  1. I get it. But the pickings are somewhat slim at the positions where the Brewers have obvious holes. What is your ideal solution? Unless there is a Hader trade that solves our offensive ineptitiude I would probably just go the one year route with someone like Cron at first base and look for a similar guy at third. There is no way I would give a long term deal to a guy like Semien who has been a below average hitter nearly his whole career.
  2. Semien has had a wRC over 100 once in his career and that was his super fluky 2019. His value is all tied up in his defense which is always debatable. I just don't get why anyone would be excited at the prospect of paying big money to a player that has been below average offensively his entire career other than one season. This wouldn't move the needle for us offensively at all. Unless its a one year deal I would say no.
  3. Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances that destroyed our revenues we have no choice but to dumpster dive like last offseason. To be honest I am far more bothered that we took this same approach last offseason when we expected big crowds.
  4. Does defense matter at all because Vogelbach would probably be the worst defensive first baseman in the game. A right side of the infield of Hiura and Vogelbach would be amongst the worst defense the game has ever seen.
  5. We all waited for something meaningful to happen last offseason and it just never did.
  6. Besides his 2019 season which was a superstar level season how is Semien a sure fire difference maker. I'm fine with a one year deal but no way would I shell out a big contract for a player who has had one unbelievable season and one other season where his defense made up for subpar offense.
  7. I think its pretty obvious by now that we will be filling the rest of the roster with filler. We cut payroll last winter with the full expectations of big crowds and without that we are stuck with the scraps. I would be surprised to see any signings for more than 5 million or so. The lineup is probably going to look pretty similar to last years. We have to hope that Yelich is his MVP self and that Cain plays well. Third base will probably be filled by Urias and first base with either Vogalbach or a Smoak level free agent.
  8. I can't think of too many things that make less sense than the Brewers giving Ozuna a big long term contract and that is why I would be shocked if it happened.
  9. While leaving an enormous hole in the pen. They'd also be selling low on Garcia, which very much is not Stearns's MO. I'm also not sure what Ozuna is going to give you that Garcia cannot. Garcia has been a solid major league player for a substantial enough amount of time for me to believe that the player we say in 2020 is not who he actually is. I think we need to get out of this concrete "what have you done for me lately" mentality. Garcia is, in theory, a similar bat to Ozuna, but with much, much better defense. It just happens that Ozuna had a much better year offensively last year, so the assumption is he's a much better player, when the reality of the situation, at least IMO, is that they are closer in talent level than the above thought leads one to believe. I want no part of Ozuna but Garcia has been a below average player most of his career. He has had two good seasons with the rest of his career being bad and I'm sure the Brewers would take nothing in return just to get rid of that contract.
  10. Fact is we have produced very little position player talent since Stearns took over and thats why every offseason we are stuck signing the likes of Peterson. The minor league system should be providing talents better than this. I get that its a minor league signing but we are probably going to be starting a player like this like we did last season. The pitching draft picks and trades have been tremendous and a huge improvement over the previous GM but this lineup was terrible last season and probably will be again. Clearly this team has little to no money to spend (we cut payroll last offseason before the revenue hits occured) so it would be nice if our minor league system could provide some position players.
  11. Take a look at the mlb.com top 30 international prospects for this year. Every infielder is listed as a shortstop. The positions seem to have more to do with the “best player on the high school team plays shortstop” phenomenon than any selection by the Brewers outside the norm. Maybe one day we will see a few of these players be successful but we have done an awful job over probably the last 20 plus years in regards to our international signings.
  12. Which power hitting 1B or 3B (that was available at the Brewers selection) do you think they missed out on in the 1st round the past five years? Your hot take sounds great until you actually take 5 minutes to look at the 1st rounds the past several years. So there are never any players that project to hit for power when the Brewers pick. Its not even just the first round we never seem to pick guys with a plus power tool.
  13. When was the last time this team drafted a power hitting third or even first baseman for that matter. I guess Erceg fit the bill at the time but Stearns is not nearly focused enough on power at the corner positions.
  14. We focus way too much on middle infielders in the draft as well as our international signings yet somehow other than Hiura we have nothing to show for it. Melvin was too focused on building a beer league softball team and Stearns is way too obsessed with middle infielders and athleticism often ignoring the all important hit and power tools.
  15. From what I can tell, Montgomery was hired as scouting director in November 2014 & promoted to the front office in September 2016, so he was scouting director for two drafts. 2015 produced Grisham & a whole lot of nothing, 2016 was two big whiffs in Ray & Erceg before Feliciano in the 2nd & Burnes in the 4th. Montgomery literally blew the biggest pick of the Stearns tenure. Also, since we're talking about scouting directors, you kind of ghosted on the Ray Montgomery thread awhile back. Still curious how you feel our drafts have suffered greatly since he left when he really only ever drafted two guys in Grisham/Burnes, maybe a third in Feliciano, & also blew the highest pick we've had since Stearns & company got here taking Ray 5th overall? Stearns was the one making the first round picks. He focuses almost exclusively on middle infielders, athletic outfielders, and college pitchers. Montgomery has a great reputation from his time running the DBacks drafts to his time in Milwaukee.
  16. Stearns is obsessed with weak hitting middle infielders. He signs a bunch of them every offseason and drafts them each year as well.
  17. This is a major loss that few will even think about. Montgomery did a great job as the scouting director and our drafts have suffered greatly since he was promoted out of that position. I think the team made a big mistake promoting Arnold to GM instead of Montgomery who was our most indispensable front office employee outside of Stearns.
  18. If this does indeed come to fruition which would be incredibly disappointing I would give the GM job to Ray Montgomery who has a sterling reputation in scouting and drafted both Woodruff and Burnes.
  19. I could see something like this but I like Lutz more than Haseley.
  20. Wouldn't even consider this deal.
  21. Yelich (112 wRC+), Hiura (87 wRC+), Garcia (81 wRC+), Narvaez (59 wRC+) & Urias (66 wRC+) all hit well below their projections in 2020 & will likely all project for significant positive regression in 2021. Having Cain for a full season should help too. That's 2/3rds of the lineup that should see notable improvement by doing nothing at all (except maybe getting a new hitting coach). Besides Yelich and Hiura I don't see one other hitter that we can count on. If Braun comes back he will help but I don't think we can count on him playing all that often. It would be a big mistake to expect anything from Garcia who has been good two seasons in his career and was a complete waste of 10 million per season.
  22. Is the offense not bad enough as it is. I think trading Hiura would be crazy. Curious how you think the team addresses its needs this off season, then, if you've eliminated free agency as a possibility due to your assume budget constraints, and if you won't trade assets that they could potentially use instead? They aren't going to improve the offense by trading one of the two good hitters on the roster. Hader is probably going to be traded if we can get good value and beyond that I have no idea what Stearns is going to do but thats why he gets paid the big money. Years of drafts that aren't producing position players have left us in a bad position. I expect a bunch of cheap signings that hopefully work out better than they did this season. I don't blame ownership for cutting payroll when we have no idea what the revenue streams will look like going forward but for sure we are in a difficult position. Its nice that we finally have the makings of a very good pitching staff but the offense was terrible and its not going to be easy to rectify the situation with no money to spend.
  23. The Brewers are never taking on a contract like Arenado has.
  24. Is the offense not bad enough as it is. I think trading Hiura would be crazy.
  25. The payroll is more likely to be 70 million than 100. Expect many teams to be cutting payroll especially small markets. I would be shocked if our payroll is anywhere near 100 milion.
