  1. I can understand disliking Machado for being a jag (spiking first basemen, high slides, etc.), but I don't get the hate for his laziness. He plays in 156+ games every year, and it's likely that picking and choosing when to hustle has accounted for some of that. The outcome of a routine grounder is 99.9% likely to be unaffected by a player fully hustling down the line.
  2. Cabrera last year: .262/.316/.458, 2.7 WAR, 111 wRC+ Perez last year: .253/.290/.386, 0.6 WAR, 79 wRC+ Cabrera last three seasons combined: .274/.334/.456, 7.7 WAR, 114 wRC+ Perez last three seasons combined: .262/.294/.411, 2.4 WAR, 83 wRC+ Cabrera is a massive upgrade over Perez.
  3. Hiura might be up as early as a few weeks into the season. Perez/Saladino or even Dubon can hold down that spot just fine for that period of time. The Brewers are pretty close to $100 mil in payroll. Not sure what the ceiling is, but we've never seen it significantly higher than that to start a season. They probably have limited room, so spending a big chunk of it on a second baseman with Hiura's arrival imminent doesn't make sense.
  4. Yep, too late for this now. Brewers are stuck with Braun.
  5. Ugh. Dude walks everyone. No thanks.
  6. I would be happy with Estrada as a more cost effective option.
  7. I'll also say Gausman. Would be a pretty bold move, but I think Stearns goes bold.
  8. I think Gausman may be my top choice for the Brewers to acquire. There's a decent chance he'd be better than Archer, or at least close, at a much lower cost.
  9. Yeah I definitely think that's light.
  10. Hard to gauge what that would take when the Mets probably prefer to deal them separately.
  11. The Royals are not smart.
  12. Well yes, but cost is also a factor. He'll be far cheaper to acquire than any of those guys.
  13. Even in giving Woodruff a shot, the Brewers will need starting pitching depth. Suter is done, Davies might be for all we know, and nobody should be depending on Nelson.
  14. Happ has a solid FIP and a k/bb approaching 4, which is excellent. He'd be a solid get, but if the Yankees are giving up multiple guys in their top ten or something, just bail.
  15. It's not that he's waiting to make a move; it's that sellers generally wait until the deadline in hopes of offers increasing
  16. Better the Dodgers than the Phillies.
  17. I read somewhere the other day that they are 26th in quality starts though because they have a hard time going 6 innings. Relying on 4 innings from the bullpen five or six times a week is a recipe for disaster. THe bullpen is going to wear out. Currently they have three of the top ten relievers in innings pitched. Not sure where you're seeing three of the top ten, but Fangraphs has Hader at 14th, Jennings at 15th, and Jeffress at 19th in innings among relievers. And when you sort by appearances, only Jeffress and Jennings are in the top 100. Due to Counsell's strong handling of the bullpen (refusal to throw guys several days in a row, deferring instead to using them for longer stretches each appearance), I don't think the bullpen is at risk of wearing down any more than normal. Pitchers and coaches often refer to being worn out not just by innings, but also by simply getting up in the bullpen (even when they don't come in). The way Counsell uses his pen really limits those types of reps for Brewer relievers.
  18. 1. The signs also indicate the Yankees are now most likely to get Machado. 2. Using Burnes one day after he pitched two innings doesn't indicate he's gone in any way. It indicates they value his long term health and durability, just like they have with any young pitcher.
  19. Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun Come on, no way...
  20. Machado's bad defense certainly complicates his value. If they did acquire him, it feels like they'd almost need to recall Arcia as a late game defensive replacement. This has nothing to do with an imminent trade, but my goodness are the Orioles terrible at asset management. They would have gotten a ton more if they'd traded Arcia last year. Was it also last year that teams wanted to pay a boatload for Britton? They could have restocked their entire farm system on those two deals. Brutal.
  21. It's a no-risk move. If he's no good, they'll just release him. Don't see any reason to be disappointed.
  22. In theory I agree with trading veterans like Cain/Ramirez if the team is struggling, but if you trade big FAs early in their deals too often, you're going to have a tough time signing those players before too long.
  23. It sounds like Aguilar is going to make the team, which is pretty surprising/odd. Looking more likely that Taylor Williams gets a bullpen spot though, which I like.
