  1. IIRC Cookie Carrasco was turned around in 2013 due to the efforts of Tribe pitching coach Mickey Calloway & then bullpen coach Kevin Cash.
  2. I don’t know this to be a certain fact, but I believe the Indians were one of the first teams to incorporate weighted ball throwing programs as part of their organizational pitcher development practices. I believe that (the weighted balls & associated drills with them) was something pushed for by Trevor Bauer after he arrived in Cleveland and started talking about the things he had learned/ help to develop with other 3rd party camps/ groups.....
  3. The Indians need to cut payroll. it will be interesting to see what they will do. I don't believe "cut payroll" is the right phrase. Redistribute their payroll commitments is a better phrase for what is needed. They can afford $55M across 6 players. Having those 6 players be 3 SP, 2 middle INF & a RP (Kluber, Carrasco, Bauer, Lindor, JRam, & B. Hand) is difficult when another $44+M is tied up in 3 others (Edwin E, Kipnis, & Yonder Alonso) for 2019.. Those last 3 have team options for 2020. I'm guessing 3 will not have their options picked up if still in Cleveland at the end of next season.
  4. If the Brewers land Ruben Niebla, they might as well deal for Danny Salazar. Ruben seems to be the only person that can "fix/ correct" Danny when he gets out of sync..
  5. Your raising an interesting target for a trade. I am not saying the Indians would or would not make a deal involving Kluber but if they did it would not be a cheap acquisition in terms of assets (being sent to Cleveland) or salary being absorbed by the acquiring club... When someone else raised the possibility of Carlos Carrasco a month ago I tried to point out that while Carlos has 1 less year of team control he is at a cheaper cost than Kluber and is also at a cheaper cost than Trevor Bauer (with the same length of control). IMHO it would cost more for a team to acquire Carlos than either Kluber or Bauer & none of them would be cheap...
  6. Actually, due to his finishes in the AL Cy Young vote over the past few years, Kluber's salary is higher then stated above. 2019 = $17M 2020 = $17.5M (club option year or buyout of $1M) 2012 = $18M (club option year, no buyout charge that I could find) It's less than what he would get on the open market but not as cheap as the original contract amounts before the various award escalators kicked in ($13.2M, $13.5M and $14M).
  7. Well the cost to acquire Brantley dropped a little bit. It appears the Indians are NOT placing a QO on Brantley.. smh
  8. I would be stunned if the Indians did not attach a Qualifying Offer to Brantley (otherwise they get zero compensation for Dr. Smooth signing elsewhere). As an organization the Indians cannot lose all of Brantley, Andrew Miller & Cody Allen for zilch. Of those 3, Brantley is the 1 guy that might decline the QO (the other two would take it for a massive pay increase while trying to rebuild their value). So beyond his slipping defensively and getting paid a chunk of money to sign in MKE, there will be some sort of loss in draft pick/ signing pool money. Ultimately its the choice of DS to pursue & offer, but I think he would pass.
  9. Buster Olney was reporting on the BBTN podcast over the past week plus that officials in Houston view Gonzalez as their best 2B. Considering Altuve just had knee surgery after the season ended, I could see the Astros offering/paying Marwin a large amount of money to make it harder for him to go & tougher for a smaller market team to match/ surpass.
  10. The Orioles are a team that has done that before & considering their need for pitching overall I would not be surprised if they did it again. Anthony Santander (OF) had shoulder surgery leading up to the R5 in 2016. Got taken in Dec 2016 by Baltimore, spent most of 2017 on the DL, got some time late in the 2017 season, spent the next off season on the 40 man and then finished out the obligation in the 2018 season before heading back to the minors.
  11. I'm confused by this post... Broxton is an outfielder, Henry is a catcher. Just my 2 cents but I believe he was referencing Troy Stokes with that comment.
  12. Considering his performance in Cleveland during 2018, I think Free Agent Oliver Perez would make a good, cost effective target for a MLB deal (1 yr plus option). Yes, he is older and his effectiveness has varied throughout the career but he is at worst a LOOGY at this point. I believe Cleveland would like to retain him but with other needs & limited budget availability, they might look internal to fill out the left side of the bullpen beyond Brad Hand (Tyler Olson, possibly Rob Kaminsky & others from the minors). Cleveland's loss in this case could be Milwaukee's gain. OPerez could be a quick addition to the bullpen so Stearns can focus on other needs over the off-season..
  13. I don't see the Marlins accepting that deal for Realmuto. They were demanding one of Robles or Soto in a possible deal with Washington & the Nationals passed. Unless Hiura is in the package, I doubt the Marlins entertain any offer from the Brewers.
  14. I doubt the Crew can get Goldy (a worthy target) without trading away Hiura. There isn't enough other top talent on the farm to make that deal.
  15. I believe there is a designation in the rules that a pitcher must replace a pitcher and a position player must replace a position player (although there is no further rule like catcher for catcher).
  16. You nailed it. The Indians horrible outfield is what held them back this year, but instead of addressing it, they dealt their best trade chip for a set-up man. Not only is McKenzie knocking at the door, Salazar should be back. They have a abundance of ML-caliber starting pitching. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see them trade some of that depth to firm up their outfield. I believe I wasn't clear earlier. I wasn't saying Cleveland wouldn't look to move some of the pitching depth. I was asking why Cookie would be the piece moved by Cleveland. He is controlled for the same length of time as Bauer (& is cheaper) & after the AL CY vote is announced, Kluber will be making nearly twice the amount as Cookie (17M vs 9.75M). For a smaller market with payroll limitations, that raises the value of Cookie in comparison to both those guys. Trying to trade for Cookie would cost more than those other 2 players. IF you believe Salazar will return from injury to early 2016 pre-injury performance (& I am not confident he will), he would be the cheapest to acquire of the 4 (him, Kluber, Bauer, Cookie). As for Cleveland trading Mejia for bullpen help during 2018 (instead of OF help), the bullpen was a bigger mess this season. Many of the injured outfielders (L. Martin, T Naquin, & B Zimmer) look to be back in 2019 at some point. The main bullpen guys (A Miller & C Allen) are now free agents & most likely gone so Hand/ Cimber will be foundation pieces in 2019 and beyond.
  17. I understand the motivation to investigate a trade for Carlos Carrasco but please explain why Cleveland would be motivated to deal Cookie. Cookie still is under club control for 2 seasons (2019 & 2020) if Cleveland picks up the team options and each year Cookie is cheaper in cost than Kluber (controlled via contract/ team options in 2019, 2020 & 2021) or Bauer (2 arbitration years of 2019 & 2020 remaining, projected for a $11.6M deal in 2019)... It's not like Cleveland needs to rebuild or overhaul itself to remain competitive/ atop the AL Central in 2019.
  18. There is word that Paul might remain in the Twins organization in another role. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/10/twins-reportedly-fire-paul-molitor.html
  19. Its possible. While Paul has a link to the BlueJays by being a player, he doesn't have a link to the leadership of Shapiro or Adkins. Let's not forget that Derek Fawley (the Twins head guy) came from Cleveland & has close ties to Shapiro & Adkins...
  20. Wow. I am stunned by this move... I guess the Twins had a greater sense of themselves than I realized...
  21. Congrats to the Brewers on winning the division this year. I did not believe they would be successful enough this year to win the NL Central this year (or advance further) but the fact remains they were able to get the job done & complete the 1st step - making the playoffs by winning the division. Now 3 more steps remain: - Advance in the playoffs to the championship series - Advance to the World Series - Claim the WS Championship Good luck to the Brewers and their fans this October.
  22. Matt Arnold is in the mix for the Giants GM job.. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/09/giants-notes-gm-search-pence-hundley-holland.html According to Buster Olney on the BaseballTonight podcast last week the Giants started laying the groundwork for their GM search back as early as June 1...
  23. The playoff rosters can be altered between each round. If the 5th starter is more reliable than the 6th or 7th guy in the bullpen, WHY NOT have him on the WC roster & use him??
  24. Make it an "opener" game. Each starter gets 1 inning (1 thru 5) and has a clean slate when he enters. Then turn it over to JJ, Hader & the bullpen group for 4 innings. Let the chips fall & see where it lands.
  25. HA! That is exactly what happened to me, and I'm not even a big Beatles guy. Same. Bigger fan of Pink Floyd, The Who & The Kinks
