  1. When you think about why people are going to these services (to save money) carrying a live TV subscription and Netflix just seems way less attractive. I don't know that Netflix is really worth the $15 price tag they have made themselves. I guess I am shocked Netflix didn't and hasn't jumped in on the live TV thing. Netflix Originals was forward thinking, but I don't think it is going to lead to long term success and growth. Forward thinking would have been to be a live TV subscription on top of their already superior movie/original content. They could have been the WalMart of the segment in my opinion.
  2. Yah, sorry, but no team signs players with no intention to keep them the entire contract and plan to dump them halfway through. Simply does not happen when contracts are fully guaranteed and players are 30+. Now they may sign them fully knowing some back end years will be a total albatross, but they surely aren’t planning that they can get out of some year/loads of money halfway through. Teams pretty much have to write that player into the payroll for whatever the contract says. They aren’t going to assume/predict they can be dumped to some other team in 2 years. Simply too many factors that make that such an unlikely scenario. Simply put they have to extend an offer fully assuming he will be here for the entire length.
  3. I wonder how Netflix has done since all these TV options have popped up. I knew many people had Netflix to have something to watch instead of paying cable. Just for times when you were bored and desperate to watch something. Wonder if many of those people have shifted to a different platform and left Netflix.
  4. The D Backs coach got two votes, both from the AZ chapter. That’s all you need to know about this voting process folks.
  5. Yikes. A kid getting hurt sliding in a baseball game happens all the time. Generally it is because the kid slides too late and jams up an ankle. It is a huge leap of logic to put financial responsibility for this on a coach, though. Even if you can prove that he gave the slide sign late, it's just not something that seems reckless nor negligent. This isn't a chess match with time to think through moves. I know...just saying you could make enough of something to get a hearing out of it. Chances to win are essentially zero, but the court system is intended to give you your voice in court as long as it is at least somewhat relevant.
  6. I am guessing it is directly tied to the fact he was under the age of 18 when it happened and to be fair the coach did tell him to slide...and also seems like it was a dangerous situation to slide in (sliding late at full speed is what it sounded like). I see how it has enough to get into court. This is the US and people sue cause they spilled hot coffee on themselves. That is only the tip of the iceberg of ridiculous things to get to court and win.
  7. You are inferring incredible changes in success when there are RISP. If this was true then the home/road splits for such a stat would also be off the charts. Is that actually the case? I don't have the stats, but I really doubt that. If you believe they were cheating daily at home there should be big big differences that make them better at home offensively across the board. I doubt they just do it with RISP. If I am not mistaken in the example video no one is even on 2nd or 3rd (I know not 2nd, but can't recall 3rd). While I think it could have a way more direct effect on results this is similar to PEDs. They aren't going to suddenly make you a god at the plate. I think it can make a difference, but not enough to think they are doing it every AB and/or to make them go from #20 in baseball to #1 with RISP.
  8. Can you imagine accidentally ruining someone’s life in a non reckless way and then that person coming and internationally ruining yours? Sad sad world we live in.
  9. That restaurant really should have been stuck in the club level OF or something...much like the Northwestern Mutual Club or whatever it is. They could have really piled in a bunch of seating that could actually see the field and feel like they are apart of the game. Instead there are like 10 tables squished together awkwardly. I get it, makes more sense the rest of the year, but seems like such a dumb spot on game days.
  10. I could be wrong, but I don't think "push trade schools" means directing individual students to something that they don't want to do. It's about, as you said, making sure students are aware that there are valuable and even lucrative options out there besides the 4-year degree. I see kids pass through every year who would be happy as welders/plumbers/electricians/carpenters/etc...but feel they are more of a "college type" person. That's fine, too, as long as they are aware of the options and costs of each. Regarding living at home for a few years after college...Do you think there should be some shame in that? If you word it as push kids towards trade school...yes, I think that means directing them to do it. Many people think college is dumb and not worth it (statistically wrong) and kids should go to trade school. Typically these people are in trades so they have bias, but when it is mentioned usually one is referring that kids should flat out go into a trade and not university...if you do you are dumb and wasting money. As far as living at home, no, I don't think there should be shame in that. Most people I know who are or have done it usually pay zero bills on top of it though. Their parents are still paying for their car, the car insurance, the phone, and the food. Now should there be shame in that? Well, seems like eventually you need to put on the big boy/girl pants and face reality. For the time I did it I gave money for food, had my own car at that point, and paid for my phone (I did stay on their plan to save money though). Basically I just lived rent free...I paid for my other necessities. It is a newer trend, but people have been doing the same before getting married to save money on the expense for quite a long time, so not much different. That being said I did not do it to pay off the loans faster. I was actually just compiling money for stuff when I moved out and to get a huge head start saving the 20%+ for the down payment on a house. The loan doesn't really bother me (about $255 a month). I valued avoiding mortgage insurance and the insane costs of not putting a lot down on a house (tens of thousands, much more than the few thousand the student loan costs). Plus it allows me to buy a house years before I would have otherwise.
  11. Students should not be directed to trade schools, I am so sick of hearing that. Students should be directed to all their options and do what they want. They should be educated on the financial side of things and their outlook post graduation in whatever interests them. The country may be in dire need of plumbers etc., but students shouldn't be pushed to do something. Students shouldn't be directed to go to a trade school because there is crippling debt via university...that's really just trying to ignore the problem. Now should students be educated on trade schools and how that job market is great with decent pay? Sure! But the whole push of older generations telling kids to go be plumbers etc. is just wrong. I see it on Facebook every single time student debt or college costs comes up. Someone should be able to go be a social worker, teacher, or one of many other essential job in society without carrying around a bunch of debt. I always see people touting how they are so smart because they went to trade school and make good money blah blah blah. If you are a fan of a trade school related job and can do it all the more power. Like I said before I think post bachelor education is the problem. That is where many find unavoidable crippling debt...especially if they got debt via their bachelor's degree to. If you have crippling debt from undergrad ($50k+ in my opinion is getting troublesome) then I think you probably made a poor financial decision. But that is the problem, the first four years already put you with a huge chunk of debt early in life. It quickly gets hard for people to add anymore debt, whether that be more schooling, car, house, etc. As far as your numbers Keith $55k is pretty close to the low end of the monthly range you gave. If you have the average student debt amount that has to pushing $350 a month. Assuming basic expenses (including a reasonable car loan) I would venture to guess your surplus money every month would be less than $750...largely hinging on if a student needs their own health/dental insurance. Depending on where you live maybe closer to $500 or maybe $1,000. When you consider most college students graduate broke I don't think they can really afford to double their payment and pay it off in 5 years vs. 10 years. They need to build up a pile of cash for emergencies and what not...not live pay check to pay check to pay off the loans faster. That being said many college grads have zero shame in living at home for quite a few years post graduation to either save money or pay down the loans really fast. Not everyone may have that opportunity, but many are doing exactly that.
  12. I’m sorry, but there is 100% now way anything in stats is reflecting them stealing signs. If they went from bottom of the barrel to the best in a matter of one year you should be able to watch 162 games of bat clanking change up mashing hitting. One video shows what looks to be sign stealing...one game. I am sure it is nowhere near the only one, but I doubt they did it to some degree they were suddenly amazing with RISP...you still gotta but it good. That’s just too big of a change to be because of sign stealing.
  13. Really sad the Spongebob meme has been replaced as the #1 meme. I think those are great haha. The cat one doesn’t really seem funny to me.
  14. That’s truly shocking, I would have suspected they would embrace this in excitement.
  15. Wonder what they will get for this, I mean at face value this is....really bad. Using a camera to steal signs, relaying by radio to the dugout, and then smacking a trash can with a bat so loud the hitter can hear it. Having a base runner stealing signs is one thing. To me that is apart of the shady side of baseball you need to plan for as a team. However using a camera? That’s an impressive level of pathetic.

  17. Sweet!! A new punching bag for when the offense sucks!
  18. They are literally subtracting bleacher seats because they don't make financial sense...pretty confident they don't need to add them above the bullpen...where they technically have a seating area in the Check Deck anyway.
  19. Seahawks or 49ers. Basically do you want our defense to get slaughtered or do you want the offense to get slaughtered. I guess I look at the 49ers and see they were pretty uninspiring against both the Redskins and Cardinals. I think I will take the 49ers and hope our offense can do enough...but man the 49ers D would tear our line up. On the flip side maybe you hope for a bad game from the Seahawks offense. Obviously the 49ers game will make this questions a bit more clear.
  20. There is no expense that justifies the charge. I think students usually have to do some basic reporting on what they are doing or what they did. Probably some type of reflection paper, but I am not entirely sure as I didn't personally do it. Isn't very shocking though. Online classes also have a premium price to take. I think the few times I did it there was a $250 or so charge for a three credit class. There ends up being little to no difference between the online class and the in class one. If there is a special online program you have to use through the book company you are the one that pays to get it, not the school...and many classes just go through the schools online portal that the in class people use to take assignments etc. I would say most students end up never talking to the teacher, teach themselves, and look at the same slides that are cycled through in the in class sessions. In reality it actually saves the school money as no one is in the classroom to waste heat/electricity/paper handouts etc. As far as the income inequality someone hit on, yes, well off kids with huge support from their parents always tend to have a huge upper hand. However, the lowest on the totem pole kids are not the ones that struggle most with the finance side of things. Those kids get a pile of grants and if they were successful in high school are automatically to the front of the line when it comes to scholarships. To be exact if these low income kids are commuting they usually end up getting thousands of dollars in surplus grant money straight to their bank account. Which no, is not typically used for legitimate needs. Usually they buy stuff unrelated to school or if it is for school it is usually blown on an Apple computer...which is actually a horrendous laptop for college as most universities go through Windows/Microsoft. Like I have said before the kids in the middle income brackets (specifically upper-middle) are the ones drawing the short end of the stick. No grants, unsubsidized federal loans, offered the minimum amount for federal loans, parents likely don't have the savings for college, and don't have an advantage when it comes to scholarships. If the parents don't provide major help these are the students piling up debt quickly. They are in this awkward position where their families don't have tons of extra cash laying around, but are well off enough that additional assistance is not provided.
  21. I thought the same to be honest. That being said the only way for the Seahawks to really get the ball back with one was for a three and out...pick up a single first down and the Seahawks likely don’t get a chance even if you can’t get to field goal range. You got an 8-0 team with a good QB. I don’t see how you just accept a tie and not go for the win when, again, a first down makes it where you will score or no one will. Only needing a FG probably factored in. It is fair the wonder though, go for a win and risk losing or take the tie and basically make the game a wash. If they were on the road against the Seahawks maybe that changes as in the back of your mind you would know the decisive game would be at home instead of the road later on.
  22. I’d venture to say the expectations for college are a lot different too. I’d guess back when less went to college the degree alone was probably enough to land a job easily. Now the expectation is for everyone to go to college which then means a lot of supply compared to the demand. Now grades can be important or even essential and internships are quickly becoming a need. Those two things don’t leave a lot of free time to have a job while in school. I knew many people that went into Sport Management which continues to be a pathetically outdated industry that insists on free labor via interns (usually a comical stipend is offered). Internships are often required to graduate in that major. So you are essentially paying to work.
  23. This thread was about to be WOAH SOLVVD if you guys knew each other.
  24. Said on the radio today that a press event to unveil the new logo/uniforms is being held next week. They didn’t say exactly when. Thanks, that pretty much confirms a Monday presser.
  25. UW-Madison isn’t even expensive, it is dirt cheap for that kind of education. I think the average cost for a public university in Illinois is pushing $15k or so (minimum $13k). Madison is in the 11k range and the UW system is as low as $8k. Obviously there are other assorted costs, but the Wisconsin system is cheap. I don’t think it is Top 10...but fairly close.
