  1. Ashby didn't do himself a bunch of favors, but the shoddy defense in the 1st is looming pretty large right now too.
  2. This has all the makings of one of those crazy 13-12 games. Just hope the Brewers have the bigger crooked number at the end.
  3. See, I get this argument. You are basically saying that the Brewers should be playing matchups better. That is a solid, logical argument. One that's difficult to disagree with given the circumstances. Thats what all of us who wanted to start Burnes are saying. I think most if not all of us are ok with the 6 man rotation but were in favor of Burnes starting today because of the opponent. Not really. It sounds as if some posters, including yourself, wanted the plan changed to move Burnes up to start today. adambr2 is arguing that Burnes starting today should have been the plan all along. Those are two very different scenarios, especially when you are talking about MLB starting pitchers who are very set in their ways and routines. They typically don't adjust well to change without a lot of warning.

  5. In the Brewers' defense, the Cubs are pretty much marching out a AAAA lineup with a few stalwarts sprinkled in. Pirates might actually be better offensively right now as long as the Cubs are down Rizzo and Bryant.
  6. Lindblom would have probably been a better option on paper. That if they had gone that route, it would have been panned here. Hard.
  7. Does a win against the Cubs in June really mean that much more than one against the Pirates, though? Perhaps to us fans as a rivalry game it does, but in the scheme of the final season standings, I don't know if it is a huge thing. I didn't see the decision to start Ashby today as a give-away to the Cubs. He's a legit MLB-caliber arm. Pretty obvious that he isn't ready yet based on today's results, but it isn't like the Brewers went into the game today with the predetermined decision to hand it to the Cubs. They obviously hoped their top pitching prospect would be good enough to make it through a couple innings. It didn't happen. That's baseball. Yes each of these games is twice as important as long as you believe they are our biggest threat in the division. No doubt winning 2 of 3 is great but we had a chance to really demoralize our rival and chose not to give the team the best chance of doing just that. See, you are viewing giving Ashby a start as a predetermined loss. I'm not. Not sure I'm going to be able to understand your viewpoint, and you obviously are ignoring mine. Agree to disagree I suppose.
  8. To be fair, it's not exactly unheard of for a guy to get moved up a day. There are variables, though. For a game in June, coming off a 60-game season, I'm not sure you want to change up the plan.

  10. This is really reaching. The decision to put off Burnes until the Pirate game on Thursday was made before this series even started. The idea that they knew last week that Burnes had something going on that would make him unavailable on Wednesday but good to go by Thursday is a pretty enormous stretch. Burnes could have started today. These are contradictory statements. Yeah, it would have been Burnes on 5 days rest. But if the decision was already made, it was already made. He was never gonna start today.
  11. Had they known that Ashby would be as inconsistent as he's looked, I imagine they wouldn't have made the decision they did. This is kind of the ultimate "benefit of hindsight" strawman argument. Is it really surprising that Ashby would be nervous in his debut against a rival. I just hope they haven't damaged his confidence too much. If his confidence is damaged by one rough outing, I'm not sure he's long for MLB. No MLB pitcher is immune to rough appearances. Certainly not ideal to do this in your first appearance, but nothing that can't be overcome either.

  13. It does. Although Ashby exceeds Bettinger's absolute ceiling of a #5/swingman/AAAA starter.
  14. He's said repeatedly that he prefers the role he has now compared to his previous role you described. He's also at the point in his career where you want to make him happy and comfortable.
  15. I'm just not sure I'm buying Hiura's current performance as a definite indicator of future results, and I am equally skeptical of his 1B defense. Plus, you've got inevitable injuries that will make Urias have to cover time at 2B, etc. Any acquisition that takes ABs away from the Robertson/Pederson's of the world, the better the team will be. As much as I have wanted Jace Peterson to just go away, he's actually proven to be pretty valuable this season. I'm at the point where I don't mind him much in a utility role. Problem is he's still starting somewhere pretty much every day. Hopefully Wong and Cain are back soon, and he's pushed to the role he should be in.
  16. Gallo has nearly 750 career innings at 1B, and from the looks of things has been fine defensively there. Hasn't played there so much the last few seasons with Ronald Guzman and Lowe around, but I imagine he'd probably be fine there if needed. He also has 725 innings at 3B in his career as well, but hasn't been as good there defensively.
  17. I love every single part of this post.
  18. Aguilar continues to make all too much sense for the Brewers. Competent defense at first with a thumper-type bat that they seem to need this year. Shouldn't we try to determine if this Hiura resurgence is real first, though?
  19. Who was the poster who absolutely loved Troy Stokes a few years back? Was that Clancy? Hard to believe that Stokes is still only 25 years old. Seems like he's been kicking around the upper minors forever.
  20. Hummel probably doesn't have the arm to play RF on a consistent basis. If he did, he'd be seeing time there. The Brewers sure as heck aren't going to put their top power threat in Garcia on the bench to play a 26 year old rookie at a spot he's really never played. Hummel's best route to the majors is probably should something happen to Yelich (knock on wood) Wilson I could see up at some point, as he's the type of "jack of all trades" player that Counsell really seems to like. I doubt he has a chops to play SS at the MLB level, though, which is going to limit his opportunities over a guy like Robertson. Andy Ashby is nearly 54 years old, and retired 17 years ago. Aaron Ashby will likely see some big league time if he can keep his command under control, though. QTC - His K/9 numbers are great, but everything else is UGLY. I mean, maybe if he gets hot, but I imagine he's not real high on the totem pole right now. I agree that Lindblom is likely the next starter to get the call (likely this week), and Francis is a tick behind him.
