  1. Based on that list it seems pretty much like a crap shoot to me. That list spans many scouting regimes and/or philosophies.
  2. True dat *sigh* But we keep missing on arms. That is the real bummer behind this. We have the 5th pick and instead of investing it in an arm that could be franchise changing, we went for a light-hitting outfielder. Outfielders are a dime a dozen but here we are, searching for the game changers in our rotation, again. That was probably true more so in the past than it is now. We weren't the only team to pass on those arms. I truly believe they made the pick they thought was best. Every GM is going to miss on a pick or trade here and there. By-and-large, Stearns has proven to be a really good GM in my opinion.
  3. True, but they can't really afford to miss on a guy that was the #5 pick in the draft. He still has time, but being a college draftee, time is starting to not be on his side. I think you can. It looks like Lutz was a real steal from this past draft. Having him step up and kind of erase that potential mistake the year before. Sure, we would like to make the perfect pick every time around but this kind of thing is not unique to the crew in any way.
  4. Yeah, we are going to have to pay a premium for him.
  5. Here's the requisite February "this is the year I turn it around" story on Corey Ray http://www.the3rdmanin.com/corey-ray-brewers-bounce-back/ The the Brewers' defense, Ray was considered one of the safest picks of that draft, as he had shown considerable upside. If the Brewers hadn't picked him at #5, there was no way he would have fallen more than 2-3 more spots. The health of the Brewers' system needs Ray to start fulfilling his potential, and quick. If this team is going to be a contender for the next several seasons, he needs to be valuable currency for potential moves. Well sure, so does Grisham, so does Kirby, and so on. We obviously want everyone of these guys to excel. Unfortunately that sometimes happens on a timeline we don't like and sometimes it happens not at all.
  6. Well, they are morons. Haha, true. I would offer both Darvish and Arrieta 5 yrs, $120-$125 mil and see if either takes it... Otherwise move on. I think I'd go more on Darvish than I would on Arietta. Some folks on these threads are starting to convince me we have better pitching than I think we do. Darvish is what makes sense then.
  7. I hope all those Cub fans who are convinced they're getting Yu for 4/90 see that. I honestly cant believe those morons to the South think they would land Darvish for anything less than $100 mil. Well, they are morons.
  8. It seems like your saying that every FA pitcher that doesn't sign with their old team is damaged goods? I don't think the Cubs are all that desperate for a starter either. The Cubs are looking for a top pitcher, and Arrieta is only three years removed from winning the Cy Young, and was still good last year. The Cubs have money, which would be the main reason a team doesn't sign their own good FA pitcher, so what is the problem? The things I can think of are: 1) They think Darvish is much better and want to do what they can to get him (except pay the staggering asking price). But if that were the case you'd think there would be more hints that the Cubs were keeping dialogs going for Arrieta, if they don't land Darvish. 2) Arrieta's agent is asking way more than the Cubs are willing to pay and won't budge. 3) There's some bad blood for some reason (like for not getting a long extension a couple of years ago), but usually those things get leaked out. 4) The Cubs expect Arrieta to be a shell of his former self very soon. I'd say there is more evidence to support 1 or 2 than there is for 4.
  9. Sure, as maybe a four but not a two.
  10. I think this is a fair statement. I would go a step further and say the Brewers and Twins probably have the best offer on the table currently. I am guessing until the Dodgers are officially out, the Cubs will keep their offer lower and only up it if it becomes apparent the Dodgers are out and the Cubs are now his desired destination. I think location plays a role too. If my only options were in places I didn't want to be, then I'd wait it out too.
  11. It seems like your saying that every FA pitcher that doesn't sign with their old team is damaged goods? I don't think the Cubs are all that desperate for a starter either.
  12. For that price I'd be a VERY hard no!
  13. Yeah, I guess I could buy that this team is maybe better in totality. Even with Yelich and Cain I don't think that combo strikes the same kind of fear that a prime Braun and Fielder did. I don't think the starting rotation on this team is better but I think the bullpen probably will be. Certainly the defense is leaps and bounds better. At the end of the day, I think both teams were/are incomplete.
  14. The longer it drags out the longer Milwaukee feels like the right fit. I just can't get my head around why he wouldn't have singed already if he really wanted to be here and the team really wanted him here.
  15. Part of me is questioning whether the Cubs really want to add another starter. They have Lester/Hendricks/Quintana at the top. They singed Chatwood to start and they seem to like Montgomery to close out the rotation. They know they have arbitration issues coming up. I think they are just trying to keep him out of Milwaukee believe it or not. I think LA is the only real place for him with Maybe Minnesota creeping in. I'd be fine with him in Minnesota.
  16. Why does everyone think they are going to sign Walker? Did I miss something there? Mets were the only other obvious suter and they chose to sign Frazier to slide Cabrera to 2B. Fair enough. I would still say go with Villar to start. Any available resources should be put into pitching at this point. I would think a decent upgrade at second would be an easier mid season fix than trying to nab pitching. I can't even remember what Walker cost us to be honest.
  17. Right, but we can make reasonable inferences, right? I'm not writing anyone off and Anderson had a great second half but do we write off the fact that the three years prior.....not so much? In other words, I think it's more reasonable to think of Anderson as a 3/4 than to assume he is the exception to the rule and broke out the second half of last year. Sure, every year is different and lots of different things can happen. That doesn't mean you plan for the most optimistic outcome for each of those things. That means you understand the risks involved and take measures to mitigate those risks. By the way, I am not knocking Anderson. I just think of him like I did Marcum. He is a really good three on a championship caliber team. Problem is, he is our one right now.
  18. Why does everyone think they are going to sign Walker? Did I miss something there?
  19. And all of those lineups have regression candidates as well.............. Sure, but you can't go into the season assuming there's will regress and ours won't. Those lineups are better with a more proven track record of success. I also think those lineups/rosters are deeper and those teams have more resources that all help to mitigate that regression. The only way this team can mitigate against that kind of risk is to spread the risk around. I think they have done a great job of improving the lineup and the defense. I think they have made some very astute signings for the pen (I also think Houser and Williams are sneaky good). The rotation is the weak link and improving that only helps to further spread that risk and keeps the team from being dependent on any one aspect of the game.
  20. So what's the goal then? That seems like an awful lot of eggs in a single basket. What is the offensive drop off from Santana to Thames/Aguilar? How is that offset by improving a spot in the rotation with a Salazar or Archer?
  21. Maybe I simply undervalue Anderson and Davies but I just don't see those two leading a championship rotation. I also think that every time these conversations come up we fail to mention that Nelson is not a part of this team at the moment. That production has to be replaced. It's not simply a matter of just replacing the sucky parts of the rotation with mediocrity. They also need to replace pretty darn good starter.
  22. I'm not saying it's a bad lineup. The question is how does it look when compared to the competition. Do you put that lineup over the Cubs? The Dodgers? The Nationals? If there isn't major regression from the top five or six spots, sure, that is a good lineup. I still don't know that I'd say it's better then the teams I mentioned. For the most part those lineups have players with longer track records. They just don't have the question marks we do. And even if you do say it's better do you put the current rotation up against Kershaw/Hill/Wood/Maeda? How about Scherzer/Stasburg/Gonzalez? How about Lester/Quintana/Hendricks/Darvish (probably)? I know I'd feel a lot better about matching up a rotation of Arietta/Nelson (assuming health)/Anderson/Salazar with those groups. I'd be far more confident in that than Anderson/Nelson/Davies/Chacin. Sorry if that isn't upbeat enough but I can't help but feel that the excitement of the offensive acquisitions is muted by the failure to improve the pitching. Maybe that changes and I will certainly have a different outlook if it does but at this point the team is what it is.....speculation aside.
  23. I'm with you. It's been a while since we've this much to look forward to. Having said that, the pitching still scares me a little bit. If Nelson were healthy then I'd feel better but he isn't and there is no guarantee he will be. I don't think they need Kershaw, but they need improvements.
  24. Is that to me? If so I'm not sure what the issue is. You made a comment that someone speculated on this a week ago. I simply pointed out that this board has been speculating on this for months. What is offensive about that? Not offensive, it just came across as unnecessarily critical, as if the fact that it has been discussed here for some time was reason for me to not express my amusement that Nightingale is reporting it now as if it's "news". I mean it really didn't matter if it had been a week, a month or a year - he's still not breaking news in the way that he's pretending to, and I find that funny... I apologize if I misinterpreted your intent in the comment. I was just responding the two comments above mine. As in "a week ha ha, try three months ha ha". Relax. If everyone is going to take offense to every little thing that is posted this is going to get ugly real quick.
  25. Guys coming on at an age like his are the exception, not the rule...that's undeniable. He could be Guerra, or he could be Arrieta-lite who's adjustments stick and are incredibly effective. Like Guerra, his sustained success relies heavily on him maintaining that velocity. 95-96 instead of 90-92 makes everything else play up. I don't think Anderson will flame out completely but I don't think I count him as an ace. I'm not even sure I view him as 2 going into the season. They need more pitching.
