  1. THat is not too tin hat-ish. Maybe the guy has a connection at the agency?
  2. Plus, the poster that posted the info here has one post. For all we know, that poster is Mr. Rydquist attempting to draw people to his twitter page. That sort of screams shenanigans as well. I like the detective work. I'll add in. The poster in question joined the forum on Fri Feb 09, 2018 12:19 am according to their profile. Does that give it a little more validity? I'll let people decide for themselves! Yeah, that is a level of cynical I haven't gotten to yet.
  3. We are getting Cobb at 4 years and $73M
  4. I'm not bought in but who knows.
  5. I would say that the way the Giants were able to squeeze in Watson and stay below the luxury tax would be a bigger fish to fry than proving the legitimacy of a $49 million contract. But who knows. A lot of MLB enforcement seems entirely complaint-based. I wouldn't put it past the Cubs to call foul on the Brewers if it got to that point. The Cubs will have their own luxury tax kabuki to deal with in the near future. I doubt they want anyone to have a reason to be looking for retaliation. Then again, you are right in that the enforcement part is weird so who knows.
  6. That would be brilliant but I'd guess MLB would clamp down on any attempts to subvert. In either case, I thought I had read where that draft pick wasn't a deal breaker type of issue for them. I bet you could skirt by and not have MLB stop it. The odds a player gets a QO and then signs for near $50mil is unlikely. MLB can’t really prove you are trying to sneak under unless it’s millions upon millions of easy to get incentives. As long as the player accepts the contract what is there to argue? Teams intentionally do things to avoid vesting options and to me that is much much worse. Would it cause incentives to be included when considering if it is >$50mil in the next CBA, maybe. Well sure, that would assume the player is going to sign a contract that would include those incentives and not guaranteed salary. I also have no idea how MLB views incentives in terms of the actual value of the contract. Those may be assumed and part of the total contract.
  7. That would be brilliant but I'd guess MLB would clamp down on any attempts to subvert. In either case, I thought I had read where that draft pick wasn't a deal breaker type of issue for them.
  8. That seems to be what they are signaling. I don't think the FO sees this as a win now season as much as we do.
  9. I agree with you completely! To be a legit solid playoff contender, at least one staff upgrade is needed. I guess it just kind of bothers me that people feel that if it doesn't happen, the team will automatically be a bottom dweller and deadline seller. I mean, this isn't a "bottom of the barrel" staff as constructed. The sky is far from falling. Who said anything about a bottom dweller. I, and most others, think this is a fringe playoff team that could be more with a couple of additions.
  10. I get your frustration, but you're probably overstating how dire the pitching situation is. Because if it is that bad, adding Arrieta or Cobb isn't going to make that much of a difference. I think the reality right now is, given the "on-paper" offensive improvement and the current pitching staff, the Brewers are a fringe playoff contender. The theoretical offensive improvement and slotting Chacin into the rotation should come close to equalling out the loss of Nelson for half the year. BUT ... that is assuming we don't see multiple core players regress significantly. Adding Cobb or Arrieta solidifies them as a firm playoff contender. No, not really. As it stands at the moment its OK, but if Anderson or Davies go down we are screwed. And pitcher injuries happen every year. That's unacceptable to me on the backs of signing LoCain and dealing a bunch of prospects for Yelich. I would guess that management is waiting to see if Arrieta or Cobb sign here before executing a trade, but if not it's pretty disappointing. Joey, why is that every time someone starts talking the reality of the situation they are either pessimistic or frustrated? If this team was serious then they would have built the roster such that Woodruff would be the sixth starter going into the season with the likes of Gallardo/Miley/Suter/Wilkerson providing depth ONLY.
  11. What news? This is Haudricourt's speculative quote: "The Brewers haven't announced when they expect Nelson to return to the rotation but somewhere around the all-star break in mid-July would appear to be a good possibility." I get that you are trying to make a pessimistic point, but you're still making a bit of a jump. I do agree that they need another pitcher, though. Why is that pessimistic? Do you have information to the contrary? Is saying he will be back around the ASB unrealistic in any way? If he is back around the ASB are you expecting him to be 2017 Nelson the minute he steps on the hill? If not, how long would it take, a month? Two? By that time the team is either going to be out of it or they will have made a move to get more pitching. It's not a pessimistic point, it's a realistic point. I don't think Haudricourt's report is as nearly speculative as you make it sound. It's not that hard to map out a trajectory that has him back on the mound in games at the ASB. Maybe I'm misreading the level of condescension in your post but I fail to see the pessimism or the jump.
  12. With the news today that Nelson is probably out until after the ASB, they really need to sign a pitcher. Wouldn't be surprised if Nelson is just a non-factor this year.
  13. You dont see us adding Cobb? I have no reason to believe we are in any better position to sign Cobb than any other team. We may sign him but it is just as likely another team signs him. There has never been any credible indication that we were all that heavily involved on him.
  14. So Twins GM says they have their roster and we believe it completely. Stearns says the exact same thing and it's just double talk? Cobb would fit the bill but I just don't see it happening.
  15. Yeah, we all get that. I was referring to the post I quoted about long stretches or inactivity.
  16. I go Williams and I don't think it is particularly close. The guy was getting Billy Wagner comps before the arm injury and he seems to be back. I honestly thing he is the best kept secret in the organization. I like Houser but I think he is a step or two down from Williams and I actually like Lopez as a reliever more than most do. Peralta has the worst stuff of that group.
  17. Exactly, and compared to Sogard......well, it really isn't comparable.
  18. This is what we keep coming back to. Great, the offense is better. Is it better than the top five or six teams in the league? Because the pitching isn't so if the offense isn't either then this is a marginal playoff team at best.
  19. So what? The point being made was that the offense could be great. My response was "compared to what?". Those other teams have equal or better offenses. It doesn't matter how that situation got to be, all the matters is that it exists. I'm not worried about where the rebuild is "supposed" to be, I'm concerned with where it actually is. I think Stearns deserves a whole lot more credit than he gets, no question. I think everybody on here is excited about the future or they wouldn't be on here. Having said that, why can't a fan want to compete for a title in 2018 AND in the future? That isn't a binary choice. You're not a bad or ignorant fan if you want to win now any more than you are a smarter fan if you want to build for sustained success. Signing a guy like Cobb improves the team to win now without mortgaging the future.
  20. It is a message board where people go to post things like this. I swear there are quite a few posters on this board that feel they have to comment on every single thread; even if they do not like it. Hint: you do not. Aren't you doing the same thing by policing the board? You're not a moderator. If it's inappropriate, the moderators will take care of it. You don't have to respond either and you do have the option to block other posters if they bother you.
  21. If they hurt themselves, there's nothing the MLBPA can do to protect them. No one will offer them a contract (depending on the injury, of course). I thought I read they were providing insurance for those that participated. Maybe I'm wrong.
  22. Not picking on you personally, but Arrieta stinks in Baltimore and goes to Chicago and becomes a star who people want to sign as a FA; however, Anderson goes from ARI to MIL, has a very good year and a half stretch, but "overachieved" and is due for regression. Why are players on other teams who improve later in their career stars who we want, but when Brewers improve they overachieve and are due for regression? I agree with this, but some Brewer fans have a Chicken Little complex. The sky is going to fall and our team will eventually lose, because, well, we're the Brewers. To be fair, there isn't much evidence to the contrary.
  23. Same thing we're likely to do every year. Hope that results on the field surpass what's on paper. The Brewers are likely to never look like one of the best 1-2 teams in February/March. Now it's Cubs, Dodgers, Nats. Down the road, it may be the Cards, DBacks, Braves, Mets....who knows. That's ok. If they can build a really good team and sustain it, then they will at least be in the hunt every year. Lots of things can happen then. Key injuries/bad performance by other contenders, better performance from our own players, and always the option of picking up firepower at the break. Plus, the Brewers are still way too difficult to project. Yelich/Cain help projections on offense but you still have Arcia, Pina, and Villar/2B who are really difficult to project. Even guys like Shaw, Thames, Santana. In fact, do we even know what we'll get out of Braun? Pitching is even tougher to project. Davies/Chacin you pretty much know what you're getting, after that it gets real tough. And the BP isn't any easier. But they were never going to be as good as those other teams on paper this year, even if they do sign a Cobb or Arrietta. That's depressing.
  24. Not many have more walks than K's in all of baseball..... His OBP was way better than most last season, as well. I'm not sure why people don't appreciate Sogard more. He does very well in his role (or at least a bench role). Would we rather have another K machine that might hit 20 HR in the line-up with a weak glove and mental lapses? Seems to me that DS is moving away from that all or nothing hitting approach by signing Cain and trading for Yelich. Why? That is pretty much the only time in his career when he has put up those numbers. He never walked more than he struck out until last year and his OBP last year is an extreme outlier compared to the rest of his career where he struggles to get to a .300 OBP. He has never performed like he did during that stretch and he probably never will again. I lose zero sleep if he gets cut today. My outlook for this team wouldn't change one iota.
