  1. I'm sorry - I'm not trying to be critical in return but was that really necessary...? Is that to me? If so I'm not sure what the issue is. You made a comment that someone speculated on this a week ago. I simply pointed out that this board has been speculating on this for months. What is offensive about that?
  2. Hmmmm... didn't someone here speculate that almost a week ago...? I think people have been speculating that on this forum for about half a year now when it was reported the Cubs seemed unlikely to resign him. A quick look at the OP of this very thread, which was before Thanksgiving will tell you that this was not a new concept a week ago.
  3. That'll be hard to do if he is the odd man out and squeezed for playing time. His value isn't going up if he isn't playing everyday and thus not seen as a regular.
  4. You're absolutely right and I'm sure there are other catchers that Yu prefers to throw to. I don't fall into the camp that believes they are actively seeking another catcher. Maybe down the road but not now.
  5. Didn't that happen except the catcher Darvish likes to work with signed with the Cubs?
  6. Maybe. IF we had Walker. IF Pina doesn't regress. IF Braun stays healthy. Are those things more, or less likely to happen? Does this help with the context? My comment was in response to the proposed lineup above being a really good offense, which it is. Having said that, Braun won't always be there, it is likely Pina regresses and Walker is not part of this team. So yeah, those are legitimate questions when calling this a darn good offense. Otherwise, I have no idea what your trying to point out. I didn't say anything about how many games better or worse the team would be. However, you failed to factor in the loss of Nelson into your calculus. They have improved the offense but the pitching surely isn't better off.
  7. Maybe. IF we had Walker. IF Pina doesn't regress. IF Braun stays healthy. Are those things more, or less likely to happen? I took the bold line from the above post and quoted it in to the next post to respond. Braun wasn't healthy last year and the team won 86 games. If he stays Healthier than last year it only makes the team better. I mean he started 99 games last season. So what is your "Stays healthy" Games started referring to? 60 games? 75 games? returning to the 135/140/135 games played in the previous 3 seasons? Because at this time with current OF/1b logjam people are suggesting Braun essentially get 120 games started and that being more than enough out of him. Teams have bad players. Pina regressing isn't an alarming fear that will torpedo this team in to non playoff capability. Villar torpedoed last year, Braun wasn't healthy, Broxton was less exciting, the tail end of RPs torpedoed this team for half a season. Now some of that loss causing has been addressed either internally or FA signs. Somewhere it was listed we're a 77win team now. Wasn't it like 67/68 last year? As just an example. Pina regressing isn't costing the team 10+ games unless he literally has passed balls every time a runner is on 3rd and allows to score. You completely missed the context of my comment.
  8. I don't think Thornburg would unless it was as a second or third piece. I'd guess the starting pitchers would be interesting but I'm not sure Boston would be interested in moving those guys now. I agree that Thornburg wouldn't be a primary target, but as extra piece he might help out getting something put together. Let's put a pin in that idea (Boston).. As I head to bowling league tonight I will be catching up on a few baseball podcasts. Perhaps some creative juices will get flowing.. Find that third team, that would be the key.
  9. And no one is saying Braun is moving to first as a full time permanent thing. People are talking about this like that is the deal but all the Brewers have said is that they want to try and use him there occasionally.
  10. If Nelson were a sure thing I'd agree but he isn't. I just don't think that is enough pitching. Having said that, I think that is what we get and you will have every opportunity to rub my nose in it if I'm wrong. Yea good point with Jimmy... We'll see what happens I guess. If we keep Santana and move Braun to 1st, I'm confident rolling with our stacked offense and rotation full of #2's and #3's. I would feel even better about our offense if we sign Walker... Cain Yelich Braun Shaw Santana Walker Pina Arcia I mean come on, that's a damn good offense! Maybe. IF we had Walker. IF Pina doesn't regress. IF Braun stays healthy. Are those things more, or less likely to happen?

  12. I wouldn't take my word for it about the Cleveland players. Someone will correct if I'm wrong there. If the assumption is that they are, in fact, looking for a serviceable catcher, my guess is that they would be trying to replace Vogt. I am not of the opinion that they are, in fact, searching for a serviceable catcher...........yet.

  14. I'm not opposed to a Santana for prospects deal at all. However, the pitching thing has to be taken care of and I'm still of the opinion that Santana is part of that solution. I agree 100%. But, couldn't we go out and sign an Alex Cobb, and then use some of the prospects generated from a Santana trade to go out and get a TOR starter (ideally with some controllable years) - either now or at the trade deadline? Maybe Boston's prospects aren't a good fit for a Santana deal though? Yeah, I think I commented somewhere that a deal with Boston would probably have to be a three way deal but you are still using Santana to lure pitching. Maybe with Detroit for Fulmer. I think I read that somewhere. You would want to have all the parties engaged though so you got the right prospects that Detroit wanted. You couldn't just trade Santana to Boston and then hope another team wanted some of those prospects. It would have to be pretty structured but I like your thought process.
  15. Yeah, I don't think we have quite the offense Houston does.

  17. There's really not much in the Red Sox system that excites me. They've gutted it in recent years to make deals for guys like Sale. I think the only way they are going to end up with Santana is if a 3rd team gets involved that can offer higher-end MLB pitching for a collection of younger prospects from both teams. That's it for me. Who would we want? Maybe a three team deal would work with them?
  18. I'm betting this is how it sets up, or something very close to this.
  19. Well, Mejia started in AA last season, and I think he hasn't played in AAA, so they might expect him to start the season in AAA. Pina seems like an upgrade over what Cleveland have on the roster, so in a trade for Salazar and Kipnis (as an example) I could easily see them viewing Pina as a nice, cheap stopgap (and upgrade) for a year and insurance in case Mejia doesn't stick at catcher. I think Pina is a pretty close clone of exactly what Cleveland has at catcher. They don't hit a ton but they are pretty well respected defensively which is pretty much what I expect of Pina moving forward. I may be wrong but I don't think there is any question about whether Mejia can stick at catcher. He is a pretty tremendous all around prospect. Which begs the question, given you think the catching situation is rough in Cleveland, why they would give up on that even if he is a year out?
  20. I agree, and would love to see another starter added via trade. But time is running out if they want to accomplish that before Spring Training starts. And it still leaves them without a surefire #1. Instead, it's a bunch of #3 guys with #2 potential on a good day. But who knows ... maybe they have some sort of analytic that sees Cobb, Anderson, Davies or Chacin as Ace material. I don't think they need an ace. If you can load up on 2/3 types, I think you can compete with that. I'd be fine with Arietta and Cobb with Anderson/Davies/Chacin following that. I don't think any of that group would be called an ace.
  21. Yeah, he may have some info that drives that but it's really just one of those prediction articles like the ones that come out when free agency starts. Having said that, I'm not sure I would like that move. I've seen a lot of informed back and forth as to his value/quality but I'm not sold either way yet. Cobb strikes me as one of those "better stuff than results" types. I guess it would depend on what the contract is. Stuff-wise I'd say he's better than Chase Anderson, so it would be a matter of whether a move from the AL to the NL will help his numbers significantly, and if Derek Johnson can coax better results similar to what he's done with Nelson and Anderson. Cobb wouldn't be the flashiest signing, but it also wouldn't surprise me to see him be the most productive of the "Big 4" two seasons from now. That seems like reasonable take. My answer, then, would be that I'd be fine with that if they added another starter besides him. He alone is not the answer in my opinion.
  22. Domingo is going to Maryvale, that is my prediction. Seriously though, Cleveland has always made sense whether they move Encarnacion or not but yeah, that deal might make it more obvious.

  24. Have we really heard anything about them not being happy with Pina? I feel the opposite is probably true. He could drop off a bit offensively and still be an important part of the club. Oh I agree, but if another team says "we'll give you the starting pitcher you want in exchange for [insert list of players]", and Pina is one of those players in the package that they want, do you say no? Probably not... Nope, you are absolutely correct. I was just trying to consider how valuable Pina really is to the teams we have been connected to. He may have more value to the Brewers than anyone else we would theoretically be engaged with.
