  1. I was over at Gateway Redbirds, and learned that the Cardinals signed Matt Carpenter. I had not heard that. The natives are not pleased. They get him for the minimum and the Padres are paying the rest, but man, not a "needle mover." Unrelated: Are we sure that Keston Hiura and Heston Kjerstad are not evil twins?
  2. Surprised that I hadn't seen anyone mention this: https://www.mlb.com/news/mariners-twins-trade-for-jorge-polanco?partnerId=zh-20240130-1153394-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20240130-1153394-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=ZCMQrVoa62%2FDUpRoB6J1mOE3Se+I2l44Z3T5YLLI5s9VYyPGjvffgtUT9VTiwXDB&bt_ts=1706621962752 Polanco for four players plus cash. I anxiously await someone to tell me what it means. I know some on here had mentioned Polanco. Is it an overpay?
  3. I think I can guess the answer to this. Given mlb’s unwillingness to improve the living conditions of minor leaguers until they were forced to, I’m guessing the Brewers are similar to other orgs in how they treat their office and scouting staff.
  4. I think the thing I don't understand is that LaFleur isn't going to hire Leonhard because he is from Wisconsin, so this is really a non-issue. We aren't taking fan voting for the next Packer DC. Patrick said it himself. "If LaFleur thought he was the best candidate, I wouldn't be upset." Well, why else would he hire him? I can want Jim Leonhard to be DC (and I do) and it definitely has something to do with watching his defenses get after it. It also has something to do with what a good guy Leonhard seems to be. I might be wrong. I often am. If he's bad, he will be fired. If he's successful, he's a Wisconsin guy, and it's not like the home state guy would stab us in the back by trying to reset the market for DC salary and take the Bears job. Ugh, that was too soon, even for me.
  5. More like Texas A&M, Nebraska, and other places paying off football coaches.
  6. Really appreciate the info and discussion.
  7. Talk to me about Ashby. He’s my pitching version of Garrett Mitchell in that many posters are higher on him than I am. And this was before Ashby’s injury. Who’s a comp for him, if healthy? Is he a 2? A3?
  8. We have a thread on offense, so I want to hear the BF Brain's thoughts about the rotation. I remember last year there was discussion about having 8 starters to choose from, and then injuries took care of that. Since Burnes is still on the team, he anchors the rotation with Peralta, Miley, Rea, and then...Joe Ross? Ethan Small? Jacob Misiorowski? Robert Gasser? Last year, in my memory, at this time we had Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Miley, Houser, Lauer, Ashby, with maybe some talk of Bryse Wilson. Ended up needing 33 starts from Rea and Teheran. I was looking for some information on Aaron Ashby and cannot find anything substantive. There is this quote from Matt Arnold: “He really feels good. He’s coming back, throwing, playing catch, working out,” Arnold said. “I think he’s on track to be a part of our rotation, hopefully next year. That’s the expectation. This guy is working his tail off to try to come back and he’s definitely on the right track." Does that mean he expects Ashby to be game-ready from the start of next year, or just sometime next year? “It’s hard to say,” Arnold said. “You want to be cautious with these types of things. When he’s ready, he’s certainly going to be part of our mix, for sure.” To me, that doesn't sound good. Is anyone here thinking he will pitch this year? Is it another Woodruff situation? I look forward to the discussion.
  9. From Wikipedia: A common generic name for medieval war horses was charger, which was interchangeable with the other terms). In Spain, the jennet was used as a light cavalry horse. Stallions were often used as war horses in Europe due to their natural aggression and hot-blooded tendencies. Connect the dots, people!
  10. Craig Counsell's ears just perked up.
  11. You mentioned it, but what if Hoskins wouldn't have taken a two-year deal? Don't you think he is banking on having a good year and then getting his payday? If he thinks he is a good "prove it" year from a 4/80 contract, then he is going to want the one year opt out. The Brewers' decision at that point is to take the one year or leave it. He might have no interest in a rebuild. Maybe he wants to mash with the Brewers this year, but have the option to not hang around if they let Burnes, Adames, and Williams go. None of us know. If you believe in the front office, then they will figure it out. So many moving parts. Would the Brewers have done this if Woodruff was healthy, and they had his salary on the books? For the 2024 season, the Brewers are a better team today than they were two days ago, and that's good.
  12. Here is why this upsets me. This signing needed to happen one day earlier. Yesterday, Immaculate Grid had a square for "Boston-Played one game at 3rd base". I could probably have gotten a better rarity score using this name.
  13. And if Hoskins has a poor first year, that doesn’t mean the second year will be poor. Hope!
  14. This is cool. I was firmly in the “not gonna happen” camp. I thought someone would give him more years or money. Glad to be wrong.
  15. Please, no. I believe I am as optimistic as anyone who posts here. Signing Votto would put a "home-run-ball-into-the-Toyota-Tundra" sized-dent in my optimism.
  16. Good prediction. However, I preferred the approach the Packers took. Don't reduce the possessions, just score on 6 of the first 7.
  17. Thanks for the responses, I got a good laugh. Fortunately the wedding is in the Caribbean and everything will be over by the time the game starts, local time, so my initial post was fully tongue-in-cheek. At my mom's funeral, a guy wore a Packer jacket and Packer Zubaz. The funeral was at 9 in the morning. On a Wednesday. In March.
  18. Sorry to derail the Packer thread with a personal problem, but I have to have "the talk" with my son this week. He's getting married on Saturday and I don't know how to tell him I won't be there.
  19. Can anyone smarter than me talk about the Hicks contract? Starter? $44 million? For a guy who has started 8 games in his career? I don't get it. I guess because all I saw at STL was a max velocity guy, I never thought of him as a starter.
  20. Houston lost to Iowa State on Tuesday. No more undefeateds. 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, and 11 lost this week when you add in Tennesee, Oklahoma and Marquette.
  21. Yesterday was bad. Today is fine. I'm in Madison.
  22. I'm going to the Caribbean for a week. If a trade happens while I am gone, could you post something hysterical on my behalf? Start with how much I hate the trade. Make sure the phrases "dumpster-diving", "tanking", and "trash" are included, and go ahead and pick a new team for me to root for. Don't forget to include my signature.
  23. Packers are playing the game, they might as well win it. Sad Jerry is the best Jerry. Dak Prescott is 2-4 in the playoffs and has only beaten Tampa, who had a 45 yo QB, and a Seattle team that had a QB benched in favor of Jarrett Stidham this year. So, nobody. I am glad they are not playing at Detroit, because they will probably have the Wolverines at the game, and talk about how they overcame getting caught cheating adversity, and I don't need to see that.
  24. It certainly makes sense, coming off of an injury, that he would like to do that. Have the player options, or the mutual options, become more common the last few years, or did I just miss hearing about it in the past? That seems like what a player would want on a "prove it" deal.
