  1. After getting by Paddack, they have to make their move on the Cubs and Cards with the final two games of the Padres series. They’re not going to be able to gain on both the Cubs and cardinals this weekend
  2. And he's gotten better the more they've used him. He's transformed himself into a legit weapon out of the pen. Bravo to the Brewers front office and pro scouting staff for recognizing that a guy with good stuff but was struggling in a starting role could successfully convert himself into a shutdown reliever. The big question is: Can they re-sign him this offseason? His performance with Milwaukee will certainly make him some money. From back end starter on a one year deal, to a late inning power lefty
  3. This is my guess as well. If by some miracle, the evidence falls apart and he escapes serious criminal charges...that won't be enough. I think teams would opt to not sign this guy, can't imagine an agent needing the money that bad to want to represent him. It would take some sort of massive retraction from the police department saying they had it all wrong(which won't happen), for him to have any chance to pitch again. 100% correct. The guy is now a pariah. If convicted on the charges, he won't ever play again. However, witness cooperation, evidence chain of custody etc. make obtaining a conviction against someone who essentially is a 1%er with the best defense money can buy not such a certainty. If he beats the rap I wouldn't be so sure he's a 'pariah'. See: Aroldis Chapman, Addison Russell, Roberto Osuna.
  4. While a lengthy suspension would be in the works; child pornography, if true, means prison then deportation. What a nightmare season for the Pirates organization. Totally obscuring impressive seasons from a couple rookies in Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds.
  5. Castillo's spot in the Reds rotation was last night, and they started Kevin Gausman instead. It would suck if the Reds skipped Castillo's start against the Cubs, only to start him against the Brewers. It looks like their manager added a sixth starter, so Castillo is now scheduled to throw against the Mets on the 20th and with the six man rotation will miss the Brewers. DeScalfani is scheduled for the 21st and Bauer is scheduled for the 22nd both will miss the Brewers. So it looks like they'll face, some permutation of Gray, Mahle, and Gausman... way better.
  6. Assuming everybody pitches on regular rest, the Brewers will face: Gray, Castillo and DeScalfani in the Reds series. Those are real tough pitching match ups, while the Cardinals will be facing Arizona and the Cubs will be facing Pittsburgh.
  7. Similar to Chase Anderson, he gives up a lot of homeruns (with the majority 15 out of 22 occurring on the road this season). However, he doesn't walk many batters which allows him to stick around in games. Should be interesting.
  8. Since July 1st Padres are 27-40, the Brewers need this series, they’ll likely get Castillo, Gray and Bauer later with Cincy; more tough pitching matchups
  9. Rizzo in walking boot for the next 5-7 days.
  10. It is sort of interesting that everyone knows the Pirates melted down after June going 26-42. What is interesting is the Padres have gone 26-40 over the same time period, an equally monumental collapse. I guess you need a couple of teammate fights to really shed light on an implosion
  11. I am not an expert...but I am going to go out on a limb and say that ankle sprain will be more than a few games easily. If I was the Cubs (or their fans) coming back in the regular season would be a total miracle. It wasn't pretty and he looked rough getting off the field. Ankle sprains usually end up as DL trips. yeah, The Rockies' David Dahl has been out since like Aug 3 and will miss the rest of the season with a high ankle sprain. Rizzo could easily be out until Nov. No Baez, likely No Rizzo. Bryant with the aid of a cortisone injection has been playing through an ailing heel and knee. No timetable on Kimbrel's return from elbow inflammation. The injury bug is really working over the Cubs late in the year.
  12. This is the match up you want. A red hot team squaring off against a pitcher facing MLB hitters for the first time in over a year following a major elbow injury. The next ones will be tough. Paddack is a really good starting pitcher and Lucchesi's best start of the year was against the Brewers in San Diego. Lamet hasn't been a slouch either.
  13. Also impacting the playoff race; Anthony Rizzo left yesterday's game with an ankle sprain. X-rays were negative but having an MRI today. While the Brewers don't have Yelich for the last 16 games, the Cubs don't have Baez either and now will be without Rizzo for at least a few games too.
  14. Epstein is kind of a boob right? Imagine if Counsell took the Brewers to the play offs four straight years, won a title and had the team in the hunt for the playoffs for a 5th straight year. You’d never can him. Yet, Epstein sounds like he’s ready to pink slip Maddon for their play the last two years when, but for a few players, it’s all the same players that won the World Series in 2016. Strange stuff indeed
  15. Wild card race is wide open. Brewers one game out of first wild card position
  16. Very quietly Chacin has yet to give up a run with the Red Sox across multiple appearances with a whip of 0.88
  17. Melvin left a team that was likely a 100 loss team with a below average farm system. What Stearns did over the past 3 years is a miracle. We should be going on our 3rd straight year of 90+losses at this point instead of almost going to a world series and being in the hunt for a playoff. We should be the 2019 Orioles but we are competing for a playoff because of the GM. This is one of those head scratchers for me. With a bad GM this team is one of the worst in baseball over the past 3 years and still has a bad farm system. There is no objective method that suggest Stearns has done a bad job, it makes no sense at all. When he took over most of us thought the team was going into a 6 or 7 year rebuild and he did it in 2 years. I’m not so sure Melvin left the cupboards as bare as initially thought: Suter, Woodruff, Grisham were Melvin draft picks. Hader and Houser were minor leaguers acquires by Melvin. Plus Devin Williams saw time at the majors year.
  18. Nice try. No reading between the lines was necessary with my post. Anyone that’s watched this bullpen pitch since September 1, that says anything other than, at worst, it’s a good bullpen, doesn’t know what their talking about. My post pointed that out. That’s all. And (IF) it gets more and more dominant moving forward then what? Maybe the inconsistent word can go away, and we can see this pen for what it is > one of the best if not THE BEST in the NL. Come on! The best bullpen in the NL is in St. Louis. They've got two relievers each with over 60 innings pitched with a FIP of 2.90 or less. They have six arms in the bullpen with more than 40 innings pitched with a WHIP of 1.2 or less. Besides John Gant, every reliever in the Cardinal pen has at least a 2:1 Strike out to walk ratio. The Brewers pen is markedly improved since July by a few simple facts. Junior Guerra was dominant in August and has been very good in the 2nd half. The last four weeks Hader has regained his form as a dominant reliever (0.649 WHIP and 7.67:1 SO:W ratio). Since coming back from the minors on July 14th Jay Jackson has been solid. Finally Pomeranz, Black and Suter replace the revolving door of Alex Wilson, Jacob Barnes, Aaron Wilkerson, Burch Smith, Taylor Williams etc. I give the GM credit for remaking his pen on the fly into a very good unit, but the Cardinals still have the superior pen.
  19. It would be great if they could knock Wainwright out early and make the Cardinals use up the killers in their bullpen early.
  20. The Brewers are not in control of who they play. All they can control is whether they play well against the teams on their schedule. It it isn't like this team hasn't looked like crap against the Marlins this season. In control of their own destiny simply means they do not need teams ahead of them to lose games in order to qualify for the playoffs. As for the eulogy, keep in mind, the Brewers on September 12th are four games out of first, they were four games out of first place on August 4th. The only significant change over the last five weeks is that the Cubs have taken on water while the Brewers have kept pace and gotten themselves back in the discussion. I wouldn't mind being wrong and taking the internet grief that goes along with it. Time will tell.
  21. I wouldn’t say the dynasty is dead because if they get in it will be the 5th straight year they’ve qualified for the post season. However, we can say the success cycle is hard. There are fewer Kris Bryant’s and Javier Baez’s available when your picking 25th overall. A common failure to draft and develop starting pitching leaves them with a 100 million dollar rotation that has been up and down all year long
  22. Yep, may have been premature because they once again control their own destiny in making the playoffs. Then again, it might be the last gasp because they’ve been playing the Marlins. Time will tell if they can keep it up.
  23. The Cubs being where they are at is why the noose is tightened around Maddon’s neck. Baez, Bryant and Contreras being banged up all year has really made an impact, and the 35 year old starting pitchers Lester and Hamels are running out of gas. Hamels era is over 7 this last month, Lester’s Is close to 5
  24. Cardinals second loss to Rockies and Brewers now have a realistic shot at division title since Cubs and Cards have six more games together
  25. He probably falls into that 2-3 year deal for 6-8 million per year bucket doesn't he? Sample is small, but just look at the stuff. He's definitely worked his way into pitching the very back end of games for this team. You could easily argue he's our 2nd best reliever. I think that's too high. Justin Wilson got 2 years $10mm. I think that's the absolute top end of what Pomeranz would get. I'm thinking he's more likely in the 1 year $4mm range. As another poster mentioned, if a team gives him a chance to start that may sway him. If you read the JS article on Pomeranz he said he’s been traded 5 times in his career and would like to stay in one place for a few years. Money talks but based on those comments he’s probably looking for a multi year deal to pitch in any role, more than a one year deal to start. A team can never have too many left handlers who throw hard either
