  1. That's the point though. It wasn't a coin toss to start Jennings tonight. It was a decision based on analytics that said you need to start Carpenter with a lefty. Did that same data say it was OK to have Carpenter face a righty with a man on in the third? I doubt it. That lack of consistency is what is being questioned. CC is a fine manager, but this was weird.
  2. You know what's funny. If he puts in Cedeno and Cedono gives up the hit (like Jennings did so many times) a chunk of posters would be ripping it saying Peralta was rolling well, why not just let him go. Of course not saying the same folks would've said it, but CC can't win with everybody unless he learns how to magically predict which reliever is gonna give up hits on a given day It's not a personal attack on CC if someone disagrees with something he does. You're right, different factions are going to have different opinions.
  3. Almost like lefties help neutralize Carpenter! To the tune of an .850 OPS... Then why start Jennings?
  4. You know, the overreacting goes both ways. I didn't see anything over the top. Questioning the moves in an important game seems prudent. I didn't see any sky is falling posts, though. But I do see a whole lot of condescension not getting called out the way it was when it was going the other way.
  5. Bolding it doesn't make your point more salient. With a runner on, the right move was to bring in a lefty. Worry about later later.
  6. This all goes back to our need for better starting pitching. A game like this just so Anderson can save face.
  7. Because it had nothing to do with not trusting Peralta to face Carpenter. Very simply, if you're going Johnny Wholestaff, why not use a lefty to face the opponents best LH hitter to start the game. And the reason the choice was Jennings is because he's the one you don't mind burning on one hitter. Exactly! Instead we have him face a righty with a runner on.
  8. If you didn't trust Peralta to face Carpenter to lead off the game, why would you trust him to face him in the third with a runner on?
  9. Having Peralta face Carpenter with a man on is not an acceptable deviation.
  10. Seems plenty sufficient and prudent, all by itself Yeah, but that alone cannot be the plan.
  11. I'm just not sure what the plan is here other than not wanting Anderson to start.
  12. Yea, no need to parse words I thought you were right the first time. No question CC is involved in these discussions every day, but I would be shocked if this idea didn't originate from the front office. The original post ("This almost certainly wasn't Counsell's decision.") made it seem like the poster was saying that this was an edict from on high that this happen. I do agree that the analytics folks thought it up and brought it forward. That is what they get paid to do but in the end, this was absolutely CC's decision. I doubt there was much debate because CC is on board with the analytical approach or, as noted, he wouldn't be here.
  13. Yeah, I think he did. I don't think any part of that line of thought is accurate. If they didn't like what CC was doing they would just fire him and put someone in place who thinks like they do. Generally speaking, the front office has very little to do with game to game strategy.
  14. No, he had some prospect cred.. Maybe not this much but he was pretty well regarded.
  15. So why announce it now? The Cards will just Move Carpenter out of the lead off spot. This seems senseless to me unless there is an underlying issue that isn't public.
