    Trading Smoltz, a 22nd-round draft choice who at the time was a AA pitcher with a 5-10 record, for Alexander, who went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA down the stretch for the Tigers after they traded for him? People focus on Smoltz' career, but imagine if the Brewers got a guy who went 9-0 down the stretch and in the playoffs. They would be celebrating Arnold's genius. And, the Tigers only won the division on the second-to-last day of the season, making Alexander's presence even more crucial in a time when only the division winner made the playoffs. I'd take that trade for the Brewers. Isn't that exactly what we are hoping for when we talk about trading for Skubal, Ryan, Detmers, etc? Just because Smoltz had an extreme outlier of a career doesn't make it a bad trade. Bravo to the Braves for identifying Smoltz as an arm they could develop.

    It seems as if you are rating/valuing the Brewer prospects on a different scale than prospects from other teams. I don't think front offices do that. I imagine they are not struggling to comp or value Braylon Payne. The teams may not agree on what that value is, but determining a player's value is what has happened in every single trade in MLB history. Then, if you are essentially saying that the Dodgers are the "so many teams" that can offer more, no argument from me. Your use of the qualifier "so many" may be what is throwing me off here. Doesn't matter. I don't expect the Brewers to end up with Skubal. But it will be because the Tigers want more than the Brewers want to give (Or the $10 mil in salary). Not that other teams have more to give.

    I don’t understand how “so many teams can offer more for him?” Can you explain that? Who has more to trade than Milwaukee?

    Made a last-minute decision to drive from Madison to see the game last night. After the walk-off on Sunday, I just wanted to keep the feeling going. Happy I did it. Love watching Miz pitch, and it kept me away from the IGT.

    If your starters are only going five, you better have multiple inning guys. It seems like the evolution of the pen, nothing more. You had the old-style long relief guys because it was unusual for the starters to have a short outing. The long relief guy was there to wear one when the team had a short start due to ineffectiveness or injury. Now, it's essential.

    Fun game. Weather couldn’t have been more perfect. Good crowd, into the game despite the Brewers a pretty pulseless team…until they weren’t. Esteury Ruiz and Wild Bill, involved in that three-team trade, both hitting HRs. and I caught a ball, had ice cream, good seats. The win made it great

    And let me add, that just because they can, doesn't mean they should. I hate the idea of the Olympics shutting down the sport. Like the all-star game, I would be fine if no Brewers were chosen for the Olympics, and the players from MKE can simply rest for a week.

    This kind of discussion always reminds of the Doyle Alexander-John Smoltz trade (and the Sabathia trade for MKE, of course). Haha, Tigers, you gave up a hall of famer for a 35-year-old pitcher. But, Alexander went 9-0 down the stretch in 1987 and got them into the playoffs, where they lost to the Twins. They held off Toronto by two games, and Alexander got the win against Toronto in the first game of the final series, where Detroit caught the Jays. Was that a bad trade for the Tigers? I'm sure it felt pretty good during that season. At some point, you have to give the front office some grace, and not re-litigate every trade 10 years down the road. I think all of the WAR computation for the various trades can get silly. Do you want an 8-WAR player this season, or a guy who gives you one WAR for 9 years so you can say you won the trade?
