  1. The idea is to take back existing contracts, of guys that can fit right in and help them to the next level. To a team looking to move players to make a run at a FA, Redd's expiring deal will be tempting.
  2. It's very tough to get fair value for Prince without a team giving up a member of their rotation, which no contender is likely to do. This is exactly why Doug says it's tough to move a position player during the season.
  3. There are exceptions to every rule, but only rarely do 2B in the low minors have the ability to play SS. I've assumed Farris can't play SS, and until he does, will just figure he does not have the range and/or arm.
  4. The pitchers hitting so well has a lot to do with it, but so does Escobar and Gomez's speed. Few teams have good bats in the 7-9 spots, but not only that, many have slow-footed catchers cluttering up the bases, unable to score from 2B on a single and 1B on a double.
  5. I assume he will be a FA.
  6. Does it count toward your 15 if they play in Europe? I recall the Mavs having 16 or 17 and Cuban saying he was keeping all of them. I assumed it was the D League.
  7. Some teams have gone with 16 and had someone play in the D League. Tiny and Hobson would be fine candidates.
  8. I predicted Dooling on the old Bucks thread. Diener or Ivey for the #3 PG spot? I doubt if they'll just go with Hobson, as if BJ got hurt, Dooling/Hobson would struggle to fill 48 minutes.
  9. You're not going to get much for Edmonds, a middling prospect at most. No rush to do or not do a deal there.
  10. Beckham would play 3B while McGehee moved to 1B, in the short-term. Long-term, one would assume Weeks would be replaced by Beckham or Lawrie, but no one knows where Brett will end up.
  11. It seems obvious to me Doug and Gord feel Corey is not as good as his present production, and most of us, and most other teams feel the same way. Hart, whether he meant it or not, told them he'd like a long-term offer before being traded, and the response was to continue to shop him. He's a solid corner OF, and is having a very good, even outstanding season. However, the braintrust knows you pay guys based on projected future performance, not what he's done in the past. He's going to get far more than his projection for '11, and likely beyond that as well, as he is athletic and hits for average and power. In this case, selling high, either now or in the offseason, just makes perfect sense. He also hits 100 OPS points higher at home this year, and 50 higher in his career. MP, while being a fair park, allows more HR's than normal. Take away a few cheapies a season, and that makes him very average if his home park is not MP.
  12. Parra is an incredible underachiever, and probably the 5th best SP currently in the rotation. He still hasn't gone more than 6 innings, despite better stuff than anyone except Yo. That "sit down" talk has merit, though unlikely if Bush is dealt.
  13. What I meant is, if Scooter had been taken where his talent placed him, not his signability, say in the 4th round, he'd be ranked far higher. It's my opinion age is frequently overlooked in the P50, and for him to be doing what he is as a 20 year-old, just drafted last June, in Appleton, is worthy of a far higher ranking.
  14. ANA has very few prospects to deal. Everyone asks for uber-prospect Mike Trout, and he's probably untouchable.
  15. From what we've seen, it's easy to say Doug asks for what he wants, and no one has bit yet.
  16. They could use Hart, but you sure don't see much need for Prince in ATL. Glaus fine now, Freeman soon.
  17. Scooter is top ten minimum, maybe top 5. He's a middle INF with pop, 20, in his first year of pro ball. If he would not been considered a tough sign, he'd have been a top pick and be far, far higher.
  18. Bush is not going to get you more than a Rivas type, a lower level prospect who could see the bigs, but does not have a high ceiling. Maybe 2 of those guys if they're in A ball. As CV has proven though, some of them make it.
  19. They have went from 8 relievers to 6, and I'd say Cain is close to being sent down now for a pitcher...if one SP gets knocked out early, he's gone. Regardless, he's gone when Yo is activated, unless they give up on Cappy.
  20. Open Pit is great for marinades and such.
  21. To me, worrying about deet side effects would be the same as bypassing vaccines due to Jenny McCarthy having autism fears about them. As gorgeous as she is, I'll go with the thousands of very intelligent people who have studied this and think she's a raving loon. 50 cases in 50 years is likely to occur with any product. Considering that lyme disease also has nasty repercussions, I'll take my chances and bathe in Off like I have for years.
  22. Hall could have been a utility guy here as well, they were paying him. I'd say it's 95% likely he was released for clubhouse/off the field issues. We know he had to be picked up by Yost after an altercation in early '07 or '08, we know he was mentioned in the ESPN mag article as a guy who partied heavily. Braun could probably get away with that, but guys with a 700 OPS can't. He was replaced by Jason B, right? No offense to JB, who hits better than I do and runs fast, but at best, he's a stopgap. It didn't seem like a baseball decision then, and it still doesn't.
  23. Cain is barely younger than Gomez, and would be way below average in a corner OF spot, even if he was a plus defender. Cain is a bit of an unknown, since he missed all of last year, but even the most optimistic Cain supporter would have him struggle in RF in '11.
  24. Bush was so bad last year after his injury, it'd be almost impossible for him to even be a Type B FA. I've suggested pairing Bush up with a bat for a young SP who is about equal this year, but has a far higher ceiling. Think how good he'd be pitching half his games in LA or SD, where HR's go to die.
  25. I think it's obvious that Doug prefers Moore because the scouts love him and his ceiling more than Davis. Needless to say, while I'm sure Doug is familiar with Jake O, he does not have him on a timetable, nor is he counting the days to his arrival. As Jeffress shows, pitching prospects have many problems to defeat before the bigs. One thing to keep in mind is how much better is Prince and Rickie than relatively inexpensive stopgaps, like say Overbay to play 1B or Inglett to play RF. Obviously, you're going to have a dropoff, though using career numbers, Corey and Joe is only about 10 runs a year (Lyle and Prince is 38, if you give Lyle 5 runs for defense, it's still 33). So, can you use the $20M you were going to pay Corey and Prince, and what you get for them, to replace those 4-5 wins? It's not like they'll go from 775 runs to 600 if they lose those two guys, but they'll go from 2nd to 7th, or something like that. They just have to improve the other areas to offset, or limit the falloff.
