  1. Hopefully Trent Grisham can lead them to a sweep this weekend!
  2. I certainly had hope that they'd go on a run, but I agree that nothing this team has done this year indicated that they were capable of doing this. You hope that a few hitters get hot and carry you, but that hasn't even really happened so much. Instead it's been a true team effort, with what seems like two or three different guys taking the starring role every night, especially in this stretch since Yelich got hurt. This team is full of a bunch of also-rans with a few older stars, young'uns and secondary guys in their primes sprinkled in. And I know that it would be a mistake to overlook them in the playoffs.
  3. Jordan Lyles is kinda good. It took awhile, but we found our 2019 version of Wade Miley.
  4. We know the kid can hit. i hope beyond hope that he devotes a lot of time this offseason to his fielding.
  5. If that scenario happens wouldn't the Cubs be one game back of MIL/STL? Yes ... the Brewers and Cards would have a one game cushion on the Cubs in that scenario.
  6. I don't think it made the path "a lot" rougher. It's already rough. I figured they'd have to come close to winning out before, and that's still the case. The margin for error just got a little tighter. I guess it depends on your definition of "a lot". Maybe I was reading between the lines incorrectly, but I assumed reading your posts that you believe that the Nationals beating the Cardinals with Scherzer on the hill was kind of a foregone conclusion. I guess I just saw it a different way. The Cards are good at home, so that result didn't surprise me. Just like seeing them drop 3 of 4 this weekend to the Cubs wouldn't surprise me.
  7. Yes, they all are very important. But with each win, you just increase your margin of error. I think it's gonna probably take going 8-2 to have a shot at the division. Win today, and it's 7-2 ... and so on.
  8. I’m puzzled. When I said yesterday that the Brewers’ path to the division title had gotten a lot rougher with the Brewers loss and the Cardinals win, you seemed to disagree with me. But now you’re basically saying exactly what I was saying. Not really ... I am saying this afternoon's game is nearing "must-win" territory, while having confidence that they will, in fact, win it. Call it hope or "pie in the sky" dreams or whatever, but I am banking on this team playing well in these last 10 games, putting 8 in the win column, and winning or being tied for the division lead with 90 wins. But yeah, for that to happen, this afternoon's game is pretty important. Yeah, I just looked, and what I said above is pretty much spot on what I said last night, so I'm not getting where you are puzzled.
  9. I disagree. You want the Phillies still having something to play for when they face the Nationals in 5 games next week.
  10. How is it super unlikely for Cubs to win 7, Brewers 7, Nats 6 (of 11), and Cards 5? That's hardly egregious. They're all winning teams fighting for a playoff spot with everything to play for. It's not like 3 teams have to go 9-1. And if that happens, we have a 3 way tie and Brewers are still within one game of the division with no guarantee of postseason. I would feel a whole lot better if Cards take care of business in their 7 against the Cubs to knock one of the four out and give the Brewers more wiggle room. The bottom line is the more the Cubs lose, the more padding the Brewers have because Cards are already + 3 on us. I totally get the people who are all in for the division. But it's gonna be really tough to win 8 or 9 of 10 to have a reasonable shot at the division. Postseason Brewers baseball isn't exactly something we're used to so I just want in. I get that. I think we need to take it one game at a time. We'll likely know the result of the Brewers/Padres game before the first pitch of Cards/Cubs. If the Brewers win, I'm a Cub fan tonight. If the Brewers lose, I'm all in on the Cardinals. If the Brewers and Cardinals both win tonight, it's kind of a push.
  11. I find it crazy that no one seems to care about this yet using steroids makes you the biggest criminal of all-time. This player had the muscles in his arm artificially improved with a surgery in a provable way with his velocity, yet no problem. How is this not considered cheating? Artificially gain some unquantifiable advantage from whatever Braun took, suspended. As someone who is not up in arms about PEDs I've made that same point over the years several times. It's all about the integrity of the records and how folks 70 years ago didn't have this etc, you can't take some extra testosterone or you're the devil. But you can take a ligament from another human and insert it in your body. Another one is laser eye surgery or even just contacts in general. Note, this isn't argument that these things shouldn't be allowed, as I fully agree they should. It's an argument that the obsession and holier than thou attitudes about PEDs are a bit overboard, imo. To play devil's advocate a bit, yeah, medical technology has come a drastically long way in 100 years, but can medical-induced improvements really be considered a competitive advantage when they are available to everyone? No one is cheating the system or breaking the rules. I imagine that since these types of performance enhancement opportunities are available to all, they cancel each other out for the most part. Like a hitter that gets lasik and can see the ball better now is somewhat neutralized by the pitcher who gained 2 mph on his FB after TJ recovery.
  12. My dream of the Cubs and Cardinals both missing the playoffs is nearly dead. At this point, it would take the Mets winning out to sneak into that 2nd spot behind the Nationals. The Cubs would have to take 5 of 7 from the Cardinals, but drop two to the Pirates. The Cardinals would have to lose two to the DBacks, so basically an epic 3-7 collapse from them. Hopefully the DBacks have a good weekend so those games against the Cards still matter to them next week. It is probably much more likely that all three Central Division teams make the playoffs than only one.
  13. Okay, I didn't know if there was a reason he was only taking back kickoffs. I know some players can quickly get shunned from punts if they don't protect the ball with their life as a muffed punt is a disaster. He only averaged about 5 yards in his limited punting returning in college. I suppose Grandpa Williams could do the punt returning. They trusted him quite a bit last year with it. The only reason Smith wasn't returning punts with Kansas City last year is that Tyreek Hill is kind of the God of Punt Returns. I believe Smith returned punts for them the last two preseasons, and did it regularly in college.
  14. I disagree. The Brewers could be within a game of the division and not make the playoffs. If Brewers go 7-3 we finish with 89 wins. If Cubs go 7-3 they finish with 89 wins. (4 of 7 from Cards and 3 of 3 vs Pirates). If Cards go 5-5 they finish with 90 wins (3 of 7 from Cubs and 2 of 3 vs DBacks). If Nats go 7-4 they finish with 90 wins or 6-5 they have 89 wins. So that scenario would put the Brewers within one game of the division but not even guarantee them a wildcard spot. If Cards annihilate the Cubs, the Cubs fade and we're not the odd team out missing the playoffs. Well then, the push for 90 wins starts this afternoon. That would be tough, but with the stretch this team peeled off over the last couple weeks, it is possible.
  15. With how good Gamel has been versus lefties this year, I'd be very surprised if he wasn't in there today. Might be a good idea to give Grisham a breather as well. A deep darkhorse for a surprise start today if Pina is still feeling off might be Freitas at catcher. I know Freitas has shown next to nothing in his limited opportunities so far, but the guy destroyed lefties at AAA this year. Probably won't happened, but there is some sense to it.
  16. I think I'm pulling for a Cubs win tonight, but if they look listless and drop the opener, I want the Cards to blow them out of the water. I don't think that's going to happen, though. Yeah, the Cubs are missing a couple stars, but Caratini and Hoerner are no slouches filling in, and that lineup has the talent to go off at any time.
  17. I don't think it's improbable at all for the Cubs to take 3 of 4 in Wrigley this weekend. In fact, the Brewers probably need that to happen to even think about a division title. If the Brewers do as this should today and this weekend, there's still a solid shot. If the Brewers win today and sweep the Pirates this weekend (I know, can't bank on sweeps), the Cubs taking 3 of 4 would put the Brewers in a tie with the Cards for the division lead, with a 1-game cushion on the Cubs. Of course, if the Cardinals walk into Wrigley and whip up on the Cubs this weekend, it greatly improves the Brewers' Wild Card hopes.
  18. I agree. Amir Garrett is a lot of fun. Would love to have a guy like this in this pen.
  19. From what I heard it was 100% a judgment call. Right or wrong there was no reversing it once it was made. Im not sure how you can judge that grisham impeded the catcher in anyway when the ball deflected off him. I think they must have ruled it that since it deflected, he was automatically out, which is absolutely not correct. I think the likely ruling is that by kicking the ball, Grisham impeded the catcher from fielding it cleanly, which then caused him to hurry the throw to 1st. It sucks for the Brewers, and the umps are kind of forcing a square peg into a round hole on the enforcement, but in the end I think they ruled it correctly.
  20. Well, if the Brewers want to keep their hopes of a division title alive (yes, they are still alive), this one is approaching "must win" territory. Making up three games in a ten game period will be difficult, but it isn't unheard of, especially since the Cardinals have what's going to be a very tough 4-game set at Wrigley this weekend, followed by a 3-game set with the DBacks, who are technically still alive, but not by much, then a final 3 gamer against the Cubs at home. In the end, the Brewers have to take care of business, and let the rest fall as it will.
  21. Nice! Makes me feel better about tonight's game. Yeah, the Brewers lost ground to the Cards, but not the Cubs. Cubs have to feel like their backs are against the wall going into their 4-gamer against the Cards this weekend.
  22. Reds beat the Cubs 3-2! That makes me feel a lot better about the Brewers dropping one tonight.
  23. Reds up on the Cubs 3-2 in extras. Maddon is on his 9th pitcher of the evening.
  24. They weren't going to win out. You know that. It’s not just the Brewers losing tonight, it’s the Cards beating Scherzer and the Nats. I was hoping on Monday that the Brewers could gain at least one game on the Cards playing 3 at home against the Padres while the Cardinals were playing the Nats and their top 3 pitchers. Just marking time for 3 days with so little time left is a loss. That would have been ideal, but this certainly wasn't any sort of back-breaker. Cards are a tough team, especially at home. Whatever happens between the Cubs and Cards this weekend helps the Brewers in the end. The Brewers need to handle their business at home tomorrow and this weekend. If that happens, they will be sitting well going into the last 6 games. The Cards and Cubs will decide whether the Brewers will still be in the division race or aiming for the Wild Card come Tuesday.
