  1. They have the resources to fix whatever ails them and signing Darvish allows them to mitigate that risk by spreading it to other facets of the team. They will be formidable and, rightly, the consensus favorite to win the division.
  2. That's baseball, and these guys are professionals that get that. I doubt Stearns is worried about what Gallardo or Miley thinks if they sign Cobb. That'd be a pretty poopy way to go about your business. You need filler FA's to sign for depth and none will if you make it a standard practice to lie to them about their opportunities. I highly doubt that doesn't factor in at some level. I'd put the chances of a significant pitching acquisition at about 40% right now.
  3. I don't think they are really in on anyone bit or small. They are going into spring training telling guys they have a shot at starting and then what? They sing a different guy and tick everyone off? What you see is what you are going to get.
  4. So, is this an indication they need more depth at AAA because they are going to be losing potential pieces at that level and need the arm or just a depth pickup or does DS view this as a value option for the opening day rotation?
  5. Way too many "ifs". The problem is that we are not competing against hypothetical definitions of where a pitcher slots in to a rotation. We are competing against teams that have better, deeper rotations than we do. I'm not even convinced we have the second or third best rotation in the division much less the league. if you are expecting to compete you don't go into the season hoping guys like Wilkerson and Suter can hold down the fifth spot.
  6. Welcome to the board! I think I'm right in lien with your thought process.
  7. They do, several of them. They just call it something different.
  8. You are trying to tell me that a 23-year-old SS can't improve with the bat. And I'm missing the point? Plus Arcia's defense is lightyears ahead of anything Adames is going to provide. I'm not saying that improvement isn't possible. I just see the red flag of Arcia's Colorado Springs numbers, the fact that his slightly above average 2017 OPS of .731 was mostly because he posted an OPS of .848 for June (no other month in his career has been over .759), and while I a, hoping for improvement, I don't know how much it will be, or if it will happen. Adames offers a higher floor offensively, and superior OBP skills plus more pop. Maybe not as good on defense, but I think the offense makes up for it. He had an OPS of .776 at Durham, a much less hitter-friendly park than Colorado Springs. So what is his OPS if you leave in June and take out his worst month? That logic isn't logical. You can't cherry pick. What about his 100 point jump in OPS from his rookie year to this past year? Are you saying the difference between Biloxi an CS means more than what he has done at the major league level?
  9. I'd pursue if the starting pitching was fixed first and/or in conjunction with acquiring Colome.
  10. Agreed. He's the second addition to solidify the staff, but you'd want more to make a legit run. Something like Anderson/Archer/Davies/Corbin/Chacin or Arietta/Anderson/Davies/Corbin/Chacin to start the year seems like a rotation that could contend with this offense. You generally don't seem to have much confidence in Woodruff. I'd prefer Woodruff to Corbin, at least with Woodruff you have some upside. Plus even though we are trying to contend, we have to try and establish our prospects in the majors. I'd only target Corbin if we strike out everywhere else or if Woodruff is being included in a package for someone else. Corbin is a better option than Suter/Guerra/the other AAAA caliber pitchers we have...he's not a better option than Woodruff in my opinion. I would argue that Corbin is a better option right now. Having said that, I'm not underselling Woodruff but you have to have something in reserve and having a pitcher the caliber of Woodruff as your six is a great option.
  11. Agreed. He's the second addition to solidify the staff, but you'd want more to make a legit run. Something like Anderson/Archer/Davies/Corbin/Chacin or Arietta/Anderson/Davies/Corbin/Chacin to start the year seems like a rotation that could contend with this offense. Exactly. My only quibble would be that if they trade for Archer I don't think they make another trade. I think you'd replace Corbin with Cobb or Lynn in that situation.
  12. Corbin's FIP and ERA+ were both better than Davies' last year. I've said it before, and I'll emphasize it again: Corbin's 2017 ERA+ is better than the ZiPS projections for every single pitcher on the staff, including Anderson. I wouldn't even consider a trade of Santana for him straight up, but he'd be a solid 3 on our staff and would undeniably make us better. Even so, I'm just not sure that is how I use Santana. To me, a Corbin acquisition makes more sense if they sign Arietta but not as the marquee pitching acquisition.
  13. I agree that Suter has his role to play. I'm certainly not suggesting that they jettison the guy but there is no way I go into a season where I am trying to compete and feel comfortable with him locked in as my number five. I'm sure there is an example or two of a guy with Suter's stuff excelling but those are kind of exceptions that prove the rule.
  14. Right after the Yelich/Cain deals I was pretty adamant that they need two more SP's. I've come around on that and think that if they keep Woodruff I'm OK with him in the five slot and adding one pitcher. I'm sure what his value is to be perfectly honest.
  15. Seriously, why is it you have to stoop to this level every chance you get. Says a lot about your ability to defend your position when this is all you have. So if someone has a differing opinion they are depressed? Stellar logic there. Fact is, the Cubs were better and just took another pretty big step forward. Saying "yeah, but we have Brent Suter" isn't going to cut it. Make that argument on a neutral board and see how quickly you get blown up. Lol this is all I have? Come on man. Step away from the keyboard every once in awhile. You go one minute from saying that Darvish isn’t realistic for the Brewers and that he will never go there, to jumping off the deep end that he signed with the Cubs. The Brewers will continue on with their plan and not get themselves into financial messes. We all know what we sign up for being a Brewers fan. It includes realizing the downfalls of being in a small market. Just fuels the fire to try to knock off the Cubbies just that much more. Lovable losers, no more. Like I said in a different post, the Brewers are a better team today than they were a year ago and definitely two years ago. No one went off the deep end and you are still defending your position with passive aggression. Just because I knew he wasn't coming here doesn't mean he isn't a very good pitcher. Them signing him is a blow to the Brewers, no question. The Brewers may be better but they aren't good enough. That might be enough for you but it's not acceptable for me.
  16. The Cubs waited a long time for this. The Brewers have to wait for their time, too. It's the impulsive mistakes the Cubs made over 10 years ago that buried them for years, and similar mistakes that buried the Brewers when they should have had a great 10-year run. The Brewers' day will come. Trying to win all the time usually just guarantees perpetual mediocrity, especially in a small market. I'm proud of the work they've done to make themselves a clear wild-card contender without compromising their 5-year outlook much at all. The Brewers have to wait for their time? That is all they ever do. The times they have actually accomplished something are the times they stepped up and made aggressive moves to win, they didn't wait. They are never going to win if they never play the game. Acquiring an upgrade in pitching doesn't mean the have to be impetuous or overzealous or that they are giving away the future. I believe Stearns can be smart AND upgrade the roster.

  18. It's the opposite of hopes and prayers IMO. It's actually based on a whole lot of sound analytics and rational moves instead of impulsive ones. They're maximizing value and the wins will continue to come without compromising the future. You have to be very confident you're getting a significant upgrade before paying premiums in free agency and trade. When you've got a bunch of ~1.5-2 WAR guys, you can't count on second and third tier free agents to be a significant upgrade. They'll be fine. Yelich and Cain are terrific. Braun is a big upgrade over Aguilar at 1b. Opportunities to get more pitching will arise. They aren't going to spend the first 3 months with a roster built for tanking that won by accident. Yeah, we can shout "we weren't impulsive like you" form the sidewalk along the Cub parade route. Tis but a flesh wound.
  19. Probably gonna get your wish. Looks like they are going to head into the season on hopes and prayers.
  20. I'm starting the think they make a trade first. Depending on the salary they take back in that trade may be a determining factor in who they may or may not go after as a free agent.
  21. Yeah, where is that one? This is the first I've heard about it. That trade would be very palatable, depending on who else is included. I dug a little deeper and I don't think it's real. I am seeing a lot of smoke around something going down with the Rays though from various sources (no, not inside sources).
  22. Hey, Cool! We have analytical analysis board.
  23. Are the Domingo/Ortiz to the Rays for Archer rumors for reel?
  24. It they were, we'd have a pitcher or two by now.
  25. Guerra's "ability" produced a 4 WAR in 2016 which was good enough to earn the opening day starter in 2017. Suter produced a 1.8 WAR in basically half a year's innings in 2017. Brewers won the last 6 games Suter started in the heat of a playoff race and were 9-5 overall in his starts. In 2016, the Brewers were 14-6 in the games Guerra started. Dismissing either as simply "filler" doesn't do them justice. I'd say both are useful, either in the rotation or the pen and quite possibly more than that. Woodruff showed flashes but he's not established. He's definitely in the mix but it's not a disaster if he starts the year in AAA either because the other two beat him out in spring. Those two are the definition of rotation filler. Starting the season with those two in the rotation is a horrible decision. If you're going to point back to 2016 in defense of Guerra then you have not problem with Villar starting at second, right? No way I expend the resources they have this off season and then point to a pitchers stats from two years ago and say, "yeah, that should work". Suter is a nice guy to have, maybe a good swingman/depth guy. He is not a starting pitcher. Suter is the Sogard of the pitching staff.
