know that, but that is about the only elite guy I can imagine.
  13. This could be somewhat relevant. Ryu is also a lefty, who in my opinion, is another very realistic target the Brewers might get. Regardless I would think the Brewers would have him catch lefty starters for the reason you listed. Helps his defense...or hides it.
  14. Somewhat being glossed over another position filled without really spending a dime. SS and C are both filled. Both positions some thought we may spend cash on. The question will live on, when are we going to spend money and on what? Another Thing: I was hoping to see him with some nice PH/Sub numbers for the bench...nope, absolutely hideous numbers. In his entire career zero of his homers are off the bench and he only has two doubles in 63 PA.
  15. Yes, but you can compare catchers and see Narvaez gives up exponentially more than other catchers. Part of a catchers job is pitch framing and stopping wild pitches to help out his pitcher. Narvaez is a real big negative on the pitching side when he takes the field. I don't think it is some coincidence. Narvaez is definitely poor at blocking pitches...how poor, we will find out. He has been in the league 4 years, every year he has that same problem. Two different teams and many different pitchers.
  16. Of course, but the Brewers pitchers aren't very good at it and Grandal still managed to be league average. Who isn't really known to gun runners out.
  17. Wouldn't wild pitches be more on the pitcher than the catcher, though? Seattle's pitching in 2019 was a mix of veteran underperformance and inconsistent youngsters. When you are over two times worse than other catchers, no...that shows the inability to block pitches and help your pitchers out. He was two from being league leader when the leader had over 100 innings more behead the dish. Lucroy was the only one worse if you average it per inning. That's simply too many to not be reflective of his own poor blocking skills.
  18. Why? Because he is right? If it isn't about money no one is going out of their way to pick Milwaukee except very rare exceptions.
  19. Few things: His caught stealing % is very bad. On the bright side teams don't steal that much anymore even on bad catchers. His passed balls allowed was horrible in 2018 (12), but much improved in more innings this year (3). That is either good or Yasmani Grandal levels. Where his defense jumps out is wild pitches he gave up (54 last year in 815 innings). That is REALLY bad. Grandal allowed 30 last year in almost 1,100 innings. So expect some terrible blocking skills. Of course there is his pitch framing ability which would add to his poor defense. Don't be fooled, nothing about this guys defense sounds remotely close to decent.
  20. Moustakas got to him? I’m not following. He posted an OPS of .860 and .829 in the months after they traded for Moustakas. You know, back when Moustakas actually was taking time away from Shaw at 3B. Shaw then struggled in 2019 when Moustakas was taking zero time away from him at 3B. Now he eventually did, but that was after Shaw was already a disaster and derailed his season. The stats don’t back up that claim and there was no reason in 2018 or 2019 for Shaw to be bothered by Moustakas.
  21. If we get a pitcher I want Ryu. If he bombs he is only around 3 years (likely)...no one in this class has anywhere near his upside in our price range. He is a great risk for us in my opinion.
  22. Why not? The park is arguably due for a mid-life upgrade... Fake turf is an upgrade? They just overhauled the food areas, a new scoreboard is on the docket, and new seats are in the near future.
