  1. Reggie was an end. Dotson and Brown were the interior linemen. By today's standards, Reggie White was most definitely an interior lineman. He was not an edge rusher. That would be like saying Aaron Donald is not an interior lineman because he technically plays DE in a 3-4 defense.
  2. MLB players, especially those as accomplished as Justin Turner, don't do this. They know it is a business. If he signs with the Brewers, it means he wants to be a Brewer. If he re-signs with the Dodgers, it means he wants to remain a Dodger. I do truly think it's as simple as that. Justin Turner has earned more than $62 million in his career. If he is willing to go to a different city he doesn't want to be in over a few million dollars, he's done something seriously wrong with his life.
  3. It may be semantics, but I don't think it's necessarily that Turner doesn't want to play for the Brewers, moreso that he doesn't want to leave familiar surroundings in a city where he's treated like a god, and a dream team's probable shot at a World Series repeat.
  4. This seems to happen with a free agent every year, and it is always someone the Brewers are attached to. It does get to be pretty excruciating. Maybe Turner wants to drag this out into spring training to avoid wind sprints?
  5. Good point. Are we better off getting Turner and rolling with our current pitching, or getting Paxton or Odorizzi and letting Urias/Robertson play third? I think a good argument could be made either way. I think they will sign another 3B and starting pitcher regardless. If they get Turner, then we're looking at a guy like Brett Anderson or a reclamation guy on a cheap MLB or minor league deal. If they sign someone like Lamb or Gyorko, that may free up more for the Paxton/Odorizzi/Walker types. I think I'm ok with either of those scenarios. All these free agents still available this close to spring training actually plays well into the Brewers plans IMO
  6. I'd rather re-sign Brett Anderson if they truly feel they need another starter.
  7. I'm ok with this one. Not a Cabrera fan at all, but was running out of reasons for the Brewers not to sign him. Moot point now.
  8. The fact that the Brewers are publicly out there as a suitor actually makes me even less optimistic than I was before (which wasn't much to begin with). The Brewers never operate in the public eye. Every time they sign a player of any magnitude, it almost always comes as a complete surprise. This tweet makes me think that Turner is simply trying to squeeze a few more nickels, or an option year, out of the Dodgers. I'd be extremely surprised if this happens. On the flip side, we heard Brewers were interested in Wong and within the hour we then heard they came to an agreement. Right. The difference here is that the Brewers have actually been tied to Turner for weeks. These reports really aren't saying anything that we didn't know or couldn't be deduced. That makes me believe the Brewers are simply being used as a pawn.

  10. Not if Urias fulfills his potential as a solid MLB hitter. He was a top 25 MLB prospect for a reason, and it wasn't his defense. Sorry, I should have been more clear... Power hitting. I like power! Haha Stearns tried that approach in 2020 with Smoak, Garcia, Narvaez, Morrison and Healy. It backfired. I applaud him for looking at a different route this season. This lineup will still have plenty of power potential with Yelich and Hiura, and assuming Narvaez and Garcia rebound. Plenty of "ifs", but some solid upside too.
  11. What is with all this shuffling from them???? Watch them just DFA Vesia when announcing Turner signing. Can I make the suggestion again that you try to avoid becoming emotionally attached to Turner? While there are still some tea leaves that point the Brewers way, the chance of it happening is probably still very slim. Right now I'm at the point where if they surprise me and sign him, great. Cool! If not ... it was extremely unlikely to happen anyway. Just don't want to see you hurt when the inevitable happens, man.

  13. Yeah I agree, especially if we can sign Turner. Then we should be set. Just roll with Hader at this point and try to win the division. I don't think they would have handed Wong $18 million unless they were making a strong investment in improved run prevention. Having a knock-out bullpen is obviously part of that. Turner would be a strong sign in that department as well as his defense rates out very well there. But if they don't end up signing him, I would suspect it means that Urias would be the primary starter at 3B, and while that infield of Hiura/Wong/Arcia/Urais isn't going to knock you over with offensive upside, is should be outstanding defensively, assuming Hiura takes well to 1B.
  14. What it does do, though, is make it that much more difficult to squeeze anyone else onto their 40-man roster. Kolarek may have been vulnerable to a DFA had they signed Turner, but it is highly doubtful they would try to DFA Neuse after just acquiring him in a deal. Looking at their roster, I'm not real sure who else would be deemed DFA-worthy. They now have 8 infielders on the 40-man if you include Chris Taylor. Is the Dodgers 40 man that good and deep where you have to worry about who you squeeze out to make room for Justin Turner? Yikes. It is certainly getting to that point. They are taking the "stack the deck" approach to team building that their NBA neighbors the Lakers have followed the last several years.

  16. In 1992, Reggie White had 14 sacks and 81 tackles. In 1991 he had 15 sacks and 101 (!!!) tackles. As an interior D-lineman! Reggie's apex was a full nine years ... even more if you could his USFL stats. The guy was incredibly consistent in his domination for a full decade, and even as he aged, he continued to be an absolute beast, right up to his final season in Green Bay as a 37-year-old. He was most definitely still at the apex of his career in 1993.
  17. Contracts aren't guaranteed in football. The Texans will probably have a cap hit, but as far as actual money going to Watt, that ship has sailed.
  18. Was he, I thought they left him unprotected in the most recent Rule 5 draft? Maybe I'm misremembering, but I didn't think he was on their current 40-man roster. I could have sworn I saw him on their 40-man recently, but now that I look again, he isn't included. In any case, I still think this makes it much more obvious that they are moving on from Turner.
  19. That has to be writing on the wall that they are moving on from Turner. Neuse is a RHH 3B that would make sense as a platoon partner with Rios. Cody Thomas was on their 40-man as well, so this does free up a spot.
  20. Shaw's left-handed stick, along with his ability to fill in well defensively at both 3B and 1B (along with 2B in a pinch), would seemingly fit very well with the current makeup of the roster.
  21. Peppers is probably a really good comparison. In the end, he was a really nice signing for Green Bay. Agreed. Peppers is a terrific comparison. It is important to note, too, that Peppers signed a 3-year deal with the Packers that was worth a max of $26 million. Good money, but not the type of contract that would hamstring a team. If Watt would be willing to sign a similar type deal, I could see the Packers showing interest.
  22. This isn't the first time I've seen this comparison, and I urge you to tread lightly on it. Reggie White was at the absolute apex of his career when he signed with the Packers. He was an extremely durable superstar that every team in the NFL was salivating over. Him choosing to sign with the Packers put the Packers on the map as a contender. It was arguably the biggest personnel move in the team's history. Do I think that JJ Watt could still be an effective player? Yes. But he's now a shell of his former NFL Defensive POY self. I worry that if the Packers do end up signing him, fans are going to be expecting the dominant 2014 version of JJ, and he simply isn't even in the same area code as that player any longer. Is he currently a better player right now than Lowry? Yes. But I worry that it isn't demonstrably.
  23. Williams is an interesting one... 2nd most efficient slot WR in 2019 and known as a WR who will block too. Who knows, but he would seem to fit exactly what the Packers like. 6'4", 205 .... its like he came off the "prototypical Gute receiver" assembly line. He is obviously bigger than most slot guys, and he isn't really the "quick twitch" type of player that many have been hoping for in that role, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see the Packers show some interest. He's also going to be substantially cheaper than the WRs at the top of the FA market.
  24. Sort of an odd take. They signed the Smith Bros two offseasons ago, were in on trading for Mack and signing Allen Robinson. This isn't Ted Thompson anymore. Agreed. The Packers are players in the upper end of the free agent market every year. They were hamstrung by the cap (and likely COVID) last year, but still managed to bring in some key pieces.
  25. According to the ground rules, Rasmussen is no longer eligible. I had to look twice, because I thought I may have forgotten a guy that would have been in my top 3
