  1. Well before the last week I’d say he was probably not as great as they look now. Still really good. A lot of people were hoping he would have a nice breakout moving to Miller Park instead of Marlins Park...then at his age a lot of people are hoping for a nice breakout that way. Now I think he has turned his stats into the best of his career...though not as much as one would have hoped with the parks he plays at now. I guess I don't understand that last part. I expected maybe a few HR bump but certainly not a 30 HR type of guy that will win MVP awards. His numbers were not as great a week ago but still above career norms. I think expectations were too high, he was still selected as an All-Star and rightfully so. There were high expectations. Some thinking he might alter his swing to get more loft. He really hasn’t so the power number didn’t really get aided by Miller Park. Not necessarily my expectations, but a lot of people were calling for 25+ HR.
  2. Ah yes, the ol' "move your gold glove outfielder to 1st base to make room for questionable minor league talent" play. Love that one! Christian Yelich is not a gold glove OFer. His arm is a liability and while he can get to some balls he doesn’t have blazing quick speed to get to a lot of balls others can’t. That being said he is a solid defender with a great bat. I doubt we ever have a situation where it’s a good idea to put him at 1B.

  4. Total no brainer in my mind. Shaw (a lefty)...then whatever trash we opt to hit after him.
  5. Pitchers get away with it all day long. When you throw 98+ you can really get away with it.
  6. If Counsell was going by the book Knebel wouldn’t have been in until a lead....but carry on.
  7. Y’all had me thinking gameday was three years behind and Adams hit a homer or something....
  8. Broxton would immediately step in as a starter for Baltimore, his numbers are better than Brinson's in Miami, he'd likely start in San Diego, Kansas City, Texas, Chicago A.L., Detroit and possibly in MN given Buxton's problems and in Cincy if not a division rival. You're correct, he's likely never going to be a star player, but its not as though the Brewers are going to release him as worthless either. He's a cost-controlled plus defender with speed and power and has already proven he can play in the majors, he wouldn't be just throw in garbage. He is throw-in garbage. If he wasn’t we would have traded him before the season to get something for him. He has zero options remaining after this year and you can bet he isn’t making our MLB roster and teams won’t knock down the door to get him. Those are all rebuilding teams that are terrible. He would be an improvement there because those teams don’t care that they are throwing trash out there. If it costs nothing, great! They aren’t going to trade assets for Broxton to come strikeout 3 times a night during their rebuild.
  9. I think Counsell is pretty safe because the players seem to like him. Stearns is also pretty safe for the next few years at minimum. That being said if you assume we have another flop after last year and next year is some kind of disaster what does it take for a manager to get fired. That would be some form of a disaster 3 years in a row.
  10. Did Santana retire? It seems ridiculously early to call that some kind of mistake. Like....waaaay too early.
  11. Things that are kind of a given: Trading a pitcher and trading Brett Phillips. All of these pitchers and Brett Phillips will not be here opening day in 2019.
  12. They never gave a good reply, but looked like a pathetic effort.
  13. Man you can’t find yourself in a full count with the bases loaded as a pitcher.
  14. What idiot put Keon Broxton at lead-off so he was hitting there and just wasted an out bunting?
  15. These moves go in a different category than "garage sale finds", you have to compare them against other FA signings, not other garage sale finds. These are big FA signings shopping from the list of the 30-40 top free agents. There are a lot of FAs to choose from. There were other comparable options and we did better for the price than anyone else. We could have paid for a relief pitcher. Or we could have done nothing (especially in outfield). Look I’m not going to argue about it. They are nice moves, but these aren’t career defining transactions for Stearns. What is going to “make or break us” are the Machado, Gennett, avoiding FA pitchers last winter, Aguilar, etc. type moves. What Stearns has done is inherited a lot of good things and made some major moves that he could do because of prospect capital and payroll room. He has done a phenomenal job getting us back to average-above average....but in my opinion that can be very easy. The true test is getting us to the next level and he has created a great foundation with many great prospects throughout the system. I’m not criticizing him, but I’m also not putting him on a pedestal. For the record I think he will go down as the best GM in Brewers history someday and gets us back to the World Series...so don’t claim I have something against Stearns. He just hasn’t passed the true test yet...and that’s okay because it is still early on.
  16. So no free agent acquisition is impressive? If you get one cheap he fell into your lap? If you pay for one that doesnt count either? The fact of the matter is Stearns went out an got 3 guys who are easily outperforming their contracts in Cain, Jeffress and Chacin. Add on top of that getting Yelich without selling a huge chunk of the farm. He didnt without giving up any of our top pitching and without giving up Huira. That is impressive. And he got one of the top NL Ofers who is controlled for a while. I am not sure what a GM can get credit for in your mind This. Stearns isn't perfect by any means but criticizing him for those offseason moves seems to me to be complaining just to complain because the team is scuffling right now. I complained? No I didn’t. I just said paying sticker price for something isn’t impressive. None of these guys were particularly garage sale finds. Jeremy Jeffress was a great get, but he wanted to be here and it was basically a no brainer. Lorenzo Cain will be a great get if he produces his entire contract...no one was worried about his production in year one. I actually complimented Stearns and you will find I have not complained during this entire nightmare of a skid. So not sure that makes sense. I’m not saying they were bad moves...just not something hang a feather on your cap for.
  17. Stearns deserves a pat on the back because he got 3 AS players in the offseason? One fell into our lap (Jeffress), he paid to get one (Cain), and sold a huge chunk of farm to get another (Yelich). That deserves almost no credit. I can make those kind of moves on a video game. Sorry those aren’t impressive moves. Overall I will give him this year and last as free passes. One year we surprised and this year was his first go at really controlling a winner. If the team fails again next year? Well, then I am going to start questioning. We have many great players on this team and have huge prospect capital near MLB ready. They either need to perform or get traded to get help. Don’t get me wrong I love a lot of Stearns moves, but eventually you gotta be able to get the team into the postseason and win those games. So far we are floundering two years in a row. You have to get end of the year team results...not a bunch of individual nice moves. Generally speaking Stearns has got through 2020 to prove himself and Counsell has got through next year before I really wondering about him...especially if it is another hot start only to poop the bed. Obviously a lot can change that between now and then.
  18. if I recall correctly once you hit an inning mark going less in the future is meaningless. Though you probably wish he could pitch up close to 180 this year so he could really be prepared next year for a full load. Also entertainment value? What is entertaining is winning. Chase Anderson has been good after early season struggles and Miley has been pretty good in his few starts. No where to really put him at this moment in time.
  19. If we trade Domingo Santana for rentals...no just no. We can not possibly just give up on Santana like that. Both would help a lot so a deal around Ortiz and some lesser pieces is fine. I doubt they want our trash (Saladino and Miller). If they want Miller have at it, but they already had the chance.
  20. I don’t view it that way. I view as they are being pulled either because they aren’t pitching well enough to stay in or they can’t be trusted to keep pitching well enough to stay in. If they are pitching well I doubt Counsell is going to pull them just because the bullpen is good. The best way to keep the bullpen pitching well is to keep them fresh. Neither of those things have been issues many times. Counsell just got a little too into his bullpen when it was doing so well. He was pulling the pitcher for a PH after 5 innings just because he could go to the bullpen. The bullpen was so good if the starter could go 5 innings and we had the right guys available a win was pretty much in the books. Counsell loves to go all in when we lead in the second half of the game and hates to risk wasting bullpen guys late if we are losing. Not sure that is really the right way to manage the pitching staff, but that is how he does it. Of course I’m the long run such a lack of QO starts (by choice) is sure to catch up to us.
