  1. I am not sure how well Crean could recruit. He had a few studs in Wade, James and McNeal, and got a very highly rated guy out of Illinois right after Wade graduated, but I cant for the life of me think of his name. He ended up being a bit of a bust and transferred out after 2 seasons, but he was a good get. However, he could never get a big man, and there were seasons where his classes were terrible. He left them with a hude hole at 4 and 5 this season. The one guy they have over 6'8" is very raw and is a freshmen, so who knows whats going to happen with him. Hopefully Buzz can get some good post players because you can only go so far with 3 players 6'0 and under and 6 guys that are 6'5"-6'7"
  2. I didnt get into excessive details until I had to, apparently, defend my posts. My third post had less information than my second. And yeah, players of the year are certainly the cream of the crop....but when 3/4 of them over the last 8 years go elsewhere, then I would say that, yeah, alot of them have been spurning them. I'm sorry, 4 good players in the last 8 doesn't sell me. But hey, maybe Maymom will help bring some more in....let's hope so.
  3. Dont let the facts get in the way of a good story, Paul. Dude, I just named like 11 of the best players in the state from recent years that didnt pick Marquette and 4 that did. What facts are you referring to exactly? As I stated before I am a much bigger MU fan and only in the past 2 years or so have I even cheered for UW, but UW fans have a very good point when they say Marquette fans, mainly students, have some big "we are better than you" attitude. Ha...I didnt want this to turn into a battle, but now it seems like I am leading the charge, and for a side that I wouldn't think I'd be on. Maymom is a great catch for Marquette. Hopefully in future years they will continue to get the best players from the state, but to argue they already have been, at least consistently, is absurd. Maymon wasnt even really a target until Crean left.
  4. I guess if you call two of the previous three state players of the year going to MU 'spurning', then yes, I guess you are right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif Cmon now, I am a much bigger fan of MU than I am of Wisconsin, but UW clearly was winning the battle for in state players lately. Tom Crean didnt even seem to bother recruiting them. Other than Diener, Novak, Matthews and Christopherson, thats about the best they have gotten in the past 6 or 7 years. Christopherson was actually co-player of the year, he tied with Keaton Nankavil, who of course went to Wisconsin. Meanwhile Brian Butch, Greg Stiemsma, Marcus Landy, Devin Harris, Tim Jarmuz, Trevon Hughes, etc. have gone to Wisconsin. Then you have guys like Jerry Smith, Diante Garrett, Korie Lucious, and probably Jamil Wilson who left the state all together. Looking at next years roster, Matthews is the only player from WI to even be on the team. I don't think its a stretch to say MU hasn't been getting the cream of the WI crop lately.
  5. I don't want to start an MU-UW war here, but Marquette got a committment from reigning state player of the year Jeronne Maymon out of Madison today. I saw him play in the state tournament and the guy is a monster. Big catch for Marquette especially considering the new coach and the fact that a lot of the best WI athletes have been spurning MU lately. My only question is MU ever going to recruit someone bigger than 6'8"?
  6. I think we should wait until after this draft to see what happens. I think we'll go with pitching in at least 4 of those top 6 choices, possible more. Obviously you can never have too much pitching, but if we get 3 solid prospects from this draft, maybe we can ask for one pitcher and some other positions of need (catching, second base). I have always thought LaPorta would replace Fielder, so it'll be nice if we can get a huge haul in return for Fielder.
  7. How long before the family sues thr Braves since it is clearly their fault.
  8. We did get a good haul for Sexson, and you're right it was Overbay not Sexson, but you see my point. We had to trade him because we had nowhere else to put Fielder, and everyone knew that, where as if he played in Oakland, they wouldnt have had to trade him. I thought we got hosed on the Overbay deal, personally. I just think that the DH is such a crap position. It takes away strategy, and it allows people with no defensive ability whatsoever (See David Ortiz) to continue to call themselves baseball players.
  9. I didnt go over the DH thread about Boston, so if this was included in the conversation, I apologize. But I was thinking about this the other night. Is being in the American League an advantage in trades for certain types of players? Lets say, for example, back when we had had Sexson with Fielder waiting in the wings. Everyone knew Fielder was going to replace Sexson eventually, so did that drive down Sexson's trade value? If we were in the American League and had a DH to put Fielder in and we didnt have to trade Sexson, perhaps teams would be more willing to give more to get him knowing we could keep him if the offer wasnt good enough. Similarly, a guy like Gamel, who has got major holes in his defense. His value would be way higher if he was on an American League team b/c you could stick him at DH....so knowing the Brewers have really nowhere to put him, assuming he doesn't stick at third, would we theorhetically get less in return if we traded him?
  10. why dont we take Jerel Mcneal? Seriously though....maybe we should take a chance and trade for a 1st rounder next year and an additional pick. Take a chance that the team you trade it too will have a terrible year and will get an even higher pick next year. I say trade everyone except Yi and Bogut..the team is going nowhere next year and theres no point in keeping Redd, Williams or Villanueva
  11. Where in the infield does he project to play?
  12. I dont want to see a prep pitcher, at least not with #16...they are just too risky, and considering how few pitching prospects we have in the system, I'd rather take a college pitcher, even if his ceiling isnt quite as high. The thing I see with high school pitchers, at least the ones we take.....are flame throwers who cant throw strikes and get hurt. Gallardo seems to be the lone exception. Neugebauer, Gold, Jones, Rogers, Jeffress (not hurt but other issues). None of them could throw strikes.
  13. 6 of the best 62 players....should be exciting...is ESPN televising the draft again this season?
  14. I'd love to see Jemile Weeks as well...especially with our lack of second basemen. I just think 16 is too high and the next pick we have is not high enough.
  15. I Agree.....if hes the best player available, then by all means. I just don't want them taking him thinking he'll be the bullpens savior this year.
  16. Baseball America has the Brewers taking Joshua Fields with the first pick. I was wondering how people feel about this. I have never been sold on taking a closer with the first round pick. I think it's shortsighted to take him thinking he will help considerably this season. Craig Hansen and Ryan Wagner make me think its too risky, plus I'd rather take a player with a very high ceiling. Even a high school position player. I just don't want to see another high school pitcher, at least not in round 1.
  17. Sheets' contract also was signed 4 years ago, though, so yeah, comparing his now to Sheets' then isnt accurate. All I was getting at was that Kazmir is more valuable then Sheets, in my opinion, but b/c of the economics of baseball, Sheets will make a ton more money.
  18. Although AAA may be a dumping ground I'd like to see Laporta there as soon as possible. I think the big difference is that AAA has a lot of pitchers have seen the majors, unlike AA, and that may be a better measuring tool for how well he will hit. The pitchers might not be a whole lot better, but I think major league experience makes them a bit more difficult to hit. Does that make sense? As far as Gamel goes, all i want to see is his defense improve. If he can stick at 3rd, I think we have found an amazing player. If he switches to the outfield, I think you have to lowe his value quite a bit, especially since we will have to make room for him by getting rid of someone. You cant have Braun, Hart, Laporta and Gamel playing on the same team if they are all outfielders.
  19. I am a little worried about this. Considering what he gave to acquire Scott Linebrink, I'd be concerned about what he'd give up to acquire a #1 or #2. You know any conversation with start with Gamel or Laporta, and would include Jeffress. I guess I'd wait to see what our draft looks like before I completely rule it out, but I agree, I would rather just sign Ben Sheets in the offseason for $15 million a year than to trade two prospects for a guy who pitches 2 months in Milwaukee. It would nice to see Sheets and Gallardo, healthy, in the same rotation.
  20. Too bad Sheets won't sign for that, especialy since Kazmir is better.
  21. My vote is Gamel. Braun Fielder Hart Gamel R/L/R/L. Lets see what he can do.
  22. he's either the future of the guy that brings talent for the future while Sabean definitely isn't the future. I think the Giants know they are a lot more than one pitcher away from being competitive. They have some good young pitching, but if you look at the position players, Aurilla, Durham, Vizquel, Winn, Rowand, Molina, thet certainly arent getting any younger. Their top prospects are all a ways away so there doesnt seem to be a whole lot of immediate help on the way. They are stuck with Zito's HUGE contract which is going to kill them in free agent signing for a few years. I think trading away Lincecum for 3 good solid hitting prospects is what they need to do. If they got, say, Gamel (or Laporta) Escobar and Gillespie plus maybe another young pitcher like Periard ( I just looked through the top 20 and see only 5 of our top 20 prospects are SP's, and one is Rogers...scary). All 3 of those guys could be in the majors within 2 years, and play on the cheap, for what, 5 years? I think the Giants would go for it if the return was good enough.
  23. Escobar isnt exactly tearing up Huntsville right now. I don't see the point of getting rid of Hardy just to make room for someone that offensively isnt even close to being major league ready. Hardy will still be cheap next year, so theres no reason to rush Escobar.
  24. San Francisco is not going to trade their best player anytime soon for prospects no matter how much upside they have. Not sure where these rumours started but they need to be out to bed. The asking price before Gallardo went down for the year would have been Gallardo. There is no other match even close on this team. The guy is a stud and they control him for several more years. That doesnt make any sense. Teams are always trading their best players for prospects. The Twins just traded the best pitcher in baseball for mostly prospects, and they are by no means throwing in the towel. Also, why, if the Giants were going to trade away a young major league pitcher, would they ask for basically the same thing in return? I think San Francisco would absolutely take prospects in return, but I agree with Peavy, Cain might be a more realistic target. Although with 6 early picks in June, this would be the year to trade prospects.
  25. Because as of right now they may have only one left handed power hitter, but they have no pitchers. Also, if Gamel can't stick at 3rd base, we don't really have anywhere to put him. I think its a lot easier to develop a lefthanded hitter than it is to develop a pitcher the calibur of Lincecum.
