  1. They might drop the fee if you call and ask.
  2. Protection is overrated, if not a complete myth. Pujols' numbers have stayed steady over the years, and he's often had no one behind him.
  3. I'd take Lawrie over Farris anytime. Farris' has barely played over A ball, and is Gomez's age.
  4. Doug said it nicely today, that no team wants to give up anyone on their major league roster, instead they offer a couple A ball guys. For instance, the Sox can't trade Danks, or they'd have to trade for another SP. Ditto for SF.
  5. Some nice role players in that proposal, but all are being paid as starters.
  6. Macha has done a fine job with Loe. Pretty much the dictionary definition of setting him up for success. He has used Braddock and CV (even Cappy) nicely to protect Loe from big LH bats.
  7. Here in Wausau, Ned Yost IV was easily the best player I've seen...he was a man among boys, big, muscular, every throw to 2B between innings was perfect. However, the fans here always have a favorite, and he's usually some 5-7, 150 pound 2B. He's in no way a prospect, but he's spunky. It also goes to the difference between the big leagues and such. I thought Yost would easily hit AA or AAA, and he stalled out in the low minors. The major leaguers, even the worst ones, are very good at every phase of the game. Weeks was a poor defender when he made the majors, but his range and arm alone would make him the best in lower levels. Another example, Lucroy is still learning how to block balls in the dirt. However, put Lucroy at lower levels, he might be the best at blocking balls in the dirt. He stands out because he's not yet at major league level...but he's being compared to Jason Kendall and Henry Blanco now.
  8. I've had Gamel penciled in at 1B or RF for a year. Ever since Doug said some people in the organization said Mat could be the RF this year especially. With Weeks, everyone knew he had the skills to be a 2B, but needed reps. Almost everyone who has worked with him (Macha, Randolph, Money) hints that he needs to work harder, and I seem to recall Cameron talking to him about his work habits and/or arrival times in '09. He reminds me of Adam Dunn with athleticism. It says a lot about Gamel that he's succeeded at every level, probably mostly on pure ability. His struggles to put together an entire season makes you wonder what he could be if he put his mind to it.
  9. I used to root for the Flames when Bob Johnson was their coach, and for the Rangers when Richter was their goalie. If forced to choose today, I'd probably either go with TB, which is where Erin Andrews got her start, or a Canadian team, like Edmonton or Ottawa, based on their market and currency disadvantage which makes them a perennial underdog.
  10. Above average players make about $7M a year as FA's. Suffice it to say, McGehee is plenty solid, and will be very wealthy if he can produce the next few years.
  11. That's what relievers do, pitch when their situation arises. Axford has been worked when needed, as has Loe. If you decide you have to baby your relievers and have a day or two off between outings, you need a dozen relievers. When you figure out how to do that with a 25 man roster, let us know.
  12. HS power always takes a long time to develop, maybe with ARod and Griffey Jr. as the exceptions.
  13. Solid player, under team control through 2014, cheap until 2013 begins. Not sure what's meant by "long-term," but he's not going anywhere until after '12, I would assume.
  14. Braddock has missed the last couple games and tonight due to an undisclosed injury. He's very unlikely to ever be anything but a reliever.
  15. You'd certainly want to lead off from 1B or 2B in the above situation in case of a force out at the base you were running to.
  16. No idea, but it seems unlikely they would settle for one player who is in low A ball (or is Carolina high A?).
  17. How many teams need 2 position players and have a half-dozen young players to deal? Not likely.
  18. He's as good as Howard and younger, so I'd say 5/126 or 6/151.
  19. I also love McD's BBQ sauce. Arby's is also superb.
  20. I thought just about everyone used Firefox. I guess I wasn't far off.
  21. Bush might be offered a 1-2 year deal as a FA. Someone will probably offer him a Marquis like deal, 3y/$17M, and he'll be gone. You can possibly get a kid with velocity or a position player with skills for him, but more than likely, a couple guys in A ball that have "potential" comes to mind. That is how the Crew got CV, so they do pan out sometimes. I don't know what the Brewers gave up for Doc Medich years ago, but not a whole lot, I'm sure. The best you could hope for is a 25 y/o who has struggled but has some ceiling.
  22. Beckham is very unlikely to be available during the season, as is any regular contributor on a contender.
  23. Allow me to say I have no problem picking up Sanchez, a lefty who wasn't bad when he was raw, and is still improving. Bumgarner is not going anywhere, unless Lawrie is included. Adding a solid #2/3 SP for a guy many felt should have been non-tendered (and now feel is worth an untouchable like Bumgarner) seems like a fine return to me. If you were forced to name 10 pitchers under 27 who could breakout, Sanchez would all but certainly be one of them (depending on your definition of "breakout", Yo might be too).
  24. Braddock is 23 and has not thrown many innings since TJ surgery. The odds of him getting through 175 innings healthy for 3-4 years is tiny. It's small enough for any 23 y/o.
  25. Manny is a LHP who throws 92-94 and has a plus breaking ball. He'll have to fail a dozen times before he stops getting chances. Cappy is a FA after this season, correct? Can't get too excited about him. Nice to see him return healthy.
